Short answer: The base iPhone 16 stores far less energy than the Galaxy S25 Ultra, Pixel 9 Pro XL and OnePlus 13, yet it remains competitive in controlled browsing because its smaller display, A18 chip and tightly integrated iOS hardware use the available battery efficiently. In Tom’s Guide’s cellular web test, the OnePlus 13 lasted longest at 19 hours 45 minutes, followed by the Galaxy S25 Ultra at 17:14, Pixel 9 Pro XL at 12:54 and iPhone 16 at 12:43.
That ranking measures endurance in one workload, not universal efficiency or instantaneous energy draw. The comparison also mixes a compact 6.1-inch-class iPhone with much larger Android phones, so it answers a capacity-efficiency question rather than a perfectly matched size or price comparison.

Energy draw is not the same as battery capacity
mAh measures electrical charge stored by a battery at a stated voltage. It does not tell you how quickly the phone consumes that charge. Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy and are more useful when battery voltages differ. Power draw, measured in watts, is the instantaneous rate of consumption. Gaming, high-brightness HDR, 5G uploading, navigation and camera recording can all raise it.

Runtime is the result of stored energy divided by the phone’s average demand during a particular test. A 6,000-mAh phone can last longer simply because it stores more energy, even if it draws more watts during some tasks. OnePlus is unusual here because it publishes both 22.92 Wh typical and 22.31 Wh rated energy for the OnePlus 13. The other capacity figures should not be treated as directly comparable Wh measurements without their rated voltage.
How much smaller is the iPhone 16 battery?
Using the published figures, the iPhone 16’s 3,561 mAh capacity is approximately 29% below the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s 5,000 mAh, 30% below the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s 5,060 mAh typical capacity and 41% below the OnePlus 13’s 6,000 mAh typical capacity. Those percentages describe storage capacity only; they do not mean the iPhone consumes 29% or 41% less energy.
Apple’s EU specification page also provides a standardized endurance label of 37 hours per cycle. That regulatory figure is useful context, but it is not interchangeable with Tom’s Guide’s continuous cellular-browsing result.

What the iPhone 16 test result means
Tom’s Guide ran continuous web surfing over cellular at 150 nits, using default display settings for the main comparison and timing until the battery reached zero. The base iPhone 16 lasted 12 hours 43 minutes. That supports an all-day expectation for ordinary mixed use, but “all day” is not a standardized promise: weak signal, outdoor brightness, gaming, navigation, camera use and background activity can reduce it substantially.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The result reflects more than the A18 processor. The iPhone 16 has a smaller display than the Android Ultra models, and Apple controls the chip, operating system, display behavior, modem integration and power management. Those design choices can reduce demand in this workload, but Apple does not publish a complete consumer table of average watts for everyday tasks; calling the phone universally more efficient would go beyond the available measurements. Apple’s battery-life testing notes are at Apple Support.

| Model | Published capacity | Tom’s Guide result |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16 | 3,561 mAh | 12:43 |
| iPhone 16 Pro | 3,582 mAh | 14:07 |
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | 4,685 mAh | 17:35 |
The iPhone 16 Pro Max is the fairer physical-size and premium-price rival to the Galaxy S25 Ultra and OnePlus 13. Comparing those large phones with the compact base iPhone 16 is useful for showing how much endurance Apple obtains from a smaller battery, but it is not a like-for-like screen-size comparison.
Galaxy S25 Ultra: strong endurance without the biggest battery
The Galaxy S25 Ultra combines a 5,000-mAh battery with a 17-hour-14-minute result in Tom’s Guide’s cellular web test. It therefore outlasted the base iPhone 16 by 4 hours 31 minutes under that methodology. Samsung specifies 45W wired charging and up to 65% in about 30 minutes with a suitable 45W adapter.
Recommended Free Tools
The S25 Ultra’s larger, high-resolution display, adaptive refresh behavior, modem conditions and premium Snapdragon platform all affect consumption. Its longer runtime demonstrates greater endurance in the test, not a measured advantage in watts per task or per watt-hour. It is the sensible large-phone compromise for buyers who want Samsung software, an S Pen and a broad camera and productivity feature set without choosing the fastest-charging device.

