ExpressVPN and Zoom became available as Apple TV apps in December 2023, after tvOS 17 added third-party VPN support and Continuity Camera features. They solve different problems: ExpressVPN covers traffic from the Apple TV itself, while Zoom turns the television into a meeting display but uses an iPhone or iPad for the camera and microphone. This is a historical launch, not a new 2026 announcement; check the current App Store listings, requirements and feature support before installing.
Coverage published December 4, 2023 reported the arrival of both apps. Apple had announced the platform changes earlier in 2023: tvOS 17 introduced third-party VPN support and Continuity Camera APIs, and tvOS 17 became available on September 18, 2023.
What ExpressVPN adds to Apple TV
A VPN app running on the television
ExpressVPN’s native tvOS app was designed to connect the Apple TV directly to a VPN server. That can protect traffic originating from the Apple TV, provide a different apparent network location, and help with permitted access to private or organizational networks without configuring a compatible router. The 2023 report said ExpressVPN promoted HD and 4K streaming and servers in 105 countries; those were launch-era claims, not current specifications. Check ExpressVPN’s current site for supported tvOS versions, locations, protocols and policies.
What it does not cover
A device-level Apple TV VPN does not automatically protect phones, laptops, game consoles, other televisions or smart-home devices. Whole-home coverage generally requires a router-level VPN or VPN-enabled router. A VPN also encrypts the connection between the Apple TV and the VPN provider; it does not make you anonymous, remove account identifiers or override a streaming service’s terms.

Streaming and location limits
Changing the Apple TV’s apparent IP address may help with legitimate location-privacy or network-access needs, but it does not guarantee access to another country’s streaming catalog. Services can detect and block VPN or proxy addresses, catalogs are controlled by licensing, and a VPN cannot supply a subscription unavailable in your country. Video quality also depends on the service, connection, server distance and VPN overhead.
What Zoom for Home TV adds
A large-screen meeting interface
The separate Zoom – for Home TV listing gave Apple TV a television-sized interface for joining meetings. The launch report described gallery viewing, screen sharing, chat, invitations and breakout-room participation. Zoom can be useful for family calls, living-room or conference-room meetings, presentations and hybrid groups that need a larger view.

The important iPhone or iPad requirement
Apple TV is not a self-contained video-call camera. Continuity Camera lets a compatible nearby iPhone or iPad provide the camera and microphone while Apple TV supplies the display and app interface. Apple described the same architecture for FaceTime on Apple TV 4K. Current Zoom features and the app’s availability may differ from the 2023 launch, so confirm them in the tvOS App Store.

Apple’s hardware qualification appears in its tvOS 17 availability announcement. The Apple TV 4K product page is the appropriate place to verify current hardware generations.

How to set up Zoom on Apple TV
- Update Apple TV and the iPhone or iPad you plan to use for Continuity Camera.
- Install the current Zoom tvOS app if it is listed in your region; the historical listing was called Zoom – for Home TV.
- Open Zoom on Apple TV and follow its sign-in or pairing prompts.
- Bring the unlocked iPhone or iPad near the television when prompted and grant camera and microphone permissions.
- Place the device where its camera frames the room. Test the meeting before an important call.
tvOS and Zoom interfaces may have changed since 2023, so treat the on-screen wording as authoritative rather than relying on an old menu path.
If Continuity Camera does not appear
- Install pending updates and verify that the devices meet the current app requirements.
- Keep the iPhone or iPad unlocked, nearby and free from another app using its camera.
- Recheck camera and microphone permissions.
- Confirm the devices are signed in as required and connected to the expected network.
- Restart both devices and repeat pairing.
- For echo, avoid having the television and mobile device feed the same room audio at full volume; use a headset or adjust speaker placement.
Using ExpressVPN responsibly on Apple TV
- Install the current ExpressVPN tvOS app, if available for your Apple TV model and region.
- Sign in through the method shown by the app.
- Select a permitted server location and connect.
- Test the specific app or private network you need, then disconnect or change servers if performance is poor.
Expect possible buffering or reduced quality when a server is distant or overloaded. A corporate or school network may block VPN protocols, and a streaming service may reject the connection even when the VPN is working.

Who benefits—and who should choose another setup?
Good fits
- Households that want VPN coverage specifically for Apple TV.
- Remote workers or educators accessing a permitted private network from the television.
- Families and groups that want meetings visible on a large shared screen.
- Apple users who already own a compatible iPhone or iPad for Continuity Camera.
Poor fits
- Anyone needing every home device protected; use a router-level solution instead.
- Users without a compatible iPhone or iPad who expect Zoom camera and audio from Apple TV alone.
- People requiring advanced host controls, multiple external cameras or managed room audio; a laptop, HDMI connection or dedicated conference hardware is usually more capable.
- Anyone selecting a VPN solely to defeat a streaming provider’s geographic controls.
Alternatives
VPN choices
The 2023 report also mentioned VPNify, X-VPN, IPVanish, PureVPN, hide.me, LeapVPN, US VPN and Anycast. Treat that list as historical, not as a current recommendation or availability guarantee. Compare native Apple TV support, router support, privacy policy, independent audits, speed, server coverage, simultaneous connections, refund terms and customer support.
Video calling
- FaceTime: A natural Apple-centric alternative using the same Continuity Camera concept.
- Webex: Apple identified it as another video-conferencing app planned for the platform; verify current availability.
- Laptop plus TV: Better for advanced Zoom controls, external webcams and complex screen sharing.
- AirPlay or HDMI: Simpler in some homes, though notifications, latency and resolution can be drawbacks.
- Dedicated room hardware: More appropriate for regularly used offices and managed deployments.
Current-status check before you install
The ExpressVPN and Zoom story describes a December 2023 launch enabled by tvOS 17. App names, regional listings, minimum versions, features, server counts and subscription requirements can change. Check the current Apple TV App Store listing, ExpressVPN order page and Zoom pricing page before committing to a purchase. Do not treat Apple’s historical 2022 Apple TV 4K starting price of $129, reported in its launch announcement, as a current price.

The Bottom Line
ExpressVPN and Zoom made Apple TV 4K more useful in late 2023, but they are not one combined feature: ExpressVPN protects Apple TV traffic only, and Zoom requires an iPhone or iPad for camera and microphone input. Verify current app availability and hardware requirements before relying on either in 2026.
