WSUS can display a Windows 11 computer as “Windows 10 Pro” or a similar Windows 10 name without the client actually running Windows 10. In the usual case, that is a reporting-label issue, not evidence that WSUS is installing the wrong updates. Confirm the client’s edition, display version, and build locally, then check update products, approvals, and applicability if there is a real update problem.
What the Windows 10 label in WSUS means
The WSUS computer view can show several kinds of information that are easy to conflate: a client-reported operating-system description, version-related data, and the status of individual updates. A Windows 10-looking description is not, by itself, proof that the operating system is Windows 10 or that Windows 10 updates are being installed.

Microsoft Q&A guidance attributes the Windows 11 display to the product name reported by the client, which may still be a Windows 10 name. The guidance describes this as compatibility-related behavior; it is community support guidance, not a standalone Microsoft WSUS product bulletin. Microsoft Q&A: WSUS displays Windows 11 clients as Windows 10
Do not assume the WSUS Version column is the Windows release number either. A Microsoft Q&A response notes that this field may represent the Windows Update Agent version rather than the operating-system version. Microsoft Q&A: WSUS version display

Why Windows 11 can retain Windows 10-looking identifiers
Windows 11 continues the Windows NT 10.0 platform lineage, and some identification values remain compatible with Windows 10. In particular, the ProductName value under HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion may still contain a Windows 10 name. Software that relies on such a value can therefore report “Windows 10” even when the device is Windows 11.
A related Microsoft Q&A discussion covers retained values including ProductName, CurrentMajorVersionNumber, and CurrentVersion, and points to supported APIs and build information rather than depending on those registry values for identification. Microsoft Q&A: Windows 11 product name in the registry
Does the label mean WSUS will deploy the wrong updates?
Not necessarily. The computer’s friendly name and an update’s applicability are separate things. WSUS update metadata includes product and classification information; applicability is not determined solely by the text shown beside a computer. Microsoft Q&A guidance says Windows 11 clients displayed as Windows 10 can still receive updates associated with the Windows 11 product. Treat that as a reason not to diagnose a failure from the label alone—not as a guarantee that every WSUS configuration is correct.
When verifying a particular update, inspect its product, classification, KB, approval, and applicability rather than inferring targeting from the computer description. Microsoft documents the product and classification metadata exposed through WSUS and the Microsoft Update Catalog in its WSUS and Catalog guidance. The WSUS Computers node provides client properties and update-status information; see Managing WSUS client computers and computer groups.

Select-Object Caption, Version, BuildNumber
Use the local edition, display version, and build to establish what Windows release the client reports. These checks are more useful for that purpose than the WSUS friendly-name field.
Inspect registry values only as diagnostic evidence
To see why an application or inventory view might show a Windows 10 name, query the values without changing them:
reg query "HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion" /v ProductName
reg query "HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion" /v CurrentBuild
reg query "HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion" /v DisplayVersion
ProductName may still say Windows 10. Build and display-version data are more useful for distinguishing releases, but interpret build numbers against a maintained release mapping rather than treating one number as a permanent Windows 11 identifier.
Identify Windows 11 computers in a WSUS-managed fleet
Use build data carefully
Where the WSUS computer view or an export provides useful build information, use it as a clue and validate the mapping for the releases in your fleet. Microsoft Q&A cites build 22000 as an example for Windows 11 21H2. It is not a universal identifier for all Windows 11 releases; later releases use other build families. Avoid a permanent rule that equates only build 22000 with Windows 11.
Collect inventory from the endpoint-management system
For dependable reporting, collect fields such as WindowsProductName, WindowsDisplayVersion, and OsBuildNumber through Configuration Manager hardware inventory, PowerShell remoting, Group Policy startup scripts, Intune device inventory, or an existing monitoring platform. WSUS computer reporting is useful for update management, but its friendly-name field is not a substitute for operating-system inventory.

Check update metadata separately
For a missing or questionable update, inspect its product and classification metadata, then check the KB and applicability for the target device. Windows 11 appears as a supported Windows client product in Microsoft protocol documentation: Windows Update Services Protocol product information. Microsoft’s client-image page also lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 separately, illustrating that release catalogs distinguish them even when some client identification values are compatible with Windows 10: Windows client images for June 2026.

| What you observe | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Local checks confirm Windows 11; only the WSUS name says Windows 10 | Consistent with the known reporting behavior | No repair is needed if synchronization, approvals, and installations are otherwise working. |
| Windows 11 updates do not appear in WSUS | Possible product-selection, classification, or synchronization issue | Check selected products and classifications, last successful synchronization, synchronization errors, and whether the expected update is present. |
| An update is present but not offered to a client | Approval, group targeting, or applicability may be involved | Check the computer’s WSUS group, approval for that group, and update applicability; visibility in WSUS alone does not prove applicability. |
| An applicable update repeatedly fails to install | A client, policy, servicing, or server-side issue may exist | Review Windows Update events and client errors, then compare client status with WSUS approval and reported status. |
| WSUS build/version data conflicts with local inventory | Inventory freshness or field interpretation may be the cause | Compare with current endpoint-side data and determine what the particular WSUS column represents. |
Troubleshoot when updates are missing or failing
Keep the update-delivery investigation separate from the displayed operating-system name. Follow these checks in order so that a cosmetic label does not lead to unnecessary changes to WSUS.
- Confirm client identity and build. Run
Get-ComputerInfo | Select-Object WindowsProductName, WindowsDisplayVersion, OsBuildNumberlocally or through your inventory tool. - Check WSUS products and classifications. Confirm that the Windows 11 products and the classifications your organization requires are selected for synchronization. Do not infer Windows 11 coverage merely because a Windows 10 product is selected.
- Check synchronization. Review the last successful synchronization and its errors, and verify that the specific expected update exists in WSUS.
- Check approval and targeting. Confirm the computer’s WSUS group and that the update is approved for that group. Determine whether it is applicable to the client, not just visible in the console.
- Check client policy. Verify the configured intranet Microsoft Update service location and look for conflicting Group Policy, MDM, or Configuration Manager policies. Check whether a feature-update policy intentionally pins the device to a release.
- Review client logs. Examine Windows Update event logs and, when needed, generate the merged log with
Get-WindowsUpdateLog. Treat client update errors as a separate symptom from the displayed name. - Compare server and client status. Use the WSUS client properties and update status alongside the client’s own installation state; do not infer failure solely from “Windows 10” in the computer list.
Do not edit ProductName to make the console look right
Changing HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProductName is not a recommended WSUS repair. It may change what one tool displays, but it can also leave identification data inconsistent with Microsoft-managed values and does not fix missing products, approvals, applicability, or synchronization. Microsoft Q&A guidance for this behavior recommends using supported identification methods instead of modifying compatibility-related registry values.
Keep Windows 10 servicing status separate from this display issue
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s June 2026 Windows client-image information. That support-policy date matters when planning servicing, but it does not explain or resolve why a Windows 11 client may display a Windows 10 product name in WSUS. Consult the Microsoft client-image page for that dated information.
