Its official U.S. list price is $99.99. It is already a released set-top box, not an upcoming Chromecast rumor. The U.S. Google Store currently lists it for purchase, although inventory, colors, delivery and promotions can change.
Google positions the Streamer as its premium replacement for Chromecast, adding more storage, Ethernet and Google Home smart-home hub features. The required HDMI 2.1 cable is sold separately.
Official price and release timeline
The standard U.S. price is $99.99. That is the list price for the Google TV Streamer (4K), remote and supplied power components—not a temporary sale price. Taxes and delivery costs vary by location. The Google Store or a retailer may show a discount, financing offer, bundle or service incentive, but those should be treated separately from the $99.99 MSRP.
Google announced the product and opened U.S. preorders on August 6, 2024. General retail availability began September 24, 2024. Google’s announcement gives the launch price and timeline at blog.google.

Prices and supported services outside the United States are regional, so the $99.99 figure should not be converted into a worldwide price.

Setup requirements
- A television or display with an HDMI port
- External electrical power
- A Wi-Fi network or compatible wired Ethernet connection
- A Google Account
- A compatible mobile device for setup
- An HDMI cable, purchased separately
Google recommends a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for optimal performance. Connect the box directly to the television or through an HDMI-compatible receiver or soundbar. HDMI, HDCP, receiver settings and TV input modes can affect 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision and audio handshakes.

Google’s detailed specifications and comparison are documented in its Google TV Streamer support page. “4K” is a maximum output capability, not a guarantee that every title will play in 4K. The television, app, subscription tier, title, network, HDMI cable and HDCP chain all need to support the desired format.
Audio and HDR qualifications
Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos depend on compatible televisions, receivers or soundbars, supported content and the streaming service’s subscription and app implementation. Device support alone does not provide Dolby Vision or Atmos for every program or every television.

Google TV and the smart-home role
Google TV is the software interface and entertainment platform; the Google TV Streamer is the physical hardware. The box can act as a Google Home hub, communicate with Matter devices and operate as a Thread border router. Compatible lights, cameras, thermostats, blinds and other devices can appear in the Google Home panel on the TV. Features vary with the device, account, region and supported integration; Matter compatibility does not make every product expose identical controls.
Google TV Streamer versus Chromecast with Google TV 4K
Google’s comparison uses $49.99 for Chromecast with Google TV 4K. That is a comparison price, not a promise that every retailer still has stock. Google has moved its premium streaming strategy to the Streamer, while existing Chromecast devices are not automatically rendered unusable.
| Feature | Google TV Streamer (4K) | Chromecast with Google TV (4K) |
|---|---|---|
| Google comparison price | $99.99 | $49.99 |
| Form factor | Set-top box | HDMI dongle |
| Storage | 32GB | 8GB |
| RAM | 4GB | 2GB |
| Dolby Vision | Yes | Yes |
| Built-in Ethernet | Yes | No; generally requires an adapter |
| Matter/Google Home hub role | Yes | No equivalent full hub role listed |
| Thread border router | Yes | No |
| Remote finder | Yes | No |
| Customizable remote button | Yes | No |
The Streamer has four times the listed storage and twice the RAM, plus Ethernet and newer smart-home hardware. Google also describes its CPU as 22% faster than the Chromecast with Google TV 4K; that is Google’s claim rather than an independent benchmark or a guarantee that every app will feel faster.

Who should upgrade from Chromecast?
- Owners who frequently run out of storage or install many apps
- Homes that need a wired Ethernet connection
- Google Home users adding Matter or Thread devices
- Viewers with Dolby Vision televisions and compatible Atmos equipment
- Anyone who regularly loses a remote and wants a finder
The older Chromecast remains sensible when its compact dongle design and lower comparison price matter more than storage, Ethernet or hub functions. Confirm actual stock and condition before buying because retailer availability changes.
Is $99.99 good value?
The price makes sense when you need the box’s extras
- Wired networking: Gigabit Ethernet helps in congested Wi-Fi environments and fixed home-theater installations.
- More headroom: 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage leave more room for apps than the older Chromecast’s 2GB and 8GB.
- Google Home integration: Matter and Thread support can consolidate compatible smart-home controls on the television.
- Premium formats: Dolby Vision and Atmos support matter when the television and audio chain support them.
- Remote quality of life: The customizable button can launch an app, switch inputs or open the Google Home panel, and the remote can be located through a Google Assistant-enabled speaker, Pixel phone, the button on the streamer’s rear or the Google Home app. Google explains the finder feature in its announcement.
When another device is a better fit
- You need only basic HD streaming and your existing TV software is responsive.
- You want the smallest possible HDMI stick rather than a box.
- Your household does not use Google Home, Matter or Thread products.
- You are buying primarily for gaming; this is not positioned as a gaming-focused box.
- You prefer Roku’s simpler, platform-centered interface or Apple’s ecosystem and AirPlay-oriented features.
- You already have a satisfactory Google TV interface built into the television.
Google’s store has displayed temporary discounts, including a dated $74.99 promotion, but a sale price should not be confused with the regular $99.99 list price. The same applies to any bundle, trade-in credit or subscription incentive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does it work with any television?
It works with displays that have HDMI, including televisions whose native resolution is below 4K. A 1080p television cannot show 4K output, and HDR or Dolby Vision requires matching display and content support. The streamer needs its own power connection; HDMI alone is not the intended power source.

For a stable setup, use Ethernet when the box is near a router and Wi-Fi is congested. If Dolby Vision, Atmos or 4K playback fails, check the cable certification, TV input mode, receiver or soundbar compatibility, HDCP path, app settings, subscription tier and title support before assuming the streamer is defective.
Alternatives
Roku Ultra
Roku’s official page lists the Roku Ultra at $99.99 and describes 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Ethernet and a rechargeable Voice Remote Pro with backlit buttons and remote finding. It is a strong alternative for buyers who prefer Roku’s interface and ecosystem, but it does not target Google Home, Matter or Thread hub functionality. See Roku’s Roku Ultra page.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K
Roku lists the Streaming Stick 4K at $49.99. It is a smaller, lower-cost 4K stick with Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Choose it when compact size and price matter more than built-in Ethernet or Google smart-home features. See Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K page.
Chromecast with Google TV 4K
It remains the closest lower-cost predecessor, with 8GB of storage and 2GB of RAM, but the $49.99 figure is Google’s comparison price and availability may be limited or retailer-dependent. The Streamer is the better match for buyers who specifically want Ethernet, more storage or Google Home hub hardware.

Buying checklist
- Confirm that $99.99 is the current U.S. list price rather than a temporary promotion.
- Budget for a separate HDMI 2.1 Ultra High Speed cable.
- Check that the television, receiver or soundbar supports the desired 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision and Atmos formats.
- Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet based on router location and network congestion.
- Verify Google Account, mobile-device and Google Home requirements.
- Check color and delivery availability before ordering; the U.S. colors are Porcelain and Google Store-exclusive Hazel.
Verdict
The Google TV Streamer (4K) is a released $99.99 U.S. product, with a September 24, 2024 launch date. It is not a renamed Chromecast dongle: the box adds 32GB storage, 4GB RAM, built-in Ethernet, Matter and Thread capabilities and a more capable remote. Those upgrades make it compelling for Google Home households, wired home theaters and heavy app users. Basic streamers, existing smart-TV owners and shoppers seeking the cheapest compact stick may get better value elsewhere—and every buyer should account for the separately sold HDMI cable.
