Don’t click its link, reply, call a number in it, or enter information. Check your account by opening the Netflix app yourself or typing Netflix’s address into your browser.
There is one important distinction: Netflix can send a sign-in link or code after you request one. An unsolicited promotion or payment demand is not the same thing. Netflix says requested sign-in links and codes expire after 15 minutes.

What a Netflix scam text can look like
There is no single script. Scammers change the wording and may impersonate Netflix with a free offer, a billing warning, or an account-security claim. Examples include:
- “You’ve been selected for a free Netflix subscription.”
- “Get Netflix free for one year.”
- “Your payment failed—verify your account now.”
- “Your account will be canceled unless you update billing.”
- “Claim your Netflix gift or reward.”
- “Your account has been suspended. Confirm your identity to keep watching.”
A free offer appeals to curiosity; a cancellation threat creates urgency. Either can lead to a fake sign-in or payment page designed to collect credentials or financial details. The FTC has documented Netflix-themed phishing messages that falsely claimed there was a billing problem and asked recipients to update payment information. The FTC’s Netflix phishing alert explains that such messages can lead to spoofed sites that steal information.

How to recognize a suspicious text
- You weren’t expecting it. You did not request a sign-in code, link, or account action.
- It offers something unusually generous. A free subscription, gift, prize, or large discount is a reason to verify independently, not a reason to tap.
- It pressures you to act now. Threats of immediate cancellation, suspension, or a countdown are designed to rush a decision.
- It asks for sensitive information. Be wary of requests for a password, full card number, bank details, Social Security number, or verification code.
- It directs you to a link, number, or payment route in the message. A shortened, misspelled, or unfamiliar web address is suspicious, but even a convincing-looking address does not prove a message is genuine.
- It asks you to reply or install something. A reply can confirm your number is active; an app, profile, extension, or remote-access tool could expose your device or accounts.
- The sender or presentation looks convincing. A Netflix logo, familiar sender name, apparent phone number, or place in an existing message thread is not proof of authenticity.
Not having a Netflix account makes a Netflix-branded text especially suspicious, but scammers may send messages in bulk without knowing whether a recipient subscribes. Fake billing notices are a broader phishing tactic: the FTC advises people to verify unexpected account or payment claims using contact details they find independently. See the FTC’s guidance on recognizing and reporting spam texts.
How to check your Netflix account safely
- Ignore the message’s instructions. Don’t use its link, phone number, or reply request.
- Open Netflix independently. Launch the app you already use or type Netflix’s known web address into your browser.
- Check your account there. Review your account and billing status inside the service. If you need help, navigate to Netflix’s Help Center independently rather than following a contact link in the text.
This method works whether the message claims you won something or says your payment failed. Checking the address itself is not a reliable substitute: links can redirect through other sites, and a familiar-looking page can still be fake.

What to do with the text
- Don’t click, reply, or call. If useful, take a screenshot without opening the link.
- Forward it to 7726. That number spells “SPAM”; forwarding availability can depend on your carrier.
- Report it in your messaging app. Use the built-in “Report Junk,” “Report Spam,” or equivalent option if available.
- Forward it to Netflix. Netflix accepts suspicious messages at [email protected]. Its guidance says not to answer or follow suspicious messages that ask for passwords, payment information, or other personal details: Netflix’s guidance on suspicious emails and texts.
- Delete and block it. After reporting, remove the message and block the sender if your phone offers that option.
- Report fraud to the FTC. U.S. consumers can report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Reporting matters beyond one message: the FTC says consumers reported $470 million in losses from scams that began with text messages in 2024. That is a reported total across text-message scams, not a Netflix-specific figure. The FTC’s April 2025 data release discusses the broader losses and reporting options.
If you clicked the link but entered nothing
Close the page. A click alone does not establish that your account was compromised, but take extra care if the page downloaded anything or your device started behaving unusually.

- Update your device and security software. If anything downloaded or the device behaves unusually, run a security scan.
- Watch for unexpected password-reset messages, follow-up texts or emails, and unfamiliar activity on your accounts.
If you gave the site your Netflix password
- Change it on Netflix. Go to Netflix directly, not through the text, and set a new, strong password.
- Change it anywhere else you reused it. Prioritize your email account, since it may be used to reset other passwords. The FTC also recommends changing reused passwords after a scam: what to do if you were scammed.
- Review your Netflix account. Look for unfamiliar profiles, devices, contact details, or payment information, and sign out of unfamiliar devices if appropriate.
- Watch for further account activity. Pay attention to password-reset attempts and other changes you did not make.
If you gave payment or bank details
Contact the card issuer or bank promptly using the number on your card or its official app or website. Explain that your information was exposed through a phishing message and ask whether to replace the card, secure the account, or take other protective steps. Review transactions and dispute unauthorized charges. If you supplied bank credentials, ask the bank what additional safeguards it recommends.
If you also gave a Social Security number, use IdentityTheft.gov for U.S. identity-theft recovery guidance. Report the incident to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC advises contacting the relevant financial institution and reporting fraudulent charges; reimbursement or reversal is not guaranteed.

If you paid the scammer
Contact the service or institution involved as soon as possible. Whether a payment can be stopped or recovered depends on the method and circumstances.
- Credit or debit card: Contact the issuer, report the charge, and ask about disputing it or replacing the card.
- Bank transfer: Call your bank promptly and report the transfer; ask whether it can be stopped or reversed.
- Money-transfer app: Report the transaction to the app provider and ask about reversal. Also contact the linked bank or card issuer.
- Gift card: Contact the issuer and keep the card and receipt.
- Wire transfer: Contact the wire service immediately and request a reversal.
- Cryptocurrency: Contact the service used to send it. Recovery can be difficult, and cryptocurrency transfers are often irreversible.
The FTC’s scam-recovery guidance provides further steps by payment type.

When a Netflix text may be legitimate
Netflix documents sign-in links and one-time codes delivered by text after a user requests them during sign-in or signup. If you just initiated that action, use a code only in the official Netflix app or a website you opened yourself. Netflix says those sign-in links and codes generally expire after 15 minutes: Netflix’s sign-in and signup code guidance.
That exception does not authenticate an unexpected free offer, billing demand, or request to send a password or payment information. If you did not request a code or sign-in link, do not use it; verify your account through Netflix independently.
