Microsoft Office is no longer a single ladder of editions. The main choices are Microsoft 365, a subscription with continuing feature updates and services; Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024, one-time purchases for one PC or Mac; and Office LTSC 2024, a volume-licensed release for controlled business and government deployments. Business, enterprise, education, and nonprofit Microsoft 365 plans are separate licensing families.
What “Microsoft Office edition” means today
“Edition” can refer to a release year, a suite of applications, a subscription plan, a licensing channel, or a standalone app. For example, Office 2024 is a release; Office Home 2024 is a retail suite; Microsoft 365 Personal is a consumer subscription; Office LTSC 2024 is a volume-licensed deployment channel; and Visio is a standalone product family. Comparing Office Home 2024 directly with Microsoft 365 Business Premium as if they were rungs on one feature ladder misses the differences in licensing, services, and intended users.
In practical terms, Microsoft’s current range falls into four groups:
- Microsoft 365 subscriptions: continuously updated apps bundled with online services; plans vary by consumer, business, education, and enterprise licensing.
- Office 2024 retail: fixed-feature, one-time-purchase suites primarily for home, student, and small-business use.
- Office LTSC 2024: a fixed-feature, volume-licensed release for organizations that need tightly controlled deployments.
- Specialized and legacy products: education, nonprofit, government, Project, Visio, and older Office releases, with distinct eligibility or support terms. Microsoft’s suite and requirements overview covers several organization-specific offerings.
“Office 365” is the older name largely replaced by Microsoft 365. “Microsoft 365 Apps” generally refers to subscription desktop Office applications, not necessarily the full email, collaboration, security, and administration bundle of a business plan.

Microsoft 365 consumer plans
Consumer plans combine different amounts of app access, storage, and online features. Exact entitlements, Copilot access, and pricing can change; check Microsoft’s current consumer plan comparison and checkout page for your region before buying.
| Plan | Typical fit and distinction | US price signal |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Basic | A lower-cost subscription centered on cloud storage and online services; do not assume it includes the full installed desktop Office suite. | Not stated in the cited plan details. |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | One individual; the subscription includes continuously updated Office apps and 1 TB of OneDrive storage. | $99.99 per year or $9.99 per month shown by Microsoft’s US store; verify current checkout pricing. |
| Microsoft 365 Family | One to six people, with benefits for each shared user and up to 6 TB total OneDrive storage, generally 1 TB per person. | $129.99 per year or $12.99 per month shown by Microsoft’s US store; verify current checkout pricing. |
| Microsoft 365 Premium | Up to six users and up to 6 TB total storage, with broader or more extensive Copilot access than lower consumer plans; features and usage limits depend on the plan. | $199.99 per year or $19.99 per month shown by Microsoft’s US store; verify current checkout pricing. |
The listed amounts are US-store price signals, not guaranteed current prices; tax, promotions, billing terms, and regional availability can change the amount you pay. Basic’s precise app entitlements should be confirmed on the live plan page.
Office 2024 one-time-purchase editions
Office 2024 is for buyers who prefer a fixed set of applications for one computer over an ongoing subscription. Microsoft says these retail editions receive security and quality updates, but not continuing feature upgrades; a future major release is a separate purchase. They are not simply Microsoft 365 with the subscription removed: they do not include its broader service bundle or ongoing feature additions. See Microsoft’s Office 2024 and Office LTSC FAQ for current product details.

- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
| Edition | Applications listed by Microsoft | License and fit |
|---|---|---|
| Office Home 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote | One-time purchase for one PC or Mac; aimed at students and families. Outlook is not included. |
| Office Home & Business 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook | One-time purchase for one PC or Mac; intended for families and small businesses needing Outlook. Check the applicable license terms for commercial-use rights rather than relying on the product name alone. |
Microsoft’s US Store results showed Office Home 2024 at both $149.99 and $179.99 at different crawl times. That inconsistency is not a reliable current price; check the live regional listing. Microsoft’s product comparison and purchase page is the official starting point.
A one-time purchase is often called “perpetual,” but that means a license for that release without a recurring subscription—not lifetime support, unlimited devices, or a free upgrade to a later Office version.
Microsoft 365 business plans are a different category
Business subscriptions combine application licensing with varying amounts of business email, collaboration, storage, security, and device management. Microsoft’s small-business plans are generally limited to organizations with up to 300 users. Teams availability and plan variants differ in some markets, so confirm the exact SKU before purchase.

|---|---|

| Microsoft 365 Business Basic | Primarily web and mobile apps plus business services such as email, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive; do not assume it includes the full desktop Office suite. |
| Microsoft 365 Business Standard | Business services plus installed desktop Office applications. |
| Microsoft 365 Business Premium | A Business Standard-style productivity bundle with stronger security, identity, and device-management capabilities. |
Use Microsoft’s SMB plan comparison to compare included services. Business-plan prices are not given here because geography, billing commitment, Teams inclusion, channel, tax, and commercial price changes affect them. Office Home & Business 2024 includes Outlook, but that alone does not supply hosted business email, Teams, SharePoint, identity management, or organization-wide administration.
Enterprise, education, government, and nonprofit licensing
Microsoft offers distinct plans and eligibility rules for large enterprises, schools and universities, government organizations, and nonprofits. Depending on the plan, these can combine desktop apps with Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, identity, compliance, security, analytics, and administration. Selection depends on user count, desktop-app needs, email and collaboration, compliance obligations, device management, eligibility, and regional licensing variants. Consult Microsoft’s organization suite overview or a qualified licensing partner instead of treating these as retail Office editions.

