Spotify Car Thing is no longer operational. Spotify remotely disabled every unit on December 9, 2024, after ending production and sales in 2022. The company told owners to contact support about refund options by January 14, 2025; that stated window has now passed. Owners should treat Car Thing as discontinued, unsupported hardware, reset it, and recycle it rather than sell it as a working Spotify device.
The important lesson is not that Spotify ended an unsuccessful experiment. It is that customers paid for a physical product and received no durable ownership path after the service behind it was withdrawn. Google also shut down Stadia, but its refunds, advance notice and controller-conversion tool offered a much better off-ramp.
What Car Thing was supposed to do
Car Thing was a dedicated in-car Spotify controller for vehicles without modern infotainment systems. It used a small display, physical controls and “Hey Spotify” voice commands to control music and podcasts while a phone supplied the connection.
- A Spotify Premium account was required.
- The phone needed a mobile-data connection.
- The device had to connect to the vehicle’s audio system.
- It launched in the United States rather than as a worldwide product.
Spotify began selling Car Thing in the U.S. on February 22, 2022, for $89.99. Its launch announcement describes the controls and requirements at Spotify Newsroom. The company had previously framed the project as a way to learn about in-car listening, not as a broad hardware strategy; its 2019 announcement said Spotify’s focus was becoming an audio platform rather than making hardware (Spotify, May 2019).

That distinction mattered internally, but a consumer who paid $89.99 reasonably experienced Car Thing as a product, not merely as a test participant.

| July 2022 | Spotify ended production and sales, citing low demand and supply-chain issues. |
| May 23, 2024 | Spotify announced that existing devices would stop operating on December 9, 2024. |

| January 14, 2025 | Stated deadline for owners to contact customer service about refund options. |
The difference between the July 2022 sales decision and the December 2024 shutdown is crucial. Ending production leaves existing products usable; remote deactivation removes that possibility. Spotify’s support notice is at Spotify’s Car Thing discontinuation page. Contemporary reporting documented both the shutdown announcement (TechCrunch, May 23, 2024) and the final disablement (TechCrunch, December 9, 2024).
Why Spotify ended Car Thing
Spotify publicly cited low product demand, supply-chain problems, a desire to streamline its offerings and a shift toward new Spotify features rather than replacement hardware. It has not published sales figures, unit economics, infrastructure costs or detailed product research, so “low demand” should be treated as the company’s explanation—not proof that it was the only cause.
Car Thing can be judged on four separate levels:
- Business: Spotify apparently decided the product did not justify continued investment.
- Product: A dedicated Spotify controller may not have solved a large enough problem once phones, Bluetooth and built-in car systems were available.
- Platform: The accessory depended on Spotify’s authentication, software and backend services.
- Trust: A remotely disabled device leaves buyers with nonfunctional hardware after the purchase.
The strongest criticism is therefore not necessarily that Car Thing was a bad interface. It was a poor long-term ownership proposition because Spotify retained control over whether the device could perform its basic function.

Why owners objected to the shutdown
“Discontinued” can mean no new units are sold while existing units continue to work. Car Thing went further: Spotify remotely deactivated already-purchased devices and recommended that owners factory-reset and recycle them.
Refunds were not presented as an automatic, universal process equivalent to Google’s broad Stadia hardware policy. Owners were told to contact customer service by a deadline, and some cases required proof of purchase. Public reports describe different customer experiences; the available official material does not establish that every owner received a refund or that every owner was denied one.
A filed class-action complaint records allegations about the shutdown, but a complaint is not a court finding (filed complaint). The practical position in 2026 is simpler: the stated refund-contact deadline has passed, and Car Thing should not be represented in a resale listing as a functioning Spotify accessory.
Google shut down Stadia too—but left more value behind
Google announced in September 2022 that Stadia’s servers would close on January 18, 2023. Its published plan refunded eligible Stadia hardware bought through the Google Store, as well as eligible games and add-on content. Many refunds were processed automatically, and users could continue accessing Stadia until the shutdown date (Google’s Stadia shutdown FAQ; Google’s announcement).

