One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYes—recent survey evidence indicates that tech professionals are reporting substantially more burnout than they did in the previous comparison period. Dice’s latest U.S. survey found that 46% of employed technology professionals reported being burned out, compared with 31% in its 2024 comparison; 24% said they were very burned out. The survey covered 1,159 professionals in November and December 2025, so it is a strong warning signal—not a clinical census of every technology worker worldwide.
What the latest numbers actually show
Dice’s 2026 Tech Sentiment Report provides the clearest year-over-year comparison currently available:
| Measure | Latest Dice result | Comparison and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Reported burnout | 46% of employed U.S. tech professionals | 31% in Dice’s 2024 comparison |
| Very burned out | 24% | About twice the level Dice reported in prior years |
| Active job search among the very burned out | 70% | Less than half among respondents who were not burned out |
The comparison is between survey periods, not the same workers followed continuously. Differences in sample composition, wording, economic conditions and how respondents understand “burnout” can affect a year-over-year result. “Nearly half of tech workers are burned out” is therefore too broad; the defensible statement is that nearly half of surveyed employed U.S. technology professionals reported burnout.
Burnout is more than a difficult week
The World Health Organization describes burnout as an occupational phenomenon arising from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Its characteristic dimensions are exhaustion, mental distance or cynicism toward the job, and reduced professional efficacy.

That is different from ordinary deadline fatigue, disliking a manager, depression, an anxiety disorder or a single bad week. Most workplace surveys measure self-identification or screening results rather than a clinical diagnosis. Persistent symptoms, depression, panic, thoughts of self-harm or inability to function require medical or mental-health support.
Why pressure has intensified
Workload and understaffing
Fewer people may be carrying the same product commitments, security obligations and operational coverage. Unplanned incidents, interruptions, maintenance and documentation compete with planned delivery, while after-hours messages and on-call rotations reduce recovery time.
Layoff anxiety and survivor workload
When teams lose colleagues or hiring is frozen, remaining employees often inherit responsibilities without additional authority or time. Fear of becoming the next layoff can make people reluctant to set boundaries, take leave or challenge an unrealistic deadline. Dice associates layoff concern with higher burnout, weaker confidence in job stability and more job-search activity.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Low control and conflicting priorities
High demand becomes harder to sustain when priorities change without consultation, product, engineering and security leaders issue competing instructions, or ownership during incidents is unclear. A useful Job Demands–Resources lens is that risk rises when demands stay high while autonomy, support, staffing and recovery remain inadequate. A peer-reviewed IT study discusses workload, role conflict, role ambiguity, supervisor support and effort–reward imbalance as relevant factors: Frontiers in Public Health.
AI can relieve work and intensify it
There is no solid basis for saying AI alone caused the increase. It is better understood as an amplifier that changes the composition and pace of work.
| Potential relief | Potential new burden |
|---|---|
| Automates repetitive documentation, formatting, basic coding and troubleshooting | Raises expectations for output and response speed |
| Helps some employees meet deadlines | Requires continuous learning and tool adaptation |
| Reduces parts of manual work | Adds review, testing, security, compliance and accountability work |
| Provides drafting or analysis assistance | Creates uncertainty about role security and the reliability of generated results |
An Appknox 2025 survey report found both reduced repetitive effort and increased expectations or stress, but it included only 51 professionals across several regions. Treat it as directional evidence, not a population estimate.

The labor-market picture is not uniformly negative. The Linux Foundation’s 2026 State of Tech Talent report describes a positive net hiring effect associated with AI in surveyed organizations. Its self-reported data cannot isolate AI from macroeconomic conditions, post-pandemic corrections and other factors. AI may reduce repetitive work while increasing pace, oversight, learning demands and anxiety about future employability.
Who faces the greatest exposure?
Dice reports higher burnout among mid-career professionals, people with roughly 10–19 years of experience, millennials, employees of companies with fewer than 250 workers, and people worried about layoffs. These are not inherently vulnerable groups; they often combine delivery responsibility, mentoring, leadership expectations, family or financial obligations and limited ability to disconnect.
Cybersecurity
Incident response, breach pressure, compliance deadlines, on-call work and staffing shortages can create repeated high-intensity cycles.