Office LTSC 2024: a controlled-deployment option
Office LTSC 2024 is Microsoft’s volume-licensed, on-premises Office release for commercial and government customers that need stable, tightly controlled software—for example, where regular feature changes conflict with validation, regulation, or restricted connectivity. Microsoft says organizations already using Microsoft 365 Apps generally do not need to switch to LTSC. It is not a discounted consumer version of Microsoft 365.

| Office LTSC Standard 2024 | The standard commercial suite; check Microsoft’s deployment documentation for the precise application set under the relevant operating system and license channel. |
| Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 | Microsoft lists Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word. Access is Windows-only. |
LTSC receives security and quality updates, not ongoing feature updates. Microsoft’s configuration-support matrix gives Office LTSC 2024 a support end date of October 9, 2029. It is volume licensed rather than a routine consumer retail checkout product. See the Office LTSC 2024 overview and Microsoft’s Office and Windows configuration support matrix.
- Consider LTSC when internet access is restricted, feature changes require formal testing, or an operational or regulatory requirement calls for a stable release.
- It is a poor fit when the priority is new features, broad cloud collaboration, flexible per-user use across devices, or subscription-linked AI features.
Publisher is not included in Office LTSC 2024; Microsoft’s FAQ says Publisher is being retired in 2026. Do not assume an application found in an older suite remains part of a current edition.

| Question | Microsoft 365 subscription | Office 2024 retail |
|---|---|---|
| How is it licensed? | Recurring subscription; consumer and business terms vary. | One-time purchase for one PC or Mac for the listed Home editions. |
| Feature changes | Subscribers receive current versions, feature updates, security updates, and bug fixes. | Fixed feature set with security and quality updates, but no ongoing feature additions or included upgrade to a future major release. |
| Services | Plan-dependent storage and online services; business plans can add email, collaboration, security, and administration. | No Microsoft 365 subscription service bundle. |
| Multiple people or devices | Consumer plans support their stated user-sharing terms; subscription apps work across supported devices. | Home 2024 and Home & Business 2024 are one-computer purchases. |
| Best suited to | People who value current features, storage, collaboration, or multiple-device access. | Someone who wants classic apps on one machine and prefers not to renew a subscription. |
The subscription route also depends on connectivity for installation, activation, subscription validation, updates, and cloud services. Installed desktop apps may support ordinary offline editing, but cloud files and collaboration require connectivity; offline use should not be confused with being able to install or validate a license indefinitely without internet. Microsoft advises evaluating LTSC where connectivity is unavailable or restricted. Microsoft explains the distinction between Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 here.

A simple US purchase-price illustration
Using the observed US store signals—not guaranteed current prices—Office Home 2024 at $179.99 equals about 1.8 years of Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99 per year; at the other observed Home price of $149.99, it equals about 1.5 years. This arithmetic compares purchase amounts only. It excludes promotions, taxes, OneDrive and other service value, future releases, device count, and any business licensing requirement. Family can be better value when multiple household members need Office because it covers up to six people under its sharing terms.
Which edition fits your situation?
- One person with several devices: Microsoft 365 Personal is the closer fit if cloud storage and current features matter.
- Household with two or more users: compare Microsoft 365 Family’s shared benefits and individual storage against separate purchases.
- User who specifically wants expanded Copilot features: consider Microsoft 365 Premium only after checking the current feature and usage limits against the price.
- Student or home user on one computer without Outlook: Office Home 2024 fits a preference for a fixed, non-subscription suite.
- Freelancer or small business on one computer needing Outlook: examine Office Home & Business 2024 and its license terms; choose a business subscription if hosted email, collaboration, or administration is needed.
- Small organization wanting desktop apps and storage: compare Microsoft 365 Apps for business with Business Standard if email and collaboration are also needed.
- Organization needing security and device controls: assess Business Premium or the relevant larger-organization plan, rather than buying a consumer suite.
- Regulated or restricted deployment: evaluate LTSC through the organization’s volume-licensing channel and check that its fixed apps meet operational needs.
Apps, platforms, and licensing details that change the comparison
An app marked “included” may mean a desktop application, a web or mobile app, or a service integration. Windows and Mac suites are not identical: Access is Windows-only, and availability of other apps and features can vary by platform and plan. Check the product listing for the exact device before buying.
Also separate these update types: security and quality updates fix vulnerabilities and problems; feature updates add or change capabilities. Office 2024 and LTSC have the former without the continuous feature additions associated with Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
Commercial use is a licensing question, not just a question of whether Word or Excel will run. Consumer product terms may restrict use; Microsoft presents Home & Business 2024 for small-business use, but buyers should read the applicable terms. Microsoft 365 Apps for business or another commercial plan may be more appropriate for multi-user deployment, centralized management, or business services.

Older Office versions and names
Office 2016 and Office 2019 reached end of support in October 2025, while Office LTSC 2021 is scheduled to reach end of support in October 2026, according to Microsoft’s configuration support matrix. An older copy may still launch, but that does not establish that it receives security updates or remains compatible with current operating systems and Microsoft services. Check product lifecycle and system compatibility separately before keeping an old deployment.
Quick Recap
Common licensing mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a one-time license to cover several computers: the Office Home 2024 and Home & Business 2024 retail products described here are for one PC or Mac.
- Expecting Office 2024 to gain new features: security and quality fixes are not feature upgrades.
- Buying “Professional Plus lifetime” from an unknown marketplace: Professional Plus 2024 belongs to the LTSC volume-licensing context, not an ordinary consumer retail ladder. A cheap key can be unauthorized, mismatched to the license, revoked, or sold without legitimate support. Buy through Microsoft, an authorized retailer, or the organization’s legitimate licensing channel.
- Confusing Outlook with business email: an Outlook app does not by itself provide hosted mail, Teams, SharePoint, identity, or administration services.
- Choosing a continuous-update plan for a validated environment: confirm that the update cadence fits the organization’s testing and compliance requirements before deployment.
