It launched during Holiday 2024 and is now a retail-stock question. Microsoft’s U.S. product page lists it at $799.99, but Xbox announced that the 2TB model would be sunset effective August 1, 2026. Because Microsoft’s listing and sunset announcement do not perfectly agree, confirm the live checkout status, seller, delivery estimate and final price before paying.
The console remains the premium Series X choice for buyers who want a disc drive, twice the advertised storage of 1TB models and the Galaxy Black design. It is not a faster “Xbox Series X Pro”; its CPU, GPU and platform features are the same Series X class.
Updated August 18, 2026. Prices and stock are U.S.-specific and can change.
What the 2024 Xbox Series X refresh actually is
Microsoft’s 2024 refresh was a revised console assortment, not a new performance generation. The lineup comprised three models:
#1 Best Overall
- FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
- TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
- 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.
- Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition: 2TB custom NVMe SSD, 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, Galaxy Black finish and a matching controller with a Velocity Green back.
- Xbox Series X 1TB Digital Edition: Robot White, 1TB SSD and no optical disc drive.
- Xbox Series S 1TB: Robot White and the lower-performance Series S platform.
Microsoft described the 2TB console as having the same speed, performance and features as the standard Series X. The meaningful differences are capacity, disc support and the special-edition design. Microsoft’s 2024 announcement originally positioned the model for Holiday 2024 availability in select markets.
Can you preorder the 2TB Xbox Series X now?
No. “Preorder” was accurate before its 2024 release. In 2026, you are looking for remaining retail inventory, not a preorder allocation. Xbox’s June 25, 2026 announcement says the 2TB model is being sunset, so remaining units may be limited. That does not prove that every unit is gone: Microsoft still has a live product page, and regional inventory can differ.
Current U.S. price and availability
Microsoft’s indexed U.S. product page lists the Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition at $799.99 and has shown purchase options such as free two- to three-day shipping. Search-indexed Microsoft pages have also shown “out of stock,” so treat the figure as a listing signal rather than a guaranteed nationwide street price.
| Price record | What it means |
|---|---|
| $599.99 | Microsoft’s official 2024 launch price. |
| $729.99 | U.S. recommended pricing recorded by Microsoft as of May 1, 2025. |
| $799.99 | Price currently shown on the indexed Microsoft product page; verify it in your cart. |

What comes in the box
- Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition console
- Matching Xbox Wireless Controller, with Galaxy Black front and Velocity Green back
- Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable
- Power cord
Games are not included. Game Pass is a separate purchase unless a particular bundle or promotion explicitly says otherwise.
Disc drive and storage details
Yes, this model includes a 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive. It can play physical Xbox games and compatible backward-compatible discs, 4K UHD Blu-ray movies, digital downloads and Game Pass titles. The 1TB Digital Edition cannot read discs, so it is not an equivalent substitute for someone with a physical library or 4K Blu-ray collection.
The advertised 2TB is the drive’s total capacity, not guaranteed free game space. The operating system and reserved system data reduce usable space, and Microsoft does not publish a guaranteed usable-capacity figure on the cited product page.
Storage can be expanded with an Xbox Storage Expansion Card, which matches the internal drive’s performance and can run Series X|S-optimized games directly. A USB 3.1 external hard drive is useful for storing games and running supported older titles, but optimized Series X|S games generally must be moved to internal storage or an approved expansion card to play. Expansion-card pricing should be checked separately because adding one later can change the value calculation.

Physical-game collectors
Buy it when you need a disc drive for existing games, used purchases, backward-compatible discs or 4K Blu-ray. The Digital Edition would require replacing physical software with digital licenses.
Players with large installations
Two terabytes is twice the advertised capacity of the 1TB Series X models, reducing how often you move large games or add expansion storage. Remember that usable space is lower than the headline capacity.

- BRILLIANT DESIGN A bold and refined design, crafted to compliment your Xbox
- LIGHT IT UP A built-in LED bar illuminates your gaming center in Xbox green
- WARRANTY Enjoy peace of mind with the included 3-year Rescue Data Recovery Services and 1-year limited warranty
Collectors and design-focused buyers
The Galaxy Black finish and matching controller are the principal reasons to pay a premium beyond storage and disc functionality. Microsoft originally described the Special Edition as limited in select markets.
Existing 1TB Series X owners
There is no meaningful performance upgrade. Consider it only if built-in capacity, the special design or replacing a failing console matters more than keeping your current hardware and adding storage.
Digital-only and budget buyers
Skip the 2TB model if you do not use discs and the $799.99 listing is confirmed. A 1TB Digital Edition, including a certified-refurbished unit, leaves more money for games, Game Pass or a display, although it provides less storage.
Check these details before ordering
- Open the live Microsoft product page, not only a search-result snippet.
- Confirm that an active purchase button appears and that the item is not marked out of stock.
- Verify the final cart price, taxes, delivery estimate and shipping terms.
- Check whether Microsoft or a marketplace seller is fulfilling the order.
- Confirm the listing says 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition, rather than the 1TB Digital Edition.
- For refurbished stock, verify condition, warranty, return period and the actual seller.
- Save the order details because stock and pricing can change after checkout.
Verdict: buy, wait or skip?
Buy if you specifically want a disc-based Series X, 2TB of advertised internal storage and the Galaxy Black design, and the live price is acceptable. Skip if you play only digital games, already own a working 1TB Series X or are primarily seeking higher performance. At a confirmed $799.99, compare the premium with a cheaper 1TB console plus any storage expansion you would actually buy. Because Microsoft has announced the 2TB model’s sunset while still showing a product page, treat any available unit as remaining stock rather than an ongoing preorder program.
