The best Twitter alternative depends on what you want to replace. Threads is the strongest choice for potential reach, Bluesky feels most like classic Twitter while offering more feed control, and Mastodon is best for decentralized, server-level governance. Reddit, Discord, Substack Notes and Nostr solve narrower needs rather than reproducing Twitter’s entire public-feed model.
For many people, the practical answer is to use two services: one for discovery and conversation, another for a newsletter, website or community that you control.
Quick recommendations
| Goal | Best fit | Why | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Largest potential audience | Threads | Meta reported 500 million monthly active users on June 16, 2026. | Centralized ownership and algorithmic distribution |
| Closest Twitter-like experience | Bluesky | Short public posts, replies, reposts, custom feeds and moderation controls | Smaller verified audience than Threads |
| Decentralization and community governance | Mastodon | Independent servers, cross-server interaction and documented profile migration | More complicated onboarding and uneven support |
| Topic-based discussion | Large specialist communities and persistent threads | Not a personal public-broadcasting network | |
| Private or semi-private groups | Discord | Text, voice, roles and detailed permissions | Limited public discovery |
| Writers and newsletter publishers | Substack Notes | Social discovery connected to publishing and subscriptions | More creator- and newsletter-focused |
| Protocol-level decentralization | Nostr | Multiple clients and relay-based architecture | Small, fragmented and technical |
What counts as a Twitter alternative?
A real alternative replaces at least some of Twitter’s core functions: short public posts, following individuals, replies, reposts, hashtags, real-time commentary, public identity and open audience discovery. A service can still be useful without matching all of them. Reddit is better for subject communities, Discord for coordinated groups and LinkedIn for professional networking, but none reproduces Twitter’s combination of personal feed and public conversation.
Decide what you are moving before choosing a service. Full migration means abandoning or deleting X. Partial migration keeps X for contacts who have not moved. Audience hedging means publishing on several networks. Identity migration reserves your name, domain and professional profile elsewhere. Content migration republishes posts or imports archives, while community migration moves a group into a different moderation and discovery system.

Threads: best for scale and mainstream discovery
Meta announced that Threads reached 500 million monthly active users on June 16, 2026. That is a company-reported figure, not an independently standardized comparison with other networks. It nevertheless makes Threads the clearest scale leader among the alternatives covered here. Source: Meta’s June 2026 announcement.
Why choose Threads
- Low-friction signup for people already using Meta services
- Large potential pool for mainstream discovery
- Growing topic communities and recommendation controls
- Optional ActivityPub-based fediverse sharing
Meta’s June 2026 update described communities, custom icons, community champions and a “Your Algo” feed control rolling out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Availability can vary by country and account.
Where Threads falls short
- Meta controls the service, ranking systems and core policy decisions.
- A large user total does not prove that your niche, customers or colleagues are active there.
- Algorithmic distribution can make reach unpredictable.
- Threads does not automatically recreate X’s real-time news culture, search behavior or reply norms.
Threads supports optional fediverse sharing through ActivityPub. Meta says public profiles in more than 100 countries can enable it, subject to settings and service limitations. This is interoperability, not full decentralization or guaranteed social-graph portability. Details are described at Meta’s fediverse explainer.
Bluesky: the closest Twitter-like experience
Bluesky is the strongest fit for readers who want familiar short-form public conversation without relying entirely on one global ranking feed. Its official overview highlights custom feeds, moderation lists, content filters, public APIs and custom algorithms: Bluesky’s platform overview.

Why choose Bluesky
- Familiar posting, reply, repost and profile model
- Choice among custom feeds instead of one mandatory timeline
- Moderation lists and content filters that let users shape their experience
- Public developer tooling and an open technical foundation
Important qualifications
Bluesky’s AT Protocol is not the same architecture as Mastodon’s ActivityPub-based server federation. Bluesky can provide a mainstream, centrally operated app while supporting a broader protocol ecosystem. “Open” does not mean private, unindexed or automatically portable.
Bluesky has a smaller verified audience figure than Threads in the evidence available for this comparison. Do not treat custom feeds as automatic audience growth: new users still need to find relevant accounts, lists and communities. A creator should test whether the intended audience actually posts there.
Mastodon: best for decentralization and server governance
Mastodon is a network of independently operated servers rather than one centralized website. You select a provider, and that server’s rules, culture, moderation and signup process matter. Accounts can interact across servers, and Mastodon says users can move a profile to another server without losing followers. See Mastodon’s server guide.
Advantages
- Independent server governance instead of one company setting every rule
- Cross-server follows and conversations
- Explicit community-level moderation
- Documented profile migration between providers without losing followers
Costs of the model
- There is no single universal moderation policy or support desk.
- Search, discovery and local timelines vary by server.
- Account recovery and reliability depend partly on the provider you choose.
- Decentralization reduces dependence on one company but creates dependence on a server operator.
Choose a Mastodon server deliberately
- Read the server’s rules, moderation policy and language or regional focus.
- Check whether registration is open, approval-based or invite-only.
- Look for a clear administrator identity and contact method.
- Review local culture and active communities, not just the domain name.
- Save recovery information and learn the provider’s migration procedure.
Other useful alternatives
Reddit is strongest for questions, recommendations and deep topic communities. Subreddits provide persistent discussion, but voting and community rules determine visibility. Your identity is less centered on one portable public profile, so Reddit is an adjacent replacement rather than a Twitter clone.