IT operations and system administration
Tool sprawl, patching, outages, interruptions and broad “always available” expectations make preventive work difficult to protect. The public PDQ State of Sysadmin page confirms 2026 research involving more than 1,000 IT professionals, although detailed findings are not stated on that page.
Software engineering
Accelerated release cycles, technical debt, code-review volume and the need to validate AI-generated output can increase cognitive load even when typing effort falls.
Managers, support and infrastructure teams
Managers carry delivery and people responsibilities, often without control over staffing or deadlines. Support and infrastructure specialists face constant interruption and may receive little recognition for preventive work. The 2026 Frontiers study found no statistically significant overall burnout difference between leadership/management and associate-level IT workers; its data came from a convenience sample collected in February–May 2023, so it provides occupational context rather than a 2025–2026 trend estimate.

Warning signs to take seriously
- Persistent exhaustion that ordinary rest does not resolve.
- Cynicism, detachment or emotional numbness toward work.
- A declining sense of effectiveness, more mistakes or poor concentration.
- Avoiding colleagues or customers and becoming unusually irritable.
- Sleep disruption, longer hours and less recovery between workdays.
- Considering leaving the field solely to escape current working conditions.
What employees can do now
Individual coping can help, but it should not turn a staffing problem into a personal-resilience test. Start by making the workload visible and asking for concrete trade-offs.
- Record the load: Track hours, interruptions, on-call shifts, incident recovery and responsibilities added after staffing changes.
- Force priority choices: Ask, “Which two priorities should be dropped if this new task is added?”
- Request scope reduction: A smaller commitment is usually more effective than a general request to “manage time better.”
- Set response rules: Agree which channels and response times apply to nonurgent communication.
- Protect recovery: Use vacation, post-incident recovery and uninterrupted off-hours without treating them as performance failures.
- Ask about AI standards: Clarify what quality, testing, security review and learning time are expected when AI tools are used.
- Escalate safely: Use a manager, HR, union, professional association or employee-assistance service; seek clinical care when symptoms impair health or functioning.
Changing jobs may be reasonable when chronic overload is normalized, boundaries are punished, scope will not be reduced, health symptoms persist or raising safety and workload concerns triggers retaliation. Financial obligations, immigration status, healthcare, caregiving and local labor markets can limit that option.
What employers should change
- Measure workload, after-hours activity, on-call burden and attrition by team, role, tenure, gender, race, company size and work arrangement.
- Require explicit scope, staffing or deadline trade-offs whenever new work is added.
- Protect maintenance, documentation, testing and learning time instead of treating them as after-hours work.
- Create recovery rules after incidents or sustained overtime.
- Train managers to identify workload and role-conflict problems, not merely to recommend wellness content.
- Publish AI-use policies, provide training and measure whether automation reduces work or only raises output targets.
- Give employees control over tool use where quality and safety permit.
- Offer confidential mental-health benefits, while recognizing that they cannot compensate for chronic understaffing.
ISACA’s 2025 global survey of 7,726 technology professionals identifies heavy workloads and long hours as leading stressors and treats work-life balance, career growth and retention as organizational issues: ISACA Tech Workplace and Culture Survey.
How to judge a burnout statistic
Before comparing claims, check the sample size, geography, role definition, field dates, question wording or validated instrument, recruitment method, response rate, whether the same people were surveyed, and whether the result measures self-identification, symptoms, risk or a diagnosis. Also consider sponsorship and commercial incentives. Different surveys should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
What tools can—and cannot—fix
Coaching, meditation and sleep services may improve access to support. Operational platforms can reduce avoidable interruptions, clarify ownership and automate routine administration. But any tool can worsen burnout if it becomes a way to raise ticket quotas, monitor activity or justify permanently higher workloads. The test is whether it creates scope clarity, fewer interruptions or real recovery time.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Reported burnout among surveyed tech professionals rose sharply between Dice’s 2024 comparison and its late-2025 survey, from 31% to 46%. The evidence does not show one universal clinical rate or prove that AI caused the increase. Workload, understaffing, insecurity, low control and AI-driven pace are interacting pressures; the durable remedy is redesigning work, staffing and recovery—not asking employees to tolerate more.
