Apple Warns Some iPhone Users About Targeted Spyware: How to Verify the Alert and Respond

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s spyware warnings are real, serious notifications—but they are not evidence that every iPhone user is under attack. Apple says it periodically alerts a small number of people when it has high confidence they were individually targeted by highly sophisticated “mercenary spyware,” often because of their work, public role, or access to sensitive information. Most iPhone owners will never face this class of attack.

The practical priorities are straightforward: install the latest security update, verify any warning directly through Apple, use Lockdown Mode when your risk is genuinely elevated, and seek specialist help instead of relying on a consumer antivirus app to prove that a device is clean.

What Apple’s spyware warning actually means

Apple describes mercenary-spyware notifications as warnings that it detected activity consistent with an attack and has high confidence the recipient was individually targeted. The alert does not, by itself, prove that spyware successfully infected the iPhone, identify the spyware family, or disclose the technical indicators Apple used. Apple also says it does not reveal those details because doing so could help attackers evade detection. Apple’s guidance says notifications have been issued multiple times per year since 2021 to people in more than 150 countries.

A May 2025 warning wave reportedly reached users in about 100 countries, including journalists and political figures, but the specific spyware involved was not publicly established in the available reporting. Names such as Pegasus, Predator, or LightSpy should not be treated as confirmed attribution unless the original investigators or Apple explicitly make that connection.

Mercenary spyware is not ordinary phone malware

Commercial surveillance tools are developed and sold to governments or law-enforcement customers and used against selected individuals. They differ from consumer malware and stalkerware, which may arrive through a malicious app, physical access, phishing, an abusive partner, or a compromised account.

An exploit-based attack abuses a vulnerability in iOS or an app. In some cases, the victim may not need to tap anything, but “zero-click” should be used only when a technical investigation confirms it. Account compromise is different again: an attacker can steal an Apple Account, email, messaging, or cloud credentials without installing spyware on the iPhone.

Who is most likely to be targeted?

Attackers generally spend substantial resources on people whose work or relationships make them strategically valuable, rather than on random iPhone owners. Groups commonly associated with targeted surveillance include:

  • Journalists and media workers handling confidential sources.
  • Human-rights defenders, activists, and dissidents.
  • Political opposition figures and elected officials.
  • Diplomats and government personnel.
  • Lawyers, researchers, and investigators.
  • Executives and employees in sensitive industries.
  • People connected to a high-value investigation or another important target.

Occupation alone does not establish risk. The useful question is whether a particular person, their contacts, or their information would justify an expensive individualized operation.

What sophisticated spyware may be able to do

Capabilities vary by implant, exploit chain, permissions, and persistence. Depending on the compromise, spyware may be capable of:

  • Reading messages and email after access is gained.
  • Viewing files, contacts, calendars, and location data.
  • Monitoring activity inside apps.
  • Accessing the microphone or camera.
  • Capturing screen contents or authentication material.
  • Reading messages in end-to-end encrypted apps after they are decrypted for display on the device.

This does not mean spyware “breaks” Signal or WhatsApp encryption. Malware running on the endpoint can see information before an app encrypts it or after the app decrypts it for you.

How to tell whether an Apple notification is genuine

Do not trust a link in an unexpected “Apple spyware” email or text. Apple says a genuine threat notification can appear in these places:

  • At the top of the page after you sign in at account.apple.com.
  • By email to an address associated with your Apple Account.
  • By iMessage to a phone number associated with the account.

Type account.apple.com into your browser yourself. Apple says its threat notifications will never ask you to click a link, open an attachment, install an app or configuration profile, provide your Apple Account password, or send a verification code by email or phone. A message requesting any of those actions is a phishing warning sign.

What every iPhone user should do now

1. Install the latest security update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Install the newest available iOS update and restart if requested.

Apple advises everyone to keep devices updated because releases include security fixes. Updating is essential, but it is not a forensic examination and does not prove that a previously compromised phone is clean. Update other Apple devices connected to the same account as well.

2. Secure the Apple Account

  • Use a long, unique Apple Account password.
  • Keep two-factor authentication enabled.
  • Use a strong iPhone passcode.
  • Review the devices signed in to the Apple Account and remove anything unfamiliar.
  • Treat unexpected password-reset prompts, verification codes, and login alerts as possible account attacks.
  • Install iPhone apps from the App Store and avoid unknown links and attachments.

