Bad Bunny was Spotify’s most-streamed artist globally, while Drake led the U.S. ranking. Taylor Swift, BTS, Drake and Justin Bieber completed the global top five. These were Spotify’s year-end rankings, separate from each listener’s personalized Wrapped story.
Bad Bunny topped Spotify’s global 2021 artist ranking
Bad Bunny finished No. 1 on Spotify’s global 2021 artist list for the second consecutive year. Spotify reported more than 9.1 billion streams for him and noted that he did not release a new album during 2021. The figures and context come from Spotify’s announcement: What the World Streamed Most in 2021.

Spotify framed the other global leaders around major releases and moments: Taylor Swift’s second-place showing was linked to the popularity of Red (Taylor’s Version); BTS had a major year around “Butter”; Drake released Certified Lover Boy in September; and Justin Bieber released Justice, featuring collaborations with artists around the world. Those are Spotify’s explanations, not an independent causal analysis.

Drake was No. 1 in the United States
The U.S. list was not the same as the global list. Drake ranked first among Spotify’s U.S. artists, followed by Taylor Swift, Juice WRLD, Kanye West and Bad Bunny.

Therefore, “Spotify’s most-streamed artist” needs a geography label: Bad Bunny was the global winner for Spotify’s 2021 year-end ranking, while Drake was the U.S. winner.
Olivia Rodrigo dominated the song and album charts
Artist, song and album rankings produced different winners. Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license” was Spotify’s global No. 1 song, with Spotify reporting more than 1.1 billion streams. Her debut album SOUR was also the global No. 1 album.

- OASIS, the collaborative album between J Balvin and Bad Bunny, was released in 2019 and features the singles, "Que Pretendes," "La Cancion," "Yo Le Llego," and "Cuidao por Ahi
Rodrigo appeared twice in the global song top five, with “drivers license” at No. 1 and “good 4 u” at No. 4. That success does not make her the No. 1 global artist; Bad Bunny held that position in the artist ranking.

What the personalized Wrapped experience included
Spotify used “Wrapped 2021” for two related products. The public rankings summarized listening across Spotify, while the in-app experience showed an eligible user’s own listening history. Spotify described the experience in The Wait Is Over: Your Spotify 2021 Wrapped Is Here.

How to interpret the 2021 rankings
- They are Spotify’s year-end results for 2021, not a real-time chart.
- Global and U.S. rankings measure different listening populations and should not be merged.
- Artist, song and album winners are separate categories: Bad Bunny led artists globally, while Olivia Rodrigo led both global songs and albums.
- Spotify said the campaign reflected listening and discovery by more than 381 million people worldwide.
- The announcement does not publish a complete technical methodology covering the exact cutoff date, weighting, collaborative-track credit or treatment of every listening type.
- Reported totals such as 9.1 billion and 1.1 billion are Spotify’s figures, not presented here as independently audited totals. Track titles containing “with” or “feat.” also should not be used to infer how plays were allocated to artist totals.
