Google announced Simplify on May 6, 2025, as an AI feature in the Google app for iOS. It rewrites text you select on a web page into simpler language, so you can work through jargon without leaving the page. The launch announcement describes an iPhone and iPad app feature—not a general Google Search setting, a new Gemini chatbot, or the same feature as AI Overviews.
What Google’s Simplify feature does
Simplify takes a passage you select on a web page and presents an easier-to-understand version. It is meant to help with dense wording or unfamiliar terminology while you continue reading the original page. It does not automatically rewrite the whole page or replace its text.

Google’s announcement describes Simplify as AI-powered but does not identify a specific Gemini model. It is best understood as a focused reading aid: you choose the text, and the tool rephrases it. The rewrite is not a fact-check or an authoritative interpretation.

How to use Simplify
- Open the Google app on an iPhone or iPad.
- Open a web page in the app.
- Find the passage you want help understanding.
- Select the relevant text.
- Tap the Simplify icon that appears.
- Read the generated version and compare it with the original before relying on it for an important decision.
The first five steps follow Google’s described interaction. Comparing the rewrite with the source is a sensible precaution, not a requirement Google states.

What it can help explain
Simplify may be useful when you understand a page’s general subject but get stuck on a particular passage. Examples include a technical explanation with specialist terms, an academic paragraph, or formal wording on a government or product-support page. These are reasonable use cases for the feature’s stated purpose, not a guarantee that it handles every page or subject reliably.

Google announced a separate AI Overview option to simplify language or provide more detail on May 14, 2024. That announcement initially described the option as coming to Search Labs for English queries in the United States. It is distinct from the May 2025 Simplify tool, which starts with text selected on a page. Google’s current Search help says AI Overviews are a core Search feature in supported markets and languages; the Web filter can show text-based links without features such as AI Overviews.

Where Simplify is available—and what is not confirmed
Google’s May 6, 2025 announcement specifies the Google app for iOS and the web-page selection interaction. It does not establish availability in desktop Search, Chrome on iPhone, Safari, the Android Google app, every country or language, or every embedded browser page. It also does not give a supported app version, selection-length limit, or a list of regions.

The announcement does not state that a paid Gemini plan is required. Google’s descriptions of paid AI Pro and Ultra benefits are separate from the Simplify launch description, so they are not evidence that a subscription unlocks this feature. Nor does the announcement identify the exact AI model used.

Why Simplify might not appear
The launch announcement does not provide an official troubleshooting guide. If you do not see the control, these practical checks may help, but they are not confirmed fixes from Google:

If Simplify is unavailable, you can keep reading the original page or use another reading aid. Copying text into an AI assistant for an explanation is a separate workflow, not the Simplify feature.

A fluent rewrite can still lose a qualification, exception, or important distinction. For legal information, a change to words such as “may,” “unless,” or “subject to” can matter. Medical text can include dosage limits, contraindications, or uncertainty; financial pages can specify fees, rates, eligibility, and deadlines; technical instructions can depend on a prerequisite or safety warning. Academic writing may also rely on attribution or statistical caveats that a paraphrase does not preserve.

Use the simplified wording to help understand a passage, not as a substitute for the original when its exact language matters. Google warns that generative AI features in Search can make mistakes and recommends checking important information against multiple sources.
Google’s general Search documentation also says interactions with Search AI experiences, including searches and feedback, may be used to develop and improve generative-AI experiences. That is a general statement about Search AI experiences, not a Simplify-specific explanation of data retention.
