Quick answer: Turn the Quest 2 off, hold Power + Volume Down until the boot menu appears, select Factory Reset with the volume buttons, press Power, choose Yes, and press Power again. This erases data stored on the headset and returns it to its initial setup state. If the headset is working and paired, you can also reset it in the Meta mobile app.
Before you reset: what you need to know
A factory reset is appropriate before selling or gifting the headset, when you need to remove an account, or when serious software/setup problems require a clean start. It is not the same as restarting: a restart preserves your data.
- Charge the headset before starting so the erase is not interrupted.
- Confirm that you can recover the correct Meta account: login details, password, and any two-factor authentication method.
- Open the Meta mobile app and check Cloud Backup while the headset is still accessible. Cloud Backup may preserve supported saves and settings, but it does not cover every game.
- Try a restart, app update, re-pairing, or a network/Bluetooth check first if the problem is minor.

What a factory reset deletes—and what it does not

Method 1: Reset from the Meta mobile app
Use the app method only when the Quest 2 is powered on, paired, and visible to your phone.
- Open the Meta Quest or Meta Horizon mobile app.
- Open Devices.
- Select your Quest 2.
- Open Advanced Settings (or the headset’s equivalent device-management screen).
- Choose Factory Reset.
- Confirm with Reset.
This path is documented as Devices → headset → Advanced Settings → Factory Reset → Reset: TechRadar’s documented app procedure. Meta has changed app branding and labels over time, so the wording may differ by release; look for the selected headset’s advanced or device-settings page.

When the app method will not work
- The headset is powered off or stuck during startup.
- Bluetooth is disabled or the phone is signed in to the wrong Meta account.
- The app cannot see the headset because pairing, network, or account setup has failed.
If the headset is not visible in the app, use the button method below.
Method 2: Reset with the Quest 2 buttons
- Power the headset completely off.
- Press and hold Power and Volume Down at the same time.
- Keep holding until the boot or USB Update Mode menu appears.
- Use Volume Up or Volume Down to highlight Factory Reset.
- Press Power to select it.
- Highlight Yes when asked to confirm.
- Press Power again and wait while the headset erases and restarts.
Meta support describes this same sequence and specifies that the volume buttons navigate while Power selects: Meta support’s button instructions.

Common button-method mistakes
- Using Volume Up instead of Volume Down to enter the menu.
- Pressing the two buttons one after the other rather than simultaneously.
- Releasing them before the menu appears.
- Trying to select an item with the volume buttons instead of pressing Power.
- Choosing Restart/Reboot, which does not erase data.
- Starting while the headset is not actually powered off.
What happens after the reset
- Turn on the Quest 2 and follow the first-run prompts.
- Select a language and connect to Wi-Fi.
- Install or open the current Meta mobile app.
- Sign in to the intended Meta account and pair the headset.
- Pair or reconnect the controllers.
- Allow required system updates to finish.
- Reinstall purchased apps from the account library.
- Recreate the guardian/boundary, room setup, preferences, and accessibility options.
- Check whether supported cloud saves return after the relevant games are reinstalled.
A reset restores the setup process; it does not preserve installed apps, headset settings, or local configuration.
Resetting before selling or gifting
- Back up any files and supported saves you want to keep, and verify account recovery details.
- Perform the factory reset.
- Wait until the initial setup screen appears.
- Do not sign back in after the reset.
- Remove personal facial interfaces, prescription inserts, and other private accessories; clean the headset and include the agreed controllers, charger, and accessories.
Deleting the phone app or logging out on your phone is not a substitute for erasing the headset itself. The reset removes the previous account from the device, but digital purchases stay with that account and do not transfer to the recipient.

Troubleshooting
The app cannot find the headset
- Turn on the headset and Bluetooth.
- Check that the phone uses the intended Meta account.
- Restart both devices.
- Update or reinstall the Meta app.
- Use the Power + Volume Down method if the headset remains unavailable.
Pairing problems reported by individual users are anecdotal, not proof of a universal defect: an example of a reported pairing issue.
The boot menu shows “No command” or keeps returning
Recheck that you used Power + Volume Down, select Factory Reset with the volume buttons, and confirm with Power. Do not repeatedly choose undocumented options or firmware procedures. If the headset repeatedly returns to the boot menu, contact Meta Support; community reports do not establish one universal fix: Meta support discussion.

Setup or pairing fails after the reset
- Restart the headset and phone.
- Confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are working.
- Update or reinstall the Meta mobile app.
- Try another compatible phone if available.
- Re-pair the controllers.
- Contact Meta Support if setup remains blocked.
Do not call the headset permanently “bricked” solely because setup is stuck; that requires diagnosis by Meta Support.
The reset did not fix the problem
A reset cannot repair controller drift caused by wear, physical damage, a damaged charging port, cracked lens, display failure, battery degradation, or a failed proximity sensor. Use Meta Support or applicable warranty/service options for those symptoms.
You only need to remove one game or save
A full reset is excessive for a single application. Consider uninstalling and reinstalling that app, using its own save controls, managing supported cloud saves, or contacting its developer. Each game’s account and save behavior can differ.
You forgot the unlock pattern
A factory reset can restore access, but it erases local data. Make sure you can sign in to the Meta account needed during setup before proceeding.
