Jump Lists in Windows: How to Use, Clear, Disable, and Troubleshoot Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Windows Jump List is the shortcut menu that appears when you right-click an app icon on the taskbar or Start menu. Depending on the app and your settings, it can show recently or frequently opened files, pinned destinations, custom groups, and commands such as New window or Compose message. This guide explains how to use Jump Lists, remove entries, control recent-item tracking, reset damaged lists, and understand the privacy and administration limits.

What is a Jump List?

Jump Lists are part of the Windows shell, not a separate application. They are associated with an application icon, whether that icon is a pinned launcher or represents an app that is currently running. Microsoft documents the feature for taskbar and Start-menu icons, with the exact contents determined by Windows, the app, and organizational policy (Microsoft Learn).

  • Recent: destinations Windows records as recently opened.
  • Frequent: commonly used destinations when the app and Windows expose them.
  • Pinned: items you deliberately keep available.
  • Tasks: fixed actions supplied by the app, such as opening a new window.
  • Custom groups: developer-defined collections such as projects or workspaces.

Two apps can therefore have very different menus. An app may have no custom tasks, no recent destinations, or no Jump List support beyond the standard shell behavior.

Where to find Jump Lists in Windows 11

From the taskbar

  1. Find the app’s icon on the taskbar. It may be pinned or belong to an open app.
  2. Right-click the icon.
  3. Select a listed destination or command.

From Start

Open Start, locate the app entry or shortcut, and right-click it when the Windows release and app support the menu. Start-menu layout and wording differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Microsoft defines Jump Lists as menus available from an app’s taskbar or Start icon (Microsoft Win32 taskbar extensions).

How to use a Jump List

Open a recent or pinned destination

Right-click the app icon and select the file, folder, website, or other destination. Windows launches it through the associated application.

Run an app task

Choose a command supplied by the app, such as creating a new window or document. These commands can remain available even when there are no recent files.

Pin a useful destination

Right-click a recent entry and choose the available Pin to this list command, or select the pin control if the app displays one. Pinning keeps a deliberate shortcut separate from ordinary recency, although the exact controls vary by app.

Remove one recent entry

Right-click the app icon, right-click the unwanted entry, and select Remove from this list. This removes the Jump List record, not the underlying file. The command may be unavailable for pinned entries, custom categories, orphaned shortcuts, or applications that manage their own history.

Action Effect
Remove from this list Removes one displayed recent destination.
Pin to this list Keeps a destination as a deliberate shortcut.
Unpin the app from the taskbar Removes the app icon; it does not reliably erase the app’s other history.

How to turn recent Jump List items on or off

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Personalization.
  3. Select Start.
  4. Turn Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer on or off.

Microsoft’s current support wording makes this a combined recent-item control (Microsoft Support; settings catalog). Turning it off normally stops Windows from showing and tracking recent destinations in those surfaces; it is not a Jump-Lists-only switch.

The setting does not necessarily remove application-owned Recent lists, entries in an app’s File > Open dialog, pinned destinations, or developer-supplied tasks. It also does not erase browser history, cloud activity, application logs, file-system metadata, or enterprise audit records.

How to clear Jump Lists

Remove a single item first

Use Remove from this list on the specific recent entry whenever possible. It is the least disruptive option and leaves other applications’ lists alone.

Reset every app’s cached lists

Use a cache reset only when entries are stale, corrupted, or cannot be removed normally. The procedure below is community support guidance, not a selective per-app erase. It resets data for all applications and can remove pinned destinations depending on how an app stores them.

  1. Save work and close open applications.
  2. Open Task Manager, select Windows Explorer, and choose Restart. If necessary, end Explorer before running the commands.
  3. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
del /f /q "%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsRecentAutomaticDestinations*"
del /f /q "%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsRecentCustomDestinations*"
start explorer.exe

The cache locations are %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsRecentAutomaticDestinations and %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsRecentCustomDestinations. Windows rebuilds them as you use applications again. This removes Jump List records and cache data, not the original documents. Microsoft Q&A describes the Explorer restart and cache approach (Q&A guidance, cache locations, deletion troubleshooting).

