Use Configuration Manager hardware inventory to find the time-zone data last reported by Windows clients. The query reads inventory already processed by the site—not live endpoint settings—so first verify that the applicable client settings collect the time-zone class, then refresh policy and hardware inventory.

What the time-zone inventory tells you

Windows exposes time-zone information through the Win32_TimeZone WMI class in RootCIMV2. ConfigMgr represents inventoried WMI classes on the server with SMS_G_System_ class names; the corresponding inventory class is generally SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE. See Microsoft’s documentation for Win32_TimeZone and server-side hardware inventory classes.

“Time zone” can mean a configured zone definition, its display or standard-time name, daylight-time name, base UTC bias, daylight adjustment, or the current effective offset. A bias or offset alone does not uniquely identify a time zone: different zones can share an offset, and daylight-saving rules can change the effective offset. ConfigMgr’s TimeZoneOffset field, where available, is an offset rather than a complete time-zone identity.

Check the applicable client settings first

Hardware inventory must be enabled, and the time-zone class and properties must be selected in the client settings that actually apply to the devices. Do not assume that changing Default Client Settings is enough: a custom device client setting with higher precedence can govern a device instead.

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, go to Administration > Client Settings.
  2. Open Default Client Settings or the applicable custom device client setting.
  3. Select Hardware Inventory, then Set Classes.
  4. Search for Time Zone, TIME_ZONE, or Win32_TimeZone. The displayed label can vary by console version and language.
  5. Enable the class and select only the properties needed for the report. Apply the setting, then confirm that it is assigned to the target devices.

The class may already be in the site’s inventory class list, but its presence does not mean it is enabled for the devices. Microsoft documents how to configure and extend hardware inventory, including adding or importing classes. If the class is not listed, use Add Hardware Inventory Class to connect to a representative client’s RootCIMV2 namespace and look for Win32_TimeZone. Confirm the class exists and is accessible before making schema changes. Current-branch ConfigMgr supports console-based class management for many existing WMI classes; do not begin by editing legacy MOF files. A genuine custom extension should follow Microsoft’s supported procedures, including its guidance on Configuration.mof.

Collecting extra classes and properties increases inventory payload and can affect network and site processing. Keep the selection focused on the reporting need.

Refresh policy and collect inventory

After changing the client setting, the client must receive the updated policy, run hardware inventory, and send its report. The site then needs to process that report before the query reflects it.

  1. On a test device, trigger Machine Policy Retrieval if you need to obtain the updated client settings promptly.
  2. Trigger a Hardware Inventory Cycle to collect the selected data.
  3. Allow time for the client to send the report and for the site to process it. A scan does not make the result immediately available in the console.
  4. Check the device in Resource Explorer to confirm whether the time-zone inventory arrived.

Machine Policy Retrieval obtains settings; Hardware Inventory Cycle collects and reports data. They are separate actions. Console notification labels and options can vary by current-branch release.

Create a query for time-zone inventory

In the console, create a query and use this discovery query:

select
    SMS_R_System.Name,
    SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.*
from
    SMS_R_System
inner join
    SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE
    on SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId

The join connects a device record to its time-zone inventory record. Because it is an inner join, devices without a corresponding record are omitted; an empty result does not by itself prove that no devices have the setting.

Once you have confirmed which properties are enabled and populated in your site, an explicit-column query is easier to maintain:

select
    SMS_R_System.Name,
    SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.Caption,
    SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.Description,
    SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.Bias,
    SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.StandardName,
    SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.DaylightName
from
    SMS_R_System
inner join
    SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE
    on SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId

Use the explicit version only after verifying those property names in the site’s query editor and confirming they are selected for inventory. For discovery, .* avoids assuming a property is available. The join pattern is also shown in this published SCCM time-zone query example.

Filter for a specific time-zone value

After identifying a populated property and its exact stored value, add a filter using that verified field. For example, replace both placeholders with the property and value confirmed in your site:

where SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.<VerifiedProperty> = "<VerifiedValue>"

Do not filter on an offset when the task is to identify a named zone: several zones can have the same offset, and the effective offset may change seasonally. A ConfigMgr query identifies matching inventory records; it does not change the endpoint setting.

Include inventory freshness in a diagnostic query

To distinguish a current-looking value from an old report, you can join workstation status and include its last hardware scan time:

select
    SMS_R_System.Name,
    SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.*,
    SMS_G_System_WORKSTATION_STATUS.LastHardwareScan
from
    SMS_R_System
inner join
    SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE
    on SMS_G_System_TIME_ZONE.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId
left join
    SMS_G_System_WORKSTATION_STATUS
    on SMS_G_System_WORKSTATION_STATUS.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId

Treat this as a diagnostic example, not guaranteed drop-in code: verify the class and property names in the site’s query editor and ensure the needed status data is available. Microsoft documents LastHardwareScan in SMS_G_System_WORKSTATION_STATUS.

Validate a result on a known device

Compare a test computer’s ConfigMgr result with the local Windows setting. Run these commands on that endpoint:

Get-CimInstance -Namespace Root/CIMV2 -ClassName Win32_TimeZone
Get-TimeZone

Win32_TimeZone exposes WMI time-zone properties; Get-TimeZone provides a PowerShell representation. They need not present the setting in identical forms. Microsoft also documents Win32_SystemTimeZone, which associates a computer system with its time-zone setting and references Win32_TimeZone.

Troubleshoot missing or stale results

The query returns no rows

  • Check which client settings apply to the device, whether Hardware Inventory is enabled, and whether the time-zone class and required properties are selected.
  • Retrieve Machine Policy, then run a Hardware Inventory Cycle and allow for report delivery and site processing.
  • Confirm the class and properties in Resource Explorer and verify the class name in the site’s query editor.
  • On the endpoint, test the WMI source with Get-CimInstance -Namespace Root/CIMV2 -ClassName Win32_TimeZone.
  • Review InventoryAgent.log for client-side inventory issues.

The query returns an old value

The query shows the last stored inventory value, not necessarily the device’s current setting. Check LastHardwareScan where available, device activity and client health, the effective client setting, and whether inventory reports are reaching the site.

The offset looks right but the time zone looks wrong

An offset is not a unique zone identifier. Daylight-saving rules can change the effective offset, and a device may have changed zones after its last scan. Also distinguish the Windows system setting from time-zone interpretations used by an application, browser, or user profile.

When inventory is the right approach

Hardware inventory is useful for centralized reporting, collection-building, and reviewing stored device data without interactively querying every endpoint. Its trade-off is freshness: the value depends on client policy, a completed scan, successful reporting, and site processing. For an immediate current reading or a corrective action, consider a live endpoint query or a separate compliance and remediation workflow; those approaches have different connectivity, permission, scale, and reporting requirements. For context on choosing between inventory and compliance settings, see Microsoft’s discussion of inventory versus compliance settings.
