Identify which one you have, confirm the exact model and layout, then diagnose whether the fault is a keycap, mechanism, electronics, battery, connection, or the Mac itself. A single universal replacement does not exist.
Choose the right replacement path

Identify the exact Mac or keyboard
Compatibility depends on more than a year. Record the MacBook Air or Pro model, screen size, approximate year, Intel or Apple silicon processor, keyboard layout, Touch Bar or function-row design, backlighting, Touch ID, and the A#### model identifier where possible.
- Open Apple menu > About This Mac and record the model name and year.
- Open detailed system information if the identifier is not shown.
- If the Mac will not boot, use its serial number or chassis markings.
- Match the identifier to Apple’s repair information or a part listing that explicitly names it.
- Confirm the language layout (US, UK/ISO, Japanese or another layout) before ordering a cap or assembly.
A search such as “2021 MacBook Pro keyboard” is not precise enough: one year can include multiple chassis, connectors and keyboard assemblies.
Diagnose before ordering parts
Built-in MacBook symptoms

Liquid damage is not an ordinary key replacement. Power down, disconnect power, do not use rice or a heat gun, do not spray liquid into the keyboard, and avoid repeatedly turning the Mac on.

External Magic Keyboard checks
- Charge it with the correct cable.
- Connect directly to the Mac by cable and check whether it is detected.
- Remove the old Bluetooth pairing and pair it again.
- Test it with another compatible device.
- Determine whether the fault is one key, the battery, wireless connection or the whole keyboard.
If it works over USB-C but not Bluetooth, the keys are not necessarily defective; pairing, radio or battery behavior may be the cause.
Option 1: Apple repair for a built-in keyboard
Apple’s Mac laptop repair route supports Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers and mail-in service. Apple provides a device-specific estimate, but inspection can change the final fee and the quote may cover a keyboard or top-case assembly rather than one key. Service options and parts availability vary by location. Start at Apple’s Mac laptop repair page.
- Apple says service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty/AppleCare term, whichever is longer, subject to its terms.
- Authorized Service Providers may set their own out-of-warranty fees; applicable AppleCare service fees are the same at Apple and providers.
- The standard warranty generally does not cover accidental damage such as spills. Consumer-law rights may provide additional protection.
- Check Apple Limited Warranty, AppleCare or AppleCare+, accidental-damage coverage and local consumer rights before authorizing work.
Apple states that an ineligible device may require payment of the full value of a replacement device. On an older MacBook, compare the estimate with used value, battery health, remaining software support and other pending repairs.
Option 2: DIY keycap or keyboard repair
Keycap-only replacement
This makes sense when the keyboard otherwise works and only the cap or hinge is damaged. Exact profiles and clips differ between generations and layouts. A broken scissor mechanism, membrane or mounting point can make a new cap useless or cause further damage.

iFixit lists model-specific MacBook and Magic Keyboard keycaps, assemblies and guides at https://www.ifixit.com/Parts/Mac/Keyboards. Several listed keycap products were approximately $17.99–$24.99, but prices and inventory change.
Scissor mechanism
Replace a scissor mechanism only when the exact part is confirmed, the membrane and mounting points are intact, and a guide covers your model. Magnification and suitable tools help; forcing a hinge can tear the membrane.
Complete keyboard or top case
Multiple dead keys, corrosion or a damaged internal circuit may require a complete keyboard assembly. Depending on the generation, the supported or practical repair may involve a larger top-case assembly. Do not assume every MacBook uses the same arrangement. iFixit listings included specified MacBook Pro and MacBook Air assemblies, with observed prices of approximately $29.99–$99.99; these are volatile product-page snapshots.

After any repair, test every key, backlight, trackpad, Touch ID and the power button before closing the machine completely.
Option 3: Replace an external Magic Keyboard
Apple’s current USB-C Magic Keyboard family is a like-for-like choice when you want Apple’s layout, shallow key feel, rechargeable battery and straightforward pairing. The cited US product pages showed these prices; recheck price and availability for your region:

Touch ID is tied to Apple’s hardware and software ecosystem. A keyboard that merely connects by Bluetooth or USB cannot be assumed to support it, especially on Intel Macs; verify the exact Mac and macOS requirements on Apple’s product page.

Low-profile scissor-style
Models such as Logitech MX Keys S for Mac, Logitech K-series Mac-layout keyboards and Keychron B6 Pro target quiet, laptop-like typing, Mac modifier legends and often a lower price or multi-device use. Check whether the model needs a USB receiver, vendor software or has different Bluetooth wake behavior.

Low-profile mechanical
NuPhy Air-series and Keychron low-profile K-series models, along with Logitech MX Mechanical Mini variants for Mac, suit users who want switch choice, more travel or programmability. They are generally taller and can be louder than Apple’s keyboard; Mac mode does not guarantee Apple spacing, legends or Touch ID.
These categories are alternatives, not independently tested rankings. Product availability, layout and software support vary. Secondary market coverage includes Tom’s Guide’s keyboard overview, but confirm specifications on the manufacturer’s current page.
Repair versus replacement: a practical decision
- Choose Apple repair for warranty or AppleCare claims, liquid damage, Touch ID problems, multiple-key failure, or a valuable Mac where professional records matter.
- Choose a DIY part when the exact model is confirmed, the fault is limited, a model-specific guide exists and the part cost is substantially below professional service.
- Choose an Apple external keyboard when you want Apple’s layout and Touch ID and accept the cited $149–$199 US price range.
- Choose third-party when you need a keypad, ergonomic design, mechanical switches, multi-device support or a lower-cost workaround and Touch ID is not essential.
- Replace the MacBook when the repair approaches its used value, parts are unavailable, or keyboard, battery, display and logic-board issues are accumulating.
Used and layout-specific buying checks
For a used Magic Keyboard, verify USB-C versus Lightning, Touch ID, keypad, language layout, battery condition, included cable, pairing behavior and the seller’s return policy. US, UK/ISO, Japanese and other layouts differ in return-key shape, shift size, legends and cap compatibility. A physically similar cap or keyboard may still be wrong.
The Bottom Line
Start with the exact model identifier and a diagnosis, not a generic “Mac keyboard” search. Repair a limited, clearly understood fault when the economics work; use Apple service for liquid, Touch ID or complex damage; and choose an external Apple or third-party keyboard when replacing the laptop keyboard is too risky or expensive.
