It also made Persona enrollment hands-free. Those were meaningful refinements, not proof that the avatars had become photorealistic. The update’s release notes still labeled Persona a beta feature, and the result can vary with the capture, the app and the person viewing it.
What visionOS 1.2 changed
Apple described visionOS 1.2 as improving the appearance of hair and makeup, the representation of the neck and mouth, and eye rendering in EyeSight. It also added hands-free Persona enrollment. These are four related changes, but they do different jobs: three concern appearance, while the fourth makes setup easier. Apple’s release notes, reproduced in MacRumors’ June 10, 2024 release report, did not claim that the update made Personas indistinguishable from real people.
- Hair and makeup: A refinement to how the face and hair are rendered. It could make the avatar look more convincing, but does not guarantee consistent results across hairstyles, lighting or capture conditions.
- Neck and mouth: Apple specifically called out both areas. A more natural mouth and a better transition from head to neck matter because those features are prominent when an avatar speaks or appears at life size.
- EyeSight: The outward-facing display on Vision Pro shows an approximation of the wearer’s eyes to people nearby. Apple listed improved eye rendering for EyeSight separately; that should not be confused with how the wearer’s Persona appears to someone in a call.
- Hands-free enrollment: Users could capture a Persona without holding the headset in a particular way. This is a setup convenience, not an image-quality improvement by itself.
visionOS 1.2 was the second major visionOS update after Vision Pro’s launch, and Persona remained labeled beta in the release notes. That context makes “refinement” a more accurate description than “finally realistic.”
Persona and Spatial Persona are not the same thing
A Persona is a digital representation of a Vision Pro wearer, generated from a face-capture process and animated to convey facial expressions and hand movements. Apple introduced it for FaceTime and also announced Persona support in Zoom, Cisco Webex and Microsoft Teams. Apple’s description of a Persona as an “authentic spatial representation” is product language, not independent evidence of photorealism. See Apple’s Vision Pro launch announcement.

A Spatial Persona is that representation placed into a shared spatial scene, rather than shown only as a conventional call tile. In a supported FaceTime call, Vision Pro participants can appear life-size in one another’s environments, move around the space and use SharePlay together. Apple says Spatial Personas can be repositioned by looking at one and pinching and dragging; it supports up to five participants. The Apple Support guide to spatial Persona describes the controls and behavior.
| Feature | What the participant sees | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Persona | A rendered representation of the wearer in a video call; it may appear as a conventional 2D call view. | FaceTime and supported third-party conferencing apps. |
| Spatial Persona | A life-size representation integrated into a shared spatial scene, with spatial placement and audio. | FaceTime collaboration and SharePlay activities among Vision Pro participants. |
Support for Persona in a conferencing app does not by itself mean that the app offers the full Spatial Persona experience. An independent study examining FaceTime, Cisco Webex, Microsoft Teams and Zoom found that only FaceTime provided the full immersive Spatial Persona experience among those services at the time tested; the others used 2D Personas. The finding is specific to the study’s tested versions and conditions, not a guarantee about every later app release. See A First Look at Immersive Telepresence on Apple Vision Pro.
Why the visual refinements mattered
Early Personas drew criticism for details such as artificial-looking hair, unnatural mouths, weak transitions at the neck and eyes that could seem flat. These are especially noticeable in a Spatial Persona scene: a life-size face that appears to share a room invites closer scrutiny than a small video tile. Apple introduced Persona as a beta, and the specific changes in visionOS 1.2 addressed several features people look at while listening and speaking.

Still, a list of rendering improvements is not the same as a measured result across users. Apple’s release notes establish what it said it improved; they do not establish that every Persona looks better to every observer, or that expressions, gaze, lighting and motion are all convincing.