Jump List troubleshooting

No Jump List appears

  • Check the recent-item toggle under Settings > Personalization > Start.
  • Open another app’s list to determine whether the problem is global.
  • The app may have no recent destinations or may not provide custom tasks.
  • Verify that you are right-clicking the app’s normal shortcut, not an unusual launcher.
  • Restart Windows Explorer.
  • On a managed device, a policy may hide or clear recent items.

Only one app is affected

Close and reopen the app, unpin and re-pin its taskbar shortcut, and check the app’s own Recent-history settings. A moved, renamed, deleted, or unavailable file can leave an orphaned destination. Application updates or repackaging can also change the app identity Windows uses for its list. Repair or update that application before resetting the global cache.

Every app is affected

Check the Windows setting and management policies, restart Explorer, and only then consider the global cache reset. If the option is disabled or greyed out, Group Policy or mobile-device management may control it.

An entry returns after removal

The app may reopen or re-register the destination, or the item may come from the app’s own history rather than Windows’ Jump List. Delete it in the application’s settings as well.

Privacy and workplace controls

Jump Lists can reveal filenames, folder names, websites, network paths, and work projects to anyone who can see your desktop. This matters on shared PCs, loaners, reception-area machines, screen shares, and screenshots.

For managed computers, administrators can use policy settings such as:

  • User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar > Do not keep history of recently opened documents
  • Policies that clear recent-document history at sign-out.
  • Taskbar policies that stop tracking or displaying items opened from remote locations.

See Microsoft’s Start policy settings and Taskbar policy settings. Edition, policy-template, and management configuration determine which controls are available. Explicitly pinned remote items may remain visible even when remote tracking is restricted.

For developers: what an app can add

Windows apps can provide fixed tasks, custom groups, and pinned destinations alongside system-managed Recent and Frequent sections. Microsoft’s JumpList API requires package identity (including MSIX or external-location packaging), supports Windows 10 version 1607/build 14393 and later, and does not support unpackaged apps through that API (Jump List API documentation).

var task = JumpListItem.CreateWithArguments(
    "/compose",
    "New Message");

task.Description = "Compose a new message";
jumpList.Items.Add(task);

await jumpList.SaveAsync();

Clearing an app’s custom Items collection does not remove Windows-managed Recent and Frequent sections. For classic Win32 software, IApplicationDestinations::RemoveAllDestinations clears Recent and Frequent destinations but leaves user-pinned items, custom categories, and task entries (Microsoft Win32 API reference).

Choosing the right fix

Goal Best first method
Remove one unwanted file Remove from this list
Keep a project handy Pin the destination
Stop Windows showing recent destinations Turn off the combined Start/Jump Lists/File Explorer setting
Repair lists across all apps Restart Explorer, then use the cache reset as a last resort
Control company devices Use Group Policy or MDM
Clear only one app Use that app’s own history controls; Windows has no universally reliable consumer per-app cache command

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Jump Lists the same as Recent files?

No. Recent destinations are only one possible section. A Jump List can also contain pinned items, frequent destinations, app tasks, and custom groups.

Does clearing a Jump List delete the original file?

No. Removing an entry or resetting the cache removes the shortcut record; it does not delete the document, folder, or website.

Can I clear only one app’s Windows cache?

Windows does not provide a universally reliable consumer control for that. Prefer the app’s own history settings or remove individual entries before using the global cache reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a deleted file still appear?

The Jump List can retain an orphaned destination after a file is moved, renamed, deleted, or becomes unavailable. Remove the entry, then restart the app or Explorer if necessary.

Do all Windows programs support Jump Lists?

No. The available sections and commands depend on the application’s shell integration, package identity, recent activity, and policy.

The Bottom Line

Leave Jump Lists enabled when their convenience outweighs visible-history concerns. For cleanup, remove individual entries first; use the global cache reset only for persistent or corrupted lists. Disabling recent items improves what Windows displays in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer, but it is not a complete deletion of application or system activity.
