Its farewell message cited the war in Ukraine alongside COVID-related deaths and illness, rising European data-center power costs, inflation and revenue that no longer covered operating expenses. The original team later said there were no official mirrors or rebuilds; the closure’s stated causes have not been independently verified.
What RARBG was and when it closed
Founded in 2008, RARBG became a prominent torrent index and BitTorrent tracker, particularly associated with movie and television releases. It was known as a source of release information and metadata used by people and other services across the torrent ecosystem. Unlike indexes that accept general public uploads, background reporting described RARBG as not allowing ordinary users to upload torrents. TorrentFreak’s RARBG coverage provides context on the site and its history.
On May 31, 2023, visitors found a farewell notice instead of the usual catalog and releases. The closure was presented as the team’s decision to stop operating, not as a gradual wind-down or a public seizure notice. TorrentFreak reported the shutdown and the message that day in its account of RARBG’s closure.
What reasons did RARBG give?
The farewell message said the preceding two years had been difficult and that the team had unanimously decided to close. It described several pressures, rather than naming a single cause:

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- COVID-related deaths and illness: The message said some people associated with the team had died from COVID complications and others continued to suffer serious health effects.
- The war in Europe: It said some team members were fighting in the war “on both sides.” The message did not identify them or establish their precise roles, and it should not be read as saying the entire team was involved in combat.
- Data-center electricity costs: The team cited sharply higher power costs at European data centers.
- Inflation and inadequate revenue: It said operating expenses had risen beyond what the operation’s revenue could sustain.
These personal, operational and financial details were claims in the team’s farewell message, reported by TorrentFreak; the available reporting does not independently document the deaths, military involvement, finances or precise cost pressures. The war in Ukraine was one stated factor, but the message also named COVID, energy costs, inflation and insufficient revenue. It does not establish that the war was the decisive reason.
Was the shutdown caused by law enforcement?
RARBG’s closure occurred around the time of a Bulgarian anti-piracy crackdown, prompting questions about whether the two were connected. TorrentFreak reported on the timing in its coverage of the crackdown. The farewell message did not cite legal action, and the available reporting does not establish that a raid, court order, domain seizure or prosecution caused the shutdown. The timing is context, not proof of a causal link.

Why RARBG’s disappearance mattered to other services
RARBG’s role extended beyond a website where users searched for releases. It was a prominent release and metadata source, and other services and automated tools relied on its catalog or release information. After it closed, TorrentFreak reported missing fresh content, errors in automated download applications and disruption at streaming-oriented piracy services in its account of the shutdown’s broader effects.
That disruption did not mean piracy ended or that all torrent activity collapsed. It meant an important source had disappeared from a wider ecosystem that continued to use other services.

Did RARBG leave an archive, or come back?
Large numbers of RARBG movie and television magnet links appeared online after the closure, and people attempted to preserve or redistribute metadata. Preserved links or catalogs are not the same as an operating RARBG service. As of August 18, 2026, the available reporting provides no verified evidence that the original operation restarted.
More importantly, TorrentFreak reported that the former team said there were no official RARBG proxies, mirrors or rebuilds. Its report on post-shutdown copycats documented the confusion. A site can copy RARBG’s name, logo, layout or catalog without any connection to the original team. A domain associated with the service in the past can also change hands or be redirected; branding alone does not authenticate a successor.

How to assess a site claiming to be RARBG
Because the former team disclaimed official mirrors and rebuilds, treat any site claiming to be the service’s official return as unaffiliated unless there is verifiable first-party confirmation. HTTPS alone shows an encrypted connection, not that a site is genuine or safe.
- Do not enter passwords, payment details or other personal information on a supposed successor.
- Do not install software, browser extensions or a purported torrent application offered by a mirror.
- Be wary of aggressive pop-ups, fake download buttons, casino redirects, fake security warnings and requests for cryptocurrency.
- Keep your browser and operating system updated, and use reputable security software. These measures reduce some risks; they do not make an untrusted site safe.
- Remember that a copied catalog, preserved magnet link or familiar design is not evidence of affiliation.
Where to look for films and shows legally
If the practical question is where a title can be watched, availability varies by country, licensing window and date. Search title by title rather than assuming one service has a particular film or series.

Copyright and BitTorrent: the distinction
BitTorrent is a distribution technology; using it is not inherently unlawful. Downloading or sharing copyrighted material without permission may violate copyright law, with rules and enforcement varying by jurisdiction and by whether the activity involves downloading, uploading or sharing. A VPN does not legalize infringement, authenticate a mirror or eliminate malware risk.