What Spatial Personas let people do
The point of the spatial version is more than making a call tile larger. Apple describes Personas changing position to suit an activity—for example, sitting beside someone watching a film or across from them during a game—and moving with the associated app window. Spatial Audio helps make each person’s voice seem to come from their apparent location. SharePlay can put participants together around shared media or an activity. Apple outlined these collaboration features in its June 2024 Vision Pro availability announcement.
- Watch a film together through SharePlay.
- Play a game around a virtual table.
- Work on a shared task while appearing in the same spatial scene.
- Move or reposition participants when their default placement is inconvenient.
Spatial Personas are not an unlimited virtual meeting room: Apple’s support guide sets a limit of five participants. People joining from iPhone, iPad or Mac appear as tiles rather than Spatial Personas, according to Apple’s launch announcement. The full shared-space effect therefore depends on compatible Vision Pro participants.

How to update and try it
visionOS 1.2 is a historical release from June 2024. Current Vision Pro owners may be using a later version with different controls or capabilities; use the current software offered for your device rather than treating 1.2 as a current update target.
Install visionOS 1.2 (historical instructions)
- Open Settings.
- Select General, then Software Update.
- Follow the installation prompts. When asked, remove Vision Pro; installation progress appears through the front EyeSight display.
These steps are from the June 10, 2024 release report; labels and prompts may differ in later visionOS versions.
Capture or refresh a Persona
Open the Persona setup or capture workflow from Vision Pro settings or the relevant FaceTime or Persona controls, then follow the on-screen capture directions. Use the hands-free enrollment option if it is offered on your installed version. Menu wording can change, so follow the controls shown by the device rather than relying on a path for a different release.

Start a Spatial Persona call
- Start a FaceTime call with another Vision Pro user.
- Look for the Spatial control in the call interface or Control Center. Spatial Personas are enabled by default in a FaceTime call when at least one other participant has Vision Pro, according to Apple Support.
- If the spatial scene is not active, turn Spatial on. To move a participant, look at that Persona, then pinch and drag.
- To return to conventional call tiles, turn Spatial Persona off in Control Center.
How to judge whether a Persona looks realistic
“Realistic” is not a single pass-or-fail test. A Persona can resemble its owner but still look unnatural while speaking, or show convincing expressions while the eyes or hair remain distracting. Judge the parts separately:
- Identity: Does the face look like the person who enrolled?
- Expression and speech: Do smiles, blinks and eyebrow movement feel natural? Does the mouth track speech plausibly?
- Eyes: Do they appear lively and correctly oriented?
- Hair and facial detail: Do edges and texture remain credible?
- Neck and shoulders: Does the head connect naturally to the visible body?
- Motion and presence: Does the representation remain convincing as the wearer turns or gestures, and does it feel like another person in the space?
Apple’s 1.2 notes address hair and makeup, neck and mouth, and EyeSight eyes. They do not establish photorealism across every item on this list, particularly under different lighting or during movement.

Choose based on whether spatial immersion or workplace compatibility matters more. Apple announced Persona support for FaceTime, Zoom, Webex and Teams, but the independent study’s comparison found the full Spatial Persona experience only in FaceTime among the four tested services at the time. That distinction matters more than the broad label “Persona support.”

If your Persona looks wrong
Appearance can depend on capture conditions and on changes in the wearer’s appearance. If the result is distracting, try these checks in order:
Quick Recap
- Re-capture in bright, even lighting rather than a dim or unevenly lit room.
- Move hair away from the face and remove accessories that obscure it during capture, such as glasses, hats or masks, if practical.
- Check that Vision Pro is fitted correctly and follow the capture prompts closely.
- Re-enroll after a significant change in hair, facial hair or other appearance details.
- Compare a FaceTime call with a supported third-party app. If the issue appears only in one, the app’s rendering may be a factor rather than the capture alone.
- If Spatial Persona placement or the scene is the problem, turn it off and back on in Control Center; confirm other participants are using Vision Pro if you expect them to appear spatially.
- On a current device, install the latest compatible visionOS offered for it; controls and results may differ from those in the 2024 version.