Discord
Discord works best for private or semi-private communities, live chat, voice, roles and member coordination. It is a poor substitute for open broadcasting because discovery is limited and information can become fragmented across servers.
Substack Notes
Substack Notes suits writers and publishers who want social discovery connected to newsletters and subscriptions. It is most useful when your audience already uses Substack or when converting attention into email subscribers matters more than general-purpose reach.
LinkedIn is appropriate for professional identity, recruiting and business networking. Its professional context makes it a poor replacement for unrestricted public commentary.
Nostr
Nostr appeals to technically experienced users who want a protocol-oriented, relay-based model with multiple clients. Relay quality, moderation and usability vary, and the mainstream audience is much smaller.

How to choose by use case
News and real-time events
Keep your expectations specific. X may remain important where the journalists, officials or local sources you need still post there. Bluesky can suit journalist, academic, technology and specialist communities, while Threads offers greater mainstream scale but a different discovery and search culture. Mastodon can be excellent for specialist groups if you know which servers and accounts to follow. Check speed, source quality, search, spam, verification and reply quality in your own field before moving completely.
Creators and businesses
Measure meaningful outcomes rather than follower totals:
- Reach per post and follower conversion
- Relevant replies and referral traffic
- Link clicks, email signups or sales
- Time spent creating native versions
- Analytics, account recovery and brand-safety needs
A smaller network can outperform a larger one if it produces better referrals or subscriptions. Cross-posting also has costs: different character limits, media formats, hashtags, moderation rules and analytics often require native edits.
Privacy and decentralization
“Decentralized” describes several different choices: provider independence, protocol openness, user control over feeds or the ability to move an account. Mastodon emphasizes independent servers and provider migration. Bluesky emphasizes the AT Protocol, custom feeds and moderation choice. Threads remains Meta-operated even when fediverse sharing is enabled. None should be described as universally private or censorship-free.

Should you delete X?
A staged move protects your identity and relationships better than an immediate deletion.
- Create accounts on one or two alternatives that match your goal.
- Reserve the same username where possible and link a website or domain.
- Follow important contacts manually and tell them where to find you.
- Publish native posts for several weeks rather than only automated duplicates.
- Track relevant replies, conversions and time spent, not just follower counts.
- Download available archives, save recovery codes and preserve key contacts.
- Keep X only if it still serves a specific audience or function; delete it only after the records you need are secured.
Do not rely on any platform as your only professional contact database. Maintain a website, newsletter or other channel you control.
Tools for posting to multiple alternatives
You can use Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon directly. A scheduler is worthwhile only when you need regular publishing, several accounts, collaboration or reporting.
| Tool | Likely buyer | Strength | Caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer | Solo creators and small teams | Lists support for X, Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon, with a free tier | Pricing is per connected channel and features vary by network |
| Hootsuite | Agencies and larger organizations | Monitoring, analytics, workflows and social operations | May be excessive for individuals; current prices require checking |
| Typefully | Text-first writers and creators | Drafting and thread-publishing workflow | Narrower than a full multi-network management suite |
Buffer’s pricing page, observed August 18, 2026, lists a free plan with up to three channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel; Essentials displayed at $5 per month for one channel and Team at $10 per month for one channel when billed annually, with a 14-day paid-plan trial. Prices and integrations can change, so verify Buffer’s current pricing before purchasing. Hootsuite’s plans are listed at Hootsuite’s plans page, and Typefully’s at Typefully’s pricing page.

There is no single successor to Twitter. Threads has the scale, Bluesky has the closest public-posting experience, and Mastodon offers the strongest server-level decentralization. Choose Threads when reach is the priority, Bluesky when familiar conversation and feed control matter most, and Mastodon when provider choice and community governance outweigh convenience. Keep your website, newsletter or community space independent so a future platform change does not erase your audience.
