Android 15 Adaptive Timeout on Pixel: What It Does and How to Enable It

Adaptive Timeout can turn a Pixel’s display off earlier when the phone determines it is not being used. Google says it can save battery and help prevent accidental calls. Find it at Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout → Adaptive timeout.

It is a Pixel feature, not a setting guaranteed on every Android 15 phone—or even one documented as available on every Android 15-compatible Pixel. Check your own phone’s menu rather than relying on the Android version alone.

What Adaptive Timeout does

A regular screen timeout turns the display off after a fixed period without interaction. Adaptive Timeout adds an automatic option: the phone may switch the display off sooner if it judges that the device is idle. Google describes the aims as reducing unnecessary screen-on time, saving battery and helping prevent accidental calls. It does not publish a precise timing rule or a battery-savings figure, so the result can vary with use.

Independent reporting during Android 15 Beta 3 suggested proximity-related sensing may affect the behavior. Google has not published the complete detection logic, so there is no guaranteed sensor trigger or exact number of seconds to expect. Google’s Pixel help page describes the feature’s purpose; early reporting supplies the testing-based context.

Is Adaptive Timeout available on every Android 15 phone?

No. Adaptive Timeout is presented as a Pixel setting, not a universal Android 15 feature that every phone maker must include. It was reported on the Pixel 8 series during Android 15 Beta 3, but that early report is not a complete current compatibility list. Google’s current support documentation explains the setting without listing every compatible Pixel model.

Android 15 compatibility and Adaptive Timeout availability are different questions. Google lists Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, Pixel 7-series phones, Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet, Pixel 8-series devices and Pixel 9-series devices as eligible for Android 15; that does not establish that every listed device exposes every Pixel-specific feature. Android 15 was released to AOSP on September 3, 2024, with supported Pixel availability beginning in October 2024. Check the setting on the individual device. Google’s Android 15 device information describes OS support, while Android 15 release notes do not make Adaptive Timeout a universal Android feature.

How to turn Adaptive Timeout on

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display & touch (some software may show Display and touch).
  3. Tap Screen timeout.
  4. Enable or select Adaptive timeout.

The wording and availability can vary with device software. Google’s documented path is Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout → Adaptive timeout.

How to turn it off or choose a fixed timeout

Return to Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout and select a duration instead of Adaptive Timeout. Google’s screen-timeout help lists 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes and 10 minutes; available choices can differ by software. A fixed duration is the more predictable option. Google’s screen-timeout instructions cover the choices.

Adaptive Timeout, Screen attention and other display settings

Setting What it controls
Adaptive Timeout May turn the screen off earlier when the phone judges it is not being used.
Screen attention Attempts to keep the screen on while you are looking at it. Google lists it for Pixel 4 and later; performance can be less reliable in direct sunlight and works best in well-lit conditions.
Fixed Screen timeout Turns the display off after a selected duration, rather than adapting to perceived use.
Adaptive brightness Adjusts brightness in response to ambient light and learned preferences; it does not set when the display turns off.
Always-on Display A separate setting that can show limited information after the main display goes dark; Adaptive Timeout is not documented as disabling it.

Screen attention and Adaptive Timeout have different aims: one tries to keep the screen on when you are looking, while the other can shorten screen-on time when the phone seems unattended. They may affect what you observe when testing timeout behavior, but neither guarantees the screen will stay on during every reading, video or hands-free scenario. Google’s Pixel display guidance describes Screen attention and Adaptive brightness separately. Google also treats Always-on Display and shorter screen timeout as separate battery controls in its battery guidance.

Why Adaptive Timeout may seem ineffective

  • You are reading without touching the phone. A stationary device or little interaction may be interpreted as inactivity. Try a longer fixed timeout, or Screen attention if it is available and reliable in your environment.
  • Screen attention is enabled. It may keep the display on while it detects that you are looking at it, making a test of early shutoff confusing.
  • A case or cover obstructs a sensor. Sensor obstruction is a plausible factor, but Google does not specify a universal sensor-based rule. Remove the case or cover temporarily to compare behavior.
  • Lighting or placement differs. Detection can be affected by circumstances; there is no single documented test that should produce the same result on every model.
  • The option is not available on your build. An Android 15-compatible phone is not necessarily guaranteed to expose the feature.
  • Another power setting is involved. If timeout behavior changes unexpectedly, check Battery Saver and recent system updates before concluding Adaptive Timeout is malfunctioning. Google lists timeout and battery-saving controls separately.

For display behavior that does not match expectations, Google advises checking timeout settings and disabling Screen attention during troubleshooting. See Google’s display troubleshooting steps.

What to do if the setting is missing

  1. Confirm the phone is a Google Pixel; other Android manufacturers are not required to include this Pixel setting.
  2. Check for updates under Settings → System → Software updates, install any available update and restart.
  3. Reopen Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout and look for Adaptive Timeout.
  4. If it remains absent, use a fixed timeout as the reliable alternative. Do not sideload system components or change hidden settings just to force the option on.

Google’s Android 15 device information covers supported devices and its Pixel help page documents the menu; neither promises the option on every Android 15-compatible Pixel.

Should you use Adaptive Timeout?

It is a useful option if you often leave your phone unattended and want to reduce unnecessary display-on time without choosing an especially short fixed timeout. The size of any battery benefit depends on how you use the phone; Google does not provide a universal savings percentage.

Prefer a fixed timeout if you read without touching the screen, use the phone as a recipe display or dashboard, rely on predictable timing for accessibility or work, or find that the display turns off while you still need it. Adaptive Timeout is optional convenience, not a replacement for a setting that behaves consistently for your routine.
