A report published on August 15, 2024, previewed possible iPhone 17 upgrades before Apple had even announced the iPhone 16. In hindsight, the forecast was mixed: the iPhone 17 Pro arrived with a 48MP telephoto camera and is reported to have 12GB of RAM, but its front camera is 18MP—not the rumored 24MP. Its design changed substantially, while the Dynamic Island remained.
The claims came from analyst Jeff Pu, whose comments were reportedly contained in an investor note viewed by 9to5Mac. They were forecasts about a 2025 product, not Apple-confirmed specifications. BGR’s August 15, 2024 report also noted that Apple could change its plans before launch.
What the August 2024 iPhone 17 Pro leak claimed
The forecast covered the expected iPhone 17 family, but its most consequential claims concerned the Pro and Pro Max. It appeared roughly a year before those phones launched, so each item was speculative.
| Rumored feature | August 2024 claim | What was established after launch |
|---|---|---|
| Design | A refreshed iPhone 17 design, without much detail | The Pro received a substantial redesign, including an aluminum unibody and a prominent new rear camera platform. |
| Dynamic Island | A narrower island, particularly on the Pro Max | Apple’s published iPhone 17 Pro specifications still list Dynamic Island. The public specifications do not establish whether the rumored narrowing occurred. |
| Front camera | 24MP across the iPhone 17 lineup | The iPhone 17 Pro has an 18MP Center Stage front camera. |
| Pro telephoto | A 48MP periscope camera on both Pro models | The iPhone 17 Pro has a 48MP Telephoto camera. Apple’s official specifications use “Telephoto”; megapixel count alone does not establish a periscope optical design. |
| Pro memory | 12GB of RAM in the Pro models | Third-party specification reporting lists 12GB for the iPhone 17 Pro; Apple does not list RAM on its public specification page. |
| Non-Pro memory | 8GB in the standard iPhone 17 and rumored Slim | This was part of the analyst’s forecast. The cited Apple specifications do not confirm RAM amounts. |
| New model | A thinner “iPhone 17 Slim” might replace the Plus | The eventual product was named iPhone Air, not iPhone 17 Slim. |
The Dynamic Island claim should not be confused with a claim that Face ID would move fully under the display. A smaller opening could result from changes to the size or arrangement of components; the original report did not establish under-display Face ID.

Why the rumor mattered to iPhone 16 buyers
In August 2024, buyers choosing between an imminent iPhone 16 and waiting for an unannounced iPhone 17 Pro had to weigh a known phone against claims about a device still about a year away. The most compelling rumored reasons to wait were the higher-resolution Pro telephoto camera and additional memory. Neither was a guarantee of a better experience for every buyer: the camera’s image quality could not be judged from megapixels alone, and the memory claim did not guarantee particular future software features.
- Buying an iPhone 16 or 16 Pro made sense for someone who needed a phone, preferred a product already available, or did not need the rumored camera changes. The iPhone 16 Pro offered a 12MP telephoto and 12MP TrueDepth front camera, and used a titanium frame.
- Waiting made sense for someone willing to accept a year of uncertainty and interested in a new Pro camera system or a redesign. The final iPhone 17 Pro did bring a 48MP telephoto and a different design, but its front-camera resolution did not match the forecast.
The comparison matters by model: the leak’s Pro claims should be assessed against the iPhone 16 Pro, not treated as predictions about the standard iPhone 16. Apple’s comparison page covers the iPhone 17, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 Pro.

How the iPhone 17 Pro camera compared with the rumor
Telephoto: the strongest camera prediction
Apple lists the iPhone 17 Pro rear system as 48MP Main, 48MP Ultra Wide, and 48MP Telephoto. The iPhone 16 Pro comparison lists a 12MP telephoto alongside its 48MP Main and 48MP Ultra Wide cameras. The move to a 48MP telephoto was therefore a substantial and accurate direction in Pu’s forecast.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe rumor called the lens “periscope,” but Apple’s published specifications call it “Telephoto.” Those terms are not interchangeable: megapixel resolution describes image sampling, while periscope refers to an optical arrangement. Nor does a higher pixel count alone prove better photos in every situation; lens reach, sensor characteristics, stabilization, processing, and lighting all matter.
Front camera: 24MP became 18MP Center Stage
The iPhone 17 Pro launched with an 18MP Center Stage front camera, rather than the rumored 24MP camera. That makes the forecast wrong on resolution, even though it anticipated a front-camera change. Apple’s comparison lists a 12MP TrueDepth front camera for iPhone 16 Pro.

What changed in the final design
The vague prediction of a “refreshed design” proved directionally right, but it did not describe the most visible details. Apple specifies an aluminum unibody for iPhone 17 Pro, with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. The iPhone 16 Pro used titanium. The redesign also brought a more prominent rear camera platform, a practical reason to check that any case is made for the iPhone 17 Pro rather than assuming an iPhone 16 Pro case will fit.
The iPhone 17 Pro still has Dynamic Island. Apple’s published specifications do not settle whether its dimensions were narrowed as the 2024 report suggested, so the safest score is “unresolved,” not confirmed or definitively disproved. The rumor did not establish that Face ID would disappear beneath the display.
Apple lists the iPhone 17 Pro with a 6.3-inch OLED display, ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage, and dimensions of 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75mm at 206g. Its listed colors are Silver, Cosmic Orange, and Deep Blue. These are final product details, not specifications that the 2024 report supplied. See Apple’s technical specifications.

What 12GB of RAM does—and does not—tell you
Third-party specification reporting lists 12GB of RAM in iPhone 17 Pro, broadly validating the analyst’s claim. Apple’s own technical-specification page does not state the amount, so 12GB should not be presented as an Apple-confirmed figure.
More memory can provide headroom for multitasking and demanding on-device workloads, but it does not by itself determine which Apple Intelligence features a phone receives. Support and availability depend on the chip, software, region, and Apple’s product decisions. Apple confirms Apple Intelligence support for iPhone 17 Pro, but its cited specifications do not tie individual features to a particular RAM amount.
What happened to the rumored iPhone 17 Slim?
The 2024 report discussed a thin, less camera-focused model that could take the Plus model’s place, using “iPhone 17 Slim” as a rumor name. The eventual product was called iPhone Air. Apple’s current lineup comparison identifies iPhone Air as part of the iPhone 17 family; the earlier name was not official branding.

Was the leak right?
It was partly prescient, but not precise enough to treat as a reliable specification sheet. The 12GB RAM claim was broadly validated by third-party reporting, the 48MP telephoto prediction was accurate in substance, and the broad design-refresh call came true. The 24MP front-camera prediction did not: the launched Pro has an 18MP Center Stage camera. The narrower Dynamic Island claim remains unconfirmed by the cited public specifications, while the Slim model’s general direction became iPhone Air under a different name.
For someone making the decision in August 2024, the leak was a reason to consider waiting—not a sound basis for assuming the iPhone 17 Pro would have a particular feature. With hindsight, its clearest value was signaling the camera and memory direction; the final product details, rather than the old forecast, are what buyers should use to assess a phone now.
