Its 1-inch main camera and improved low-light obstacle sensing are meaningful upgrades over the Air 3. But it is larger and heavier than a Mini, and for routine daylight flying the Air 3 may deliver better value. Choose the Air 3S for its low-light and camera advantages—not because its sensors make night flying risk-free.
Who should buy the DJI Air 3S?
The Air 3S makes the most sense for photographers and video creators who want two useful camera perspectives, strong flight endurance, and a better main camera for challenging light without moving to DJI’s flagship Mavic class. Its 3x telephoto camera adds compositional options that a single-camera drone cannot match.
- Buy the Air 3S if you regularly shoot at sunrise or sunset, value the 1-inch primary camera, want a 3x telephoto view, and are comfortable carrying a roughly 724 g aircraft.
- Choose the Air 3 if most of your work is in daylight and it is substantially cheaper. The Air 3S’s biggest advantages matter less when light is plentiful.
- Choose a Mini-class drone if low weight and a smaller travel kit matter more than the Air 3S’s dual-camera flexibility and larger platform.
- Consider Autel’s EVO Lite+ only if adjustable aperture is a priority and current regional availability, app and firmware support, and service are confirmed.
“Go-to” here means a strong balance of image quality, camera flexibility, endurance, and capability—not the smallest, cheapest, or universally best drone.
What changed from the DJI Air 3?
The Air 3S is not just a cosmetic refresh. Its key changes are concentrated in the main camera and low-light sensing. DJI lists a 1-inch, 50 MP primary camera, a 48 MP 3x telephoto camera, forward-facing LiDAR, O4 transmission, and up to 45 minutes of flight time. The 45-minute figure is DJI’s maximum under controlled test conditions, not a promise of usable mission time. See DJI’s Air 3S product page and official specifications and support details.

| Area | Air 3S | What it means for an Air 3 owner |
|---|---|---|
| Main camera | 1-inch CMOS, 50 MP, 24 mm-equivalent wide lens | The most consequential upgrade for low-light and high-contrast primary-camera work. |
| Telephoto | 48 MP camera with a 3x optical perspective | Retains the dual-camera approach; useful for compressed landscapes and framing from farther away. |
| Low-light sensing | Forward-facing LiDAR, downward infrared time-of-flight sensor, and six vision sensors | Improves obstacle-sensing capability in some low-light situations, but does not guarantee avoidance. |
| Flight time | Up to 45 minutes in DJI’s controlled test | A stated maximum, not a typical flight duration or safe battery target. |
| Weight and portability | Approximately 724 g | Still a substantial travel drone; it does not inherit the light carry and regulatory profile of a sub-250 g model. |
| Transmission | O4; DJI advertises up to 20 km under applicable test and regulatory conditions | The maximum is not a practical or lawful distance target for every location. |
DJI says the primary camera can record up to 14 stops of dynamic range in specified video conditions. That figure does not apply to every mode or file. Normal-color video can be set as high as ISO 12,800, while D-Log M and HLG have a stated maximum of ISO 3,200; these are setting limits, not guarantees of clean footage at those values. DJI’s specifications detail the mode-specific limits.
How good are the cameras?
Daylight video
The main camera’s 4K/60 HDR capability, stabilization, and 10-bit color options make the Air 3S a versatile daylight video tool. DJI also lists 4K/120 in Slow Motion mode; that is not the same as a general-purpose 4K/120 recording mode with every ordinary capture option. The 3x camera offers a distinct perspective without relying on digital cropping.
For a two-camera shoot, check exposure and color continuity when switching lenses rather than assuming the cameras are interchangeable. Fine foliage, moving leaves and water, bright skies, shadows, and flare can all challenge small aerial cameras. TechRadar’s review describes testing in sunny, cloudy, windy, and low-light conditions, while TechGearLab reports strong 4K video and effective tracking in its testing; those are independent review findings, not a guarantee of identical results in every scene. Read TechRadar’s review and TechGearLab’s test.
Low-light video
The 1-inch main sensor is the Air 3S’s clearest imaging advantage over the Air 3: it can collect more useful light than the Air 3’s main camera. That helps in dim scenes, but does not remove noise, motion blur, or lost detail. Exposure still depends on shutter speed, movement, available light, and the chosen ISO. The telephoto camera is a separate compromise: its smaller sensor does not receive the same low-light benefit as the primary camera.

Digital Camera World found the Air 3S particularly strong for low-light work in its review. Treat that as an assessment of the camera’s relative capability, not a claim that night footage will be noise-free. Read the review.
Still photography and telephoto composition
The Air 3S provides 50 MP files from the main camera and 48 MP from the telephoto camera. High resolution gives more room to crop, but the megapixel count alone does not determine detail: lens performance, aircraft movement, shutter speed, haze, and processing matter. A moving subject may also complicate multi-shot or computational capture modes.

