Important for current readers: iOS 17.1.1 was released on November 7, 2023. It was a minor bug-fix update with two confirmed changes: it addressed an Apple Pay and NFC failure that could affect iPhone 15 models after wireless charging in certain cars, and corrected snow information in the Weather Lock Screen widget. In 2026, do not search for this obsolete build; open Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest compatible iOS version Apple offers.
What iOS 17.1.1 actually fixed
Apple’s release notes list only two fixes for iOS 17.1.1. The update was not a broad repair for every complaint associated with iOS 17, nor was it a feature release like iOS 17.1.
Apple Pay and NFC after in-car wireless charging
On iPhone 15 models, Apple Pay and other NFC features could become unavailable in rare circumstances after the phone was placed on a wireless charger in certain cars. NFC is the short-range technology used for contactless payments, some digital keys and other tap-to-use functions.
Contemporary reports associated the problem especially with some BMW vehicles, but Apple’s own wording was broader: “certain cars.” That does not establish that every BMW model, or every in-car charging pad, was affected. The official fix concerns NFC availability after this particular charging scenario—not wireless charging generally, every Apple Pay failure, or all CarPlay problems. Apple’s release notes are available at Apple’s About iOS 17 Updates page; the BMW connection was reported by MacRumors and 9to5Mac.

- Check your phone model: Before you order, please confirm your phone model to find out which product is right for you
Snow displayed incorrectly in the Weather Lock Screen widget
The second fix corrected a display problem in which the Weather widget on the Lock Screen might not show snow accurately. This was a visual or data-display issue in that widget, not a documented failure of the entire Weather app, forecasting service, location services or every Lock Screen widget.
What iOS 17.1.1 did not promise to fix
Apple listed two narrowly defined fixes. Reports of Wi-Fi trouble, unexpected shutdowns, keyboard lag, battery drain, general charging failures and other iOS 17 symptoms should not be presented as confirmed iOS 17.1.1 fixes. Contemporary coverage discussed some of those complaints, but Apple did not include them in the release notes; see Macworld’s release context.

Likewise, “fixes BMW charging problems,” “fixes wireless charging” and “fixes the Weather app” are all too broad. The documented scope was NFC availability on iPhone 15 models after wireless charging in certain cars, plus the snow condition shown by the Weather Lock Screen widget.
Who needed the update most?

| Using beta software or a managed iPhone | Update availability and behavior can differ from the public release. |

- Back up the iPhone to iCloud or to a computer.
- Connect it to power, or make sure the battery is sufficiently charged.
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.

If the update does not appear or fails
No update is listed
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update while connected to Wi-Fi.
- Check available storage and restart the iPhone.
- If the phone is already on a later release, iOS 17.1.1 should not be expected to appear.
- An organization-managed device may have update restrictions.
Installation will not complete
- Confirm that a backup exists and free storage if necessary.
- Connect the phone to power, restart it and retry.
- If over-the-air installation repeatedly fails, use Apple’s official update process on a Mac or Windows PC.
- Do not download an old firmware file from an untrusted website; contact Apple Support if the official methods fail.

- Compatibility & Professional Support: Only compatible for iPhone 16 Phones. We have enough confidence to provide you with quality products and services. Any concerns or questions about iPhone 16 Phone Case, please feel free to contact us
- Restart the iPhone.
- Test Apple Pay or another NFC function away from the vehicle’s charging pad.
- Check that your Apple Pay cards are still present and usable, and try a different payment terminal or NFC function.
- Install the latest compatible iOS update. If the failure continues, contact Apple Support; if it occurs only with the car’s pad, contact the vehicle manufacturer as well.
A phone that still will not charge or use NFC after updating may have a vehicle-compatibility, hardware, configuration or separate software problem. The 17.1.1 note does not establish that all such failures were fixed.

Was iOS 17.1.1 a security update?
Apple’s published description for iOS 17.1.1 focused on bug fixes. Apple separately identified iOS 17.1.2 as containing important security fixes on its iOS 17 update page. For security details, consult Apple’s security-content archive rather than assuming that every minor version has the same security scope.

The practical answer in 2026
iOS 17.1.1 mattered most to an iPhone 15 owner whose car charger triggered an NFC failure, or to someone whose Lock Screen Weather widget displayed snow incorrectly. For everyone else, it was a small maintenance release. Because it dates from November 7, 2023, the safe and useful instruction now is to install the latest compatible iOS version offered under Settings > General > Software Update, not to hunt for 17.1.1 specifically.