When Lockdown Mode is appropriate

Lockdown Mode is Apple’s optional, extreme protection for the small number of people who may face highly sophisticated targeted attacks. On supported iPhones, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Lockdown Mode → Turn On Lockdown Mode. It reduces the attack surface; it does not make an iPhone invulnerable.

It is a sensible choice if Apple has issued a verified notification, a trusted security organization recommends it, or you face credible individualized surveillance risk and can accept feature restrictions. It is not a routine replacement for updates and account security.

Restrictions can include blocked message attachments, disabled link previews and some web technologies, limits on FaceTime invitations and Apple service requests from people you have not contacted, wired accessories requiring an unlocked iPhone, and websites, apps, or services working differently. Shared Albums, SharePlay, FaceTime Live Photos, and some Continuity features may be unavailable. Enable it on all relevant Apple devices for complete coverage; a compatible paired Apple Watch is placed in Lockdown Mode with the iPhone. See Apple’s Lockdown Mode guide and availability information.

Use Safety Check for sharing and account problems

Safety Check is useful for stalking, domestic-abuse, unauthorized sharing, or unexplained account access, but it is not a spyware scanner. On an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Safety Check. The feature requires an Apple Account with two-factor authentication and that account to be signed in under Settings.

Emergency Reset

Emergency Reset immediately stops sharing information with people and apps and lets you review account security. In a coercive-control situation, consider whether sudden changes could alert an abuser; Apple provides a Quick Exit option and recommends planning for personal safety.

Manage Sharing & Access

This option reviews sharing with individual people and apps, devices connected to the Apple Account, app privacy permissions, the iPhone passcode, Apple Account password, trusted phone numbers, and related settings. It cannot inspect every third-party account, social-media setting, or device signed in to another Apple Account. Details are in Apple’s Safety Check documentation.

If Apple warned you: follow this sequence

  1. Verify the notification directly at account.apple.com.
  2. Do not click links, open attachments, install profiles, or share passwords and codes from the message.
  3. Update the iPhone and other Apple devices.
  4. Enable Lockdown Mode.
  5. From a trusted device, change the Apple Account password if compromise is suspected.
  6. Review Apple Account devices and trusted phone numbers.
  7. Secure email, messaging, cloud, and work accounts separately.
  8. Preserve the notification, its date, related emails, messages, and suspicious events.
  9. Contact a reputable digital-security organization or incident-response specialist.
  10. Use a separate trusted device for sensitive communications and avoid discussing the warning on the potentially compromised phone.

Do not immediately erase the phone if a forensic investigation or legal case may matter. A factory reset can remove some malware, but it can also destroy evidence and does not fix compromised accounts or other devices. Apple points people needing emergency assistance toward external resources such as the Consumer Reports Security Planner. Apple’s notification guidance explains the process and its limitations.

Can a security app detect mercenary spyware?

Security apps can check for known indicators, outdated software, risky configurations, and some suspicious files or persistence mechanisms. They cannot guarantee that an advanced or previously unknown spyware infection is absent. A clean result is not a forensic clean bill of health.

iVerify Basic is an optional U.S. App Store check; its listing showed $0.99 at the time of review. It should supplement—not replace—expert analysis after an Apple warning. iVerify EDR is an enterprise product whose listing says organizational enrollment is required, so it is not a simple free consumer scanner.

Seek specialist assistance especially after an Apple notification, when handling sensitive source, legal, medical, government, or investigative information, after repeated account-security events, or when stalking or domestic abuse is suspected. Rebooting may temporarily disrupt some memory-resident malware, but it is not a cure, detection method, or substitute for updates and forensic advice.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming all iPhone users are being targeted.
  • Treating an alert as proof that Pegasus or another named family is installed.
  • Assuming an antivirus result proves the phone is safe.
  • Believing a factory reset always solves the problem.
  • Assuming encrypted messaging prevents endpoint compromise.
  • Turning on Lockdown Mode without understanding its usability cost—or treating it as invulnerability.
  • Changing settings in a domestic-abuse situation without considering personal safety.
  • Relying on an old iOS version number instead of installing the current update.