Google also released a web tool that converted Stadia Controllers from proprietary Wi-Fi operation to Bluetooth Low Energy. The conversion was permanent, compatibility varied, and the official tool had a December 31, 2024 deadline. Wired USB use remained available. Details and limitations are documented by Google at Stadia Controller Bluetooth mode.
Stadia’s handling was not perfect. Stadia Pro subscriptions generally were not refunded for periods before the shutdown announcement, game-save portability depended on individual publishers, and Bluetooth compatibility was not guaranteed on every device. Stadia itself still closed permanently. Nevertheless, Google treated hardware and purchased content as things that required an ownership off-ramp.

What Spotify could have learned from Stadia
1. Refund eligible buyers proactively
Spotify could have identified purchasers, refunded the original payment method where possible and published clear eligibility rules before deactivation. A self-service claim path for gifts, second-hand transfers and missing receipts would have been fairer than making every owner negotiate with customer service. A substantially longer claim period would also have reduced avoidable disputes.
2. Preserve a basic mode where technically practical
Spotify could have investigated whether Car Thing could become a generic Bluetooth media controller, a USB control surface or a local dashboard for phone playback. An open-source release or community documentation might also have preserved some utility.

Those are proposals, not proven engineering facts. Car Thing’s firmware, authentication, security model, hardware limits and licensing may have made a conversion difficult or uneconomic. The defensible criticism is that Spotify did not publicly offer such an off-ramp—not that a simple conversion was guaranteed.
3. Pair notice with a useful transition
Advance warning matters only when users can do something with it. Spotify could have offered a replacement discount, Premium credit, trade-in or recycling credit, and a clear migration guide to Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth. A reduced-functionality mode would have been another option if the service could support it safely.
4. Publish an end-of-life policy before selling experimental hardware
A responsible policy should state a minimum support period, shutdown notice, refund terms, repair and recycling guidance, and any planned offline or fallback mode. “This is an experiment” can describe a product-development strategy, but it does not erase the customer’s expectation of reasonable treatment after money changes hands.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where the Stadia comparison stops
- Different technical problems: A game controller can often use standard input protocols. Car Thing was tightly integrated with Spotify’s service and may have required deeper firmware and software changes.
- Different resources: Google had greater engineering and financial capacity, while Spotify may not have considered a conversion tool worth building.
- Ongoing costs: Authentication, APIs, certificates, security maintenance and cloud services can cost money even for a small remaining user base.
- Different transaction categories: Stadia involved games, add-ons, hardware and subscriptions; Car Thing was a single-purpose accessory, so refund policies are not directly equivalent.
- Reuse is not guaranteed: Stadia’s Bluetooth mode had compatibility limits, and the technical feasibility of a Car Thing reuse mode has not been established publicly.
- A better ending cannot fix a weak product: Stadia’s refunds and controller conversion preserved goodwill but did not make the service commercially successful.
What current Car Thing owners should do
- Do not rely on Car Thing for driving or advertise it as a working Spotify device.
- If it still displays a shutdown message, treat that as a physical device with no official Spotify service behind it.
- Factory-reset it according to Spotify’s discontinuation guidance, then recycle it through an electronics-recycling program.
- If you missed the January 14, 2025 deadline, you can still ask Spotify support whether an exception is available, but no general current refund entitlement is established by the published policy.
- Be cautious with unofficial firmware or community projects. They may be experimental, unsupported, legally uncertain and unsafe or distracting to use while driving.
What to use instead
Spotify’s current in-car guidance points users toward options that do not depend on a Spotify-branded accessory: Bluetooth audio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and supported built-in vehicle stereo apps (Spotify’s in-car support guide).

Before buying any connected accessory, ask whether it works without the maker’s servers, whether it has an offline mode, how long support is promised, whether there is a refund or trade-in policy, whether it can be repurposed and whether a subscription is required.
The broader product lesson
Spotify was entitled to stop making hardware that did not meet its business goals. The avoidable damage came from treating a paid physical product as though it were only an internal experiment. Google’s Stadia shutdown demonstrates a more responsible pattern: communicate early, refund broadly, keep access available through the announced date and preserve hardware utility where practical.
That does not mean every connected device can be made open, offline or permanently useful. It does mean the exit plan should exist before launch. Once a company accepts payment for hardware, customers are owners—not test participants—and the company’s end-of-life policy becomes part of the product.