The telephoto camera is useful beyond its nominal 3x view. Its narrower perspective can make distant layers in a landscape appear closer together, help isolate a building or subject, and let you frame without flying as near. That can improve composition and reduce the need to position the aircraft close to a subject, though it does not replace safe-distance planning or permission to fly.
HDR, profiles, panoramas, and vertical work
Air 3S supports D-Log M and HLG workflows, which can give editors more latitude when exposure and post-production are handled deliberately. The 14-stop claim is specific to DJI’s stated video conditions, not a universal promise for stills, vertical capture, slow motion, or every profile. DJI lists Free Panorama support for both cameras.
If vertical social video is your main output, consider the framing and editing workflow before buying. The Air 3S is a relatively large, landscape-oriented camera drone; the available information does not establish native vertical capture as a reason to choose it over a more social-first option.
Flight, controls, and battery expectations
DJI’s advertised flight maximum is up to 45 minutes in controlled conditions. Wind, cold, flight speed, repeated acceleration, battery condition, and camera use can change actual endurance. Keep a reserve to return and land; do not plan a flight around using the battery to zero. Because no independent battery test figure is established here, a precise typical duration would be misleading.
O4 is DJI’s current transmission system for the Air 3S, and DJI advertises up to 20 km under applicable controlled and regional conditions. That is a maximum specification, not a distance to target: local rules, interference, terrain, line of sight, and safe control of the aircraft constrain real flights.
The aircraft uses DJI Fly and must be activated through the app. Before flying, update firmware and check release notes: DJI has documented changes affecting QuickTransfer and obstacle avoidance in urban night scenes. Record the aircraft, controller, and app versions when comparing behavior over time. DJI Air 3S release notes.

This is in addition to the following features that extend the abilities of the Air 3S and the amazing results it can achieve.
Obstacle sensing: helpful, not collision-proof
The Air 3S combines forward-facing LiDAR with a downward infrared time-of-flight sensor and six vision sensors. DJI says the system supports nightscape omnidirectional sensing and improved Smart Return to Home. It specifies a forward LiDAR range of 0.5–25 m at night under stated reflectivity conditions. Range is not a promise that every obstacle in that zone will be detected.
Thin wires and branches, glass, featureless surfaces, moving objects, and obstacles outside sensor coverage can defeat or confuse sensing. Results depend on lighting, surface texture and reflectivity, speed, and settings. Vision-based functions can also be impaired in low light. Read the Air 3S user manual and fly with a clear route, conservative speed, and attention to the aircraft. LiDAR improves a toolset; it does not make the aircraft autonomous or collision-proof.
Night capability is not permission to fly anywhere
Better low-light sensing and a larger camera sensor address different problems: one concerns obstacle awareness, the other image capture. Neither removes airspace restrictions, privacy obligations, land-use rules, or local limits on night operations. Check the rules for the exact location and operation before launch.
In the United States, recreational flyers must register drones weighing 250 g or more, pass the free TRUST test, follow airspace rules, and comply with Remote ID unless an applicable exception applies. The Air 3S exceeds the 250 g threshold. Confirm current requirements with the FAA recreational flyer guidance, FAA registration information, and FAA Remote ID guidance. Non-recreational U.S. operations may fall under Part 107; see the FAA’s Part 107 overview. Requirements differ outside the United States.

Air 3S versus the alternatives
DJI Air 3: better value for daylight
The Air 3 preserves the appeal of two cameras and is the more sensible choice when the price gap is large and low-light work is uncommon. Its main camera lacks the Air 3S’s 1-inch sensor, and it does not have the Air 3S’s forward-facing LiDAR low-light system. Existing Air 3 owners need a recurring low-light need—not just a new model number—to justify replacing a capable daytime drone. See TechRadar’s Air 3S versus Air 3 comparison and DJI’s Air 3 announcement.

Mini-class drones: better for travel weight
A Mini-class model is the category to examine if you hike, travel with limited luggage, or prioritize a lighter aircraft and simpler carry. The trade-off is that portability, wind confidence, endurance, and camera options vary by model; the available information does not establish a current Mini model’s price or stock, so compare a specific model before buying.
Autel EVO Lite+: an adjustable-aperture niche
Autel’s EVO Lite series is relevant if adjustable aperture is a defining requirement. Its official product information emphasizes that feature, but availability and ongoing consumer support should be checked locally before treating it as a dependable long-term purchase. See Autel’s EVO Lite series page and TechRadar’s drone guide.
Before your first flight
- Activate: set up the aircraft in DJI Fly and complete activation before relying on it in the field.
- Update and inspect: check aircraft, controller, app, and battery firmware; inspect propellers, battery fit, and the intended route.
- Check local requirements: verify registration, Remote ID, pilot qualification, airspace, night rules, privacy requirements, and any site-specific restrictions for your location.
- Plan power and return: account for wind, temperature, distance, and a safe landing reserve; do not use the advertised maximum flight time as a mission plan.
- Plan transport and costs: allow for the aircraft’s size, batteries, controller, charging equipment, filters, and any required registration or coverage.
Final verdict
The Air 3S is a compelling all-round choice for serious aerial imaging when its larger main sensor, telephoto flexibility, and improved low-light sensing will be used often. It is an especially persuasive step up for Air 3 hopefuls who shoot in dim or high-contrast conditions. For daylight-first pilots, a discounted Air 3 is the value play; for weight-conscious travel, start with a Mini-class model instead.
