Pocket Casts Open-Sourced Its iOS and Android Apps: What That Means

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pocket Casts open-sourced its iOS and Android mobile apps on October 19, 2022. The code is available under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL-2.0), so developers can inspect, modify, build, and contribute to the clients under the license’s terms. That does not establish that Pocket Casts released its backend, sync service, other apps, or the infrastructure behind its paid features.

What Pocket Casts announced

In its October 19, 2022 announcement, Pocket Casts said its mobile apps were open source. The move followed the company joining Automattic in 2021. Pocket Casts described the decision as a way to support a more diverse podcast-client ecosystem and invited people to report bugs, suggest features, and submit pull requests. It also said its own team would continue developing the apps and expanding Pocket Casts Plus.

Which code is open source?

The public repositories are the Android app and the iOS app. Both identify the Mozilla Public License 2.0, or MPL-2.0, in their license materials: Android license and iOS license.

MPL-2.0 is a file-level, weak-copyleft license. In practical terms, people can study and modify covered code, and can redistribute it subject to the license’s requirements. It is not a blanket grant to use every asset or service associated with Pocket Casts. A fork is not automatically an official Pocket Casts release, and the code license does not by itself grant trademark rights, production signing credentials, or rights to third-party software and services. Review the current license and notices before redistributing a modified build; commercial redistribution may warrant legal advice.

What the announcement does not establish

“The mobile apps are open source” is narrower than “the whole Pocket Casts service is open source.” The announcement and public repositories establish that the Android and iOS client code is available. They do not establish that Pocket Casts released its server-side infrastructure, account and synchronization services, web player, desktop apps, or every dependency. The repositories refer to services, APIs, configuration, and external components, so a client build should not be mistaken for a complete independently operated podcast platform.

Pocket Casts describes a wider set of apps in its supported apps documentation. That product breadth makes the mobile-only scope important: do not assume the other clients or hosted systems are covered by the two mobile repositories.

How to build the Android app

The Android repository documents both an Android Studio route and command-line tasks. Check its current README and contribution guidance first, because project instructions and branches can change.

  1. Install Android Studio, clone the Android repository, and open the project in Android Studio.
  2. In Android Studio, use Tools → Device Manager to create an emulator.
  3. Use Run → Edit Configurations… to create an Android App configuration and select the pocketcasts-android.app.main module.
  4. Run the project. For command-line builds and tests, the repository lists these Gradle tasks:
./gradlew :app:assembleDebugProd
./gradlew :app:installDebugProd
./gradlew :app:testDebugUnitTest
./gradlew :app:connectedDebugAndroidTest

A debug build is not the same as a signed Google Play release. The repository distinguishes ordinary builds from production signing, which requires private keystore details unavailable to ordinary external contributors.

How to build the iOS app

The iOS repository provides an external-contributor setup. Its documented initial commands are:

gem install bundler
make install_dependencies
make external_contributor

Then open the project’s .xcodeproj in Xcode, select the Pocket Casts project and a simulator device, and run it. This is a local development path, not a promise that every feature works from a clean checkout. iOS development requires Apple’s development tools; distributing an app to physical devices or through the App Store involves signing, provisioning, and Apple’s distribution procedures. A simulator build is not equivalent to the signed App Store binary.

What contributors and users can realistically do

The public code creates a practical route for inspection, experimentation, bug reports, feature proposals, and pull requests. The repositories also provide project-specific contribution and security materials. Start with those instructions, use the listed reporting channels for vulnerabilities rather than publishing sensitive exploit details, and follow the project’s testing and review expectations.

  • Submitting a change: A pull request is a proposal, not a commitment to merge it or add the feature to the product roadmap.
  • Maintaining a fork: A fork can be developed independently, but its maintainer takes on updates, compatibility, testing, and security work.
  • Running a modified app: Compilation alone does not ensure that authentication, sync, discovery, purchases, notifications, or other network-backed features will work as expected.
  • Distributing a fork: Licensing the source does not provide Pocket Casts branding or official app-store identity. A distributor may need distinct branding and identifiers, valid signing, and an appropriate privacy and service setup.

Public source code improves the opportunity for review; it does not, on its own, prove that an app is secure or that a fork can use every production feature.

Open-source code and Pocket Casts Plus are separate

Making the client code available does not make hosted services cost-free or remove the distinction between Pocket Casts’ free tier and its paid Plus offering. Pocket Casts said it would keep developing Plus when it announced the open-source apps. The company’s plans page describes its current offering; availability and prices can vary by region and billing channel. A historical pricing article lists a $39.99 annual price for new subscribers from April 8, 2023, and a $14.99 legacy annual rate for some existing subscribers; Pocket Casts last updated that page on May 10, 2024. Those dated figures should not be treated as a universal current price. A self-built client also does not supply a separate backend or automatically grant access to Plus services.

How Pocket Casts compares with open-source alternatives

Option Platforms and code Best fit Trade-off
Pocket Casts Open-source Android and iOS clients under MPL-2.0; hosted Pocket Casts service People who want the official cross-device product and its services The public clients do not establish an independently runnable service, and the official product remains under company control.
AntennaPod Open-source, GPL-licensed Android app; available through Google Play and F-Droid Android users prioritizing open source and an ad-free app It is not an iOS or cross-platform replacement. AntennaPod says it is volunteer-built, ad-free at the app level, and supported by donations; see its license, advertising policy, and platform information.
Overcast Proprietary Apple-platform app Apple users interested in features such as Smart Speed and Voice Boost It is not open source or a forkable alternative. Its official page describes a free, ad-supported option and an annual subscription, without establishing a reliable current price here.

Choose the official Pocket Casts app if you value its supported service and want store-delivered updates without maintaining a build. Choose an alternative based on the platform and whether source access or cross-device convenience matters more to you.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
