Google Maps replaced the “Speed trap” incident label with the broader “Police” category in November 2024. The change covers police presence that may involve traffic direction, a roadside stop, crash response, or other activity—not necessarily speed enforcement. Google’s current Android Auto documentation still lists “Mobile speed camera” separately where supported.
What changed in Google Maps?
The old Speed trap option was renamed Police in the incident-reporting menu. Contemporary coverage observed the change in November 2024, while Google’s July 2024 product announcement described the redesigned system as reporting police presence. The menu position can vary by country, device, app version, and active incident categories.
| Report type | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Police | Police activity or presence nearby; it does not establish that a speed trap is operating. |
| Mobile speed camera | A mobile camera or mobile speed-enforcement unit, where the option is available. |
| Permanent speed-camera alert | A separate camera-alert or map-data feature, not the reason for the 2024 label change. |
See the November 2024 report on the label change and Google’s July 31, 2024 announcement.
Why does Google use “Police” instead of “Speed trap”?
“Speed trap” assumes officers are specifically enforcing speeding. A visible police vehicle could instead be directing traffic, handling a collision, making a roadside stop, operating a checkpoint, or dealing with another incident. Police lets a driver report the presence without guessing the officer’s purpose. Google has not published a more detailed explanation than this broader police-presence framing.

Is a Police alert the same as a speed-trap warning?
No. A Police report means that a user reported police activity near that location. It does not confirm radar or lidar use, a speeding operation, the officer’s direction of travel, or that the officer is still there. Treat it as situational community information, not an official police bulletin or permission to change how you drive.
Can you still report a mobile speed camera?
Yes, in supported environments. Google’s current Android Auto help documentation lists Mobile speed camera separately from Police, along with other incident types. Do not select Mobile speed camera merely because a police car is present.
Permanent speed cameras are a separate matter. In a June 7, 2026 announcement, Waze said permanent speed-camera alerts would begin surfacing in Google Maps from Waze mapping data. Availability and behavior can vary by country and platform; this development is separate from the 2024 Police rename. Read the Waze announcement for that rollout.

How to report police activity
Google Maps on a phone
- Start a driving route and begin navigation.
- Open the incident-report control, commonly shown as a report or plus button.
- Choose Police.
- Submit only when doing so is safe and legal. Do not handle a phone while driving if that would distract you or violate local law.
The mobile control can differ between Android and iPhone versions, so Google does not guarantee an identical button layout on every handset.

Apple CarPlay and cars with Google built in
Google announced the redesigned incident system for Android, iOS, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and cars with Google built in. Controls are not necessarily identical across those integrations. How reports are confirmed and removed
Other drivers may see a report as they approach while navigating and may hear an alert if their settings allow it. At or near the reported location, Maps can ask whether the incident is still present and offer Yes or No. That confirmation process means reports are dynamic rather than permanent markers.
Google’s Android Auto documentation describes reports in this workflow as anonymous and says trip reports may be retained without being associated with the user’s account. That statement applies to the documented feature workflow; it is not a claim that all navigation or location data is unlinked from an account.
Why the Police option may be missing
- You are not actively navigating.
- Your phone, vehicle display, or integration supports viewing or voting but not creating reports.
- The incident type is restricted in your country.
- Your account is not signed in on the car display.
- The app, vehicle integration, or interface has a different rollout or menu arrangement.
- The report menu is currently showing a reduced set of categories.
A missing button does not prove that reinstalling the app will restore it. Check active navigation, account sign-in, vehicle compatibility, and local availability first.

- 2.5K Front + 1080P Rear Recording: S60 records 25601440P front video and 1080P rear video to help capture what happens ahead of and behind your car. The front 170 wide-angle lens helps cover more of the road during daily drives or unexpected events
- WDR Night Vision: The starlight night vision sensor and 6-layer glass lens help improve video clarity in low-light conditions. WDR helps balance bright headlights and darker areas, making footage easier to review at night, in tunnels, parking lots, and other changing light conditions
- Loop Recording & G-Sensor Lock: Loop recording replaces older unprotected clips when the card is full. SD card is not included, and the dash cam supports cards up to 256GB. If a sudden impact, hard braking, or collision is detected, the G-sensor locks the current clip to help protect important footage
- Optional 24-Hour Parking Monitor: S60 supports a 24-hour parking monitor with time-lapse recording. This feature requires a compatible Type-C hardwire kit, not included
- 2" IPS Screen & 360 Suction Mount: The 2" IPS screen lets you check the camera view and adjust basic settings directly on the device. The 360 suction mount makes it easier to adjust the camera angle and remove or reinstall the unit
Google Maps and Waze reports
Google says incident reports in Maps and Waze come from the two apps’ communities and that users can see which app supplied a report. That does not mean the products have identical databases, moderation, report lifetimes, or alert coverage. Google Maps integrates reports into its navigation interface; Waze has its own community-reporting workflow.
Accuracy and safety limitations
- A report can be stale, misplaced, duplicated, or refer to police on the opposite side of a divided road.
- An alert may describe a routine traffic stop or crash response rather than speed enforcement.
- Reports may not appear immediately or to every driver; Google says they may appear as users approach.
- Continue obeying posted limits and traffic laws regardless of alerts.
- Report only when safe. Avoid touching a phone or display in a way that diverts attention from driving, and follow local laws governing in-car device use and reporting.
Bottom line
Police is the broader replacement for Google Maps’ old Speed trap label. It reports nearby police presence, not a confirmed speeding operation. Mobile speed camera remains a separate documented report type where supported, while permanent-camera alerts use a distinct map-data system. Availability depends on country, device, vehicle integration, and rollout.
