It is a filter within Google Search, not a separate search engine or a switch that permanently disables Google’s AI features. The presentation is more traditional, but the ranking systems, index and many modern parts of Google Search remain.
What Google’s Web filter does
Google’s Web filter changes the results view for a search. Google describes it as showing “only text-based links,” without features such as AI Overviews. It sits alongside other result filters, such as Images, Videos and News; it is not a new index, crawler or independent search engine. Google Search Help explains the Web filter.
The distinction is useful: a standard results page can combine web links with generated summaries and specialized results. The Web view puts conventional links at the center, so you can choose which pages to open and compare.
Why Google added a link-focused view
Traditional search gives you a ranked list of pages, with titles and snippets to help you decide what to visit. Generative search instead may synthesize an answer first and provide links for further reading. That can be convenient for orientation, but it also asks you to assess a summary before you have inspected its sources.

Google introduced the Web filter amid the 2024 expansion of AI Overviews in the United States. Google says Overviews are intended to help with complex questions and include links for exploration; it also warns that generative AI can make mistakes. The filter gives users another route: go directly to ranked pages instead of starting with Google’s synthesis. Google’s May 2024 explanation of AI Overviews describes the rollout and Google’s rationale.
How to switch to Web results
- Open Google Search and enter your query.
- Submit the search, then look along the filter row near the top of the results.
- Select Web. If it is not shown, open More and look for Web.
The resulting page should emphasize text-based web links and omit AI Overviews. Google does not promise that every other modern Search element disappears. Filter placement and availability can vary with the interface you are using.
What Web changes—and what it does not promise
| Web is intended to do | It does not necessarily do |
|---|---|
| Show text-based links to webpages | Remove every ad, snippet or other interface element |
| Omit features such as AI Overviews from this filtered view | Turn off AI features throughout Google or set a permanent preference |
| Make source pages easier to scan and choose | Restore Google’s old ranking systems, index or business model |
| Offer a link-oriented alternative to richer results | Guarantee the same layout or controls on every device and in every region |
Google says AI Overviews are a core Search feature and does not offer a standard control to turn them off altogether. Web is the supported way to get a link-focused results view for a search, rather than a global AI-off setting. Google’s help page sets out that distinction.

Web results, AI Overviews and AI Mode
These are different ways to use Google, not interchangeable names for one setting.
- Web filter: A conventional, link-oriented results view that omits features such as AI Overviews.
- AI Overview: A generated summary that may appear as part of ordinary Search results.
- AI Mode: A more conversational generative-search experience.
Google continues to develop AI Mode and AI Overviews, including additional ways to surface links and websites. Its May 2026 announcement treats those as generative-search experiences, distinct from the Web filter. Google’s announcement on generative AI Search describes those updates.
Which search view should you use?
| Choose | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Web | Finding original pages, comparing sources, locating niche material, or checking a consequential claim | You do more of the reading and evaluation yourself; specialized results may be less prominent. |
| Ordinary Search | A mix of web pages and Google’s other available tools, such as maps, images, videos, news, product listings or quick answers | The page may include generated or specialized features rather than a simple link list. |
| A specialized filter | A task that specifically calls for Images, Videos, News or another available category | It narrows the results to that category rather than giving a general web view. |
| AI Overview or AI Mode | Getting an initial synthesis or exploring a question conversationally | A generated answer is not a substitute for checking important claims against source material. |
For disputed or high-stakes information, use Web to find sources, then open more than one reliable page—preferably the original or an authoritative source. Google advises checking important information in more than one place because AI responses may contain errors. Google Search Help gives that warning.

Is this really the old Google?
In presentation, partly: the page is more centered on titles, snippets and links, and leaves more of the selection to you. That can make it easier to compare pages before reading one. But the filter does not rewind Google to an earlier era. Modern ranking, ads, personalization, localization and changes to the index still matter; snippets and other elements may remain as well.
Google’s older guide to conventional search describes ranked results through titles, URLs and snippets, alongside specialized search services. It is useful historical context, not a specification for today’s exact page. The historical Google Guide outlines that earlier model.

If Web is missing or the results still look busy
Web is not visible
Check the filter row and then More. If the option still does not appear, return to an ordinary Google web search and try in a browser rather than an embedded search inside another app. Google’s filter guidance also notes that the option may be in the filter list. Google’s Search community guide covers finding it. Do not assume every user sees identical controls.
The page still has ads or other elements
Web means a link-focused view, not an ad-free page or a promise that all snippets and modern interface elements are gone. Google’s description is narrower: text-based links without features such as AI Overviews.
You need maps, shopping or another specialized result
Web may not be the best view for a task that depends on a map, product listing, image, video or news result. Use ordinary Search or the relevant specialized filter when that information is the point of the search.
You want to stop seeing AI Overviews everywhere
The Web filter applies to the current results view; it is not a permanent preference that disables AI Overviews across Google Search. Google’s standard interface does not provide a global off switch. Avoid treating unofficial browser extensions or URL tricks as guaranteed settings: they are not Google’s supported control and may stop working.

How search results can differ
The filter’s position, available categories and result presentation can vary. Google says results may differ with personalization, language and location; device, app, query and interface changes can also affect what you see. Google’s help on personalized results explains some of the variation.
The Web filter is best understood as a choice about how to view a particular search—not a return to a previous version of Google. Start with ordinary Search when you want its full range of result types; switch to Web when you want to inspect the pages themselves rather than begin with a generated summary.
