The widely shared “real-life” iPhone 16 images and videos showed physical dummy units, not working retail phones. They provided useful evidence about exterior proportions, camera placement, buttons and possible colors, but they could not establish performance, camera quality, battery life or software. Because Apple released the iPhone 16 range in 2024, this is now a retrospective look at what the pre-launch mockups actually revealed.
What exactly was leaked?
Reports in July and August 2024 showed still photographs and hands-on video of nonfunctional iPhone 16-series mockups. Android Authority described the circulating footage as dummy units, while related reports connected the models with accessory-industry prototypes and CAD-based designs.
A dummy phone is built to reproduce approximate dimensions and external features so case, screen-protector and manufacturing work can begin before launch. It can show where a camera island, port or button is likely to sit. It cannot confirm the electronics inside or guarantee that every visible detail reaches production.
The clearest video report appeared on August 8, 2024, in Android Authority’s coverage. Additional images and color reporting appeared in iDownloadBlog, Hindustan Times Tech and Gizmochina.

What the standard iPhone 16 appeared to show
Vertical rear cameras
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus mockups placed their two rear cameras one above the other instead of using the diagonal arrangement seen on recent non-Pro models. That positioning could make the main and ultrawide cameras better suited to spatial photos and video when the phone is held horizontally, but the mockup alone did not prove that Apple would enable a particular feature.
Action button on non-Pro models
The dummy units suggested that Apple would replace the traditional Ring/Silent switch with the programmable Action button on the standard phones, extending a control previously associated with the Pro line.

A possible camera control
Reports also showed a cutout or control on the lower-right side. It was widely interpreted as a dedicated camera-related control, later associated in reporting with Apple’s camera-control functionality. At leak stage, a cutout was not proof of its final name, operation or availability on every model.
More saturated colors
Images of the standard mockups showed alleged black, white, blue, green and pink finishes. Their stronger appearance suggested a return to more vivid colors, but plastic models, studio lighting and image processing can make a final glass finish look very different.

Familiar chassis
The overall flat-sided shape and port arrangement looked close to the iPhone 15 family. The camera orientation and controls, rather than a wholesale enclosure redesign, were the most visible changes. Claims about a matte or frosted back were particularly uncertain because a plastic dummy cannot reproduce Apple’s final glass texture or reflectivity.
What the iPhone 16 Pro mockups appeared to show
Larger displays and slimmer borders
Reports pointed to a 6.3-inch iPhone 16 Pro and a 6.9-inch iPhone 16 Pro Max, compared with the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes associated with the iPhone 15 Pro generation. Leaked dimensions also suggested narrower bezels, allowing more screen without an equally large increase in the phone’s footprint. MacRumors documented the reported measurements and bezel changes in its design-dimensions report.

Evolutionary titanium design
The Pro units retained the flat sides, Dynamic Island and three-camera layout associated with the iPhone 15 Pro family. The story was refinement rather than a completely new silhouette: larger proportions, thinner borders and a more substantial-looking camera area.
An alleged bronze or rose finish
Leaked Pro units were described variously as rose, rose gold, bronze or “Desert Titanium.” Naming was inconsistent, and color reproduction from unfinished mockups was unreliable. Android Headlines explicitly warned that the video showed a dummy, not a functioning Pro Max; PhoneArena reported the same alleged color footage.

How reliable was the leak?
The evidence had different strengths. Physical geometry was more useful than technical or cosmetic claims:

Confidence guide
- Higher confidence: vertical cameras on the standard models, larger Pro display proportions and the broad button layout.
- Medium confidence: exact colors, camera-bump dimensions and bezel measurements.
- Low confidence: processor, memory, storage, battery, camera performance, pricing, software and water resistance.
What the mockups could not tell us
- Final glass, titanium or aluminum materials and surface treatment.
- Display brightness, refresh behavior and image quality.
- Camera sensors, image processing and optical performance.
- Processor performance, memory, storage tiers, thermals and battery endurance.
- Water-resistance rating, software features, regional availability and retail prices.
- Whether every dummy accurately represented production hardware.
A case opening is not proof that a button will ship, and a phone shown outdoors or in rain is not evidence of official water-resistance testing.
How to check the final phones
For the released design, dimensions, colors, controls and specifications, use Apple’s own pages rather than the pre-launch images:

Those pages are the appropriate authority for separating what Apple ultimately shipped from what accessory makers and leakers showed beforehand.

Bottom line
The leak was valuable as a preview of physical design, not as a specification sheet. The standard iPhone 16 models appeared to receive the most obvious exterior change—vertically aligned cameras, the Action button and a possible camera control—while the Pro models appeared to refine the titanium form with larger screens, narrower bezels and a rumored new finish. Every technical, cosmetic or pricing detail beyond that required Apple’s final announcement.