OnePlus 13: endurance and charging leader in this comparison
The OnePlus 13 posted 19 hours 45 minutes, the longest result among the compared phones. Its 6,000-mAh typical battery and published 22.92 Wh typical energy give it a substantial reserve, while the LTPO display can vary from 1 to 120Hz.
Charging claims require careful reading. The U.S. specification page lists 80W SUPERVOOC, up to 100W with the specified OnePlus SUPERVOOC 100W Dual Ports Power Adapter, and 50W wireless charging. The headline 100W rate is therefore adapter-dependent, and a generic USB-C charger may not reproduce it. OnePlus also notes that actual performance varies with software, environment, usage and product differences.
For buyers who value both long sessions and short top-ups, this is the strongest option in the cited testing. Its advantage comes from the combination of a large energy store and the phone’s power-management system; the runtime result alone cannot prove lower per-task power draw than an iPhone.

Pixel 9 Pro XL: capacity is not a guarantee of runtime
Google lists a 5,060-mAh typical battery (4,942 mAh minimum), 24-plus-hour battery claims and up to 70% charging in about 30 minutes with Google’s 45W charger. In the cited cellular test, however, it reached 12:54—only 11 minutes longer than the iPhone 16 despite having roughly 42% more listed capacity.
This near tie does not show identical power consumption. The phones differ in display size and resolution, refresh behavior, modem and thermal characteristics, software and test implementation. It does show why capacity alone cannot predict endurance. Pixel’s battery-saver modes and Google ecosystem may still make it the right choice for some users, but the cited test does not support buying it solely for battery life.
How fair is the ranking?
Tom’s Guide’s 150-nit cellular-browsing procedure is a useful controlled comparison, not a wall-power measurement. Results can change with:
- Weak 5G or LTE signal, which makes the modem work harder than strong Wi-Fi.
- Outdoor brightness, where large high-luminance displays can consume substantially more power than at 150 nits.
- Adaptive 120Hz versus fixed 60Hz settings; Tom’s Guide found meaningful changes when refresh behavior was altered.
- Gaming, sustained GPU loads and thermal limits.
- 4K or HDR recording, stabilization, computational photography and video encoding.
- Software versions, battery health, ambient temperature and background synchronization.
Accordingly, the ranking applies to the stated cellular web workload. It should not be generalized to standby, Wi-Fi streaming, gaming or continuous video recording.
Which phone should you buy?
Choose the iPhone 16 for compact efficiency
- You want a smaller flagship and Apple’s ecosystem.
- You value strong test endurance relative to battery capacity.
- Your use is mixed rather than dominated by gaming, hotspot use or long camera sessions.
- You can accept slower charging than the OnePlus 13 and do not need a 120Hz adaptive display.
Choose the Galaxy S25 Ultra for a balanced large Android flagship
- You want the S Pen, Samsung software and a premium camera system.
- You prefer stronger tested endurance than the base iPhone 16.
- You accept 45W charging and a large handset.
Choose the OnePlus 13 for maximum runtime and rapid charging
- Battery longevity and quick recovery are your top priorities.
- You are comfortable with the SUPERVOOC charger ecosystem.
- You want 50W wireless charging and the largest battery here.
- You understand that maximum 100W wired charging requires the specified adapter.
Choose the Pixel 9 Pro XL for Google’s platform
- You prioritize Pixel software, camera processing and Google services.
- You want a large screen and battery-saver features.
- You accept that its larger battery did not produce a commanding lead in the cited independent test.
Bottom line
The iPhone 16 does not use a large battery; it uses a small one effectively in the cited browsing test. The OnePlus 13 is the endurance and charging winner among these phones, the Galaxy S25 Ultra is the strongest mainstream large-phone compromise, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL demonstrates that extra capacity alone cannot guarantee longer runtime. Choose by workload, size, charging habits and ecosystem—not by mAh printed on the specification sheet.
