No. The iPhone 8 has no built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack. Its wired-audio connection is the Lightning port, so traditional headphones need a Lightning-to-3.5 mm audio adapter. “Unlocked” describes cellular-carrier status and does not change the phone’s ports or headphone compatibility.
What connector does the iPhone 8 have?
Apple’s iPhone 8 specifications list a Lightning connector and Lightning EarPods, not a 3.5 mm socket. The openings beside the Lightning port are speakers and microphones; they are not headphone connections. See Apple’s iPhone 8 technical specifications.
The iPhone 8 launched in 2017, after Apple had removed the traditional jack from the iPhone 7 generation. The result is straightforward: a normal plug cannot be inserted directly into the phone.
How to use ordinary wired headphones
- Insert the Lightning end of a Lightning-to-3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter into the iPhone 8.
- Plug your headphones’ 3.5 mm connector into the adapter’s headphone socket.
- Start playback. If audio remains on the speaker, open the app’s output control or Control Center and select the connected headphones.
Apple documents this connection method for Lightning iOS devices running iOS 10 or later: plug the adapter into the Lightning connector, then plug headphones into the adapter. The instructions are at Apple Support’s wired-headphone guide.

Choose an adapter designed for audio, preferably Apple or MFi-certified. A cable marketed merely as “3.5 mm to Lightning” may be intended for charging or data and may not contain the digital-to-analog hardware needed for headphone output. Compatibility with microphones, inline controls, high-impedance headphones and pass-through charging can vary by accessory.
Was the adapter included?
Apple’s original iPhone 8 retail specifications listed Lightning EarPods and a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter in the box. That describes the launch package, not every phone sold today. A used or refurbished handset may be missing both accessories, so check the seller’s actual “in the box” list.

Lightning EarPods
Apple EarPods with a Lightning Connector plug directly into the iPhone 8, with no dongle. Apple lists them as compatible with Lightning devices running iOS 10 or later, including iPhone 8. This is convenient if you want simple wired listening, but Lightning headphones are less reusable with newer USB-C phones and with devices that have a standard 3.5 mm socket.
3.5 mm EarPods and other headphones
They work through the Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter. The adapter supplies the connection the iPhone 8 lacks; the headphones themselves do not need to be Apple-branded.
Can you charge while listening?
A basic Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter occupies the iPhone 8’s only Lightning port, so it cannot provide ordinary wired audio and charging at the same time.

For simultaneous use, choose a genuine Lightning audio-and-charge adapter with separate Lightning and 3.5 mm ports. Do not confuse one with a charging-only splitter. Apple’s U.S. Store listed the Belkin 3.5 millimeter Audio + Charge Rockstar as compatible with iPhone 8 at $34.95 when checked in August 2026; see the Apple accessories listing. Third-party products can produce noise, dropouts or charging failures, particularly when uncertified or poorly made.
Bluetooth headphones are optional
Bluetooth headphones and earbuds work with the iPhone 8 and leave the Lightning port free for charging. They remove the cable and dongle, but add pairing and battery-management requirements. Wireless models can also cost more and may be less appealing if you want a battery-free, offline or very low-latency wired setup.

What “unlocked” means here
An unlocked iPhone 8 can use a compatible cellular carrier without the original carrier’s network restriction. Unlocking does not add a headphone socket, alter Lightning audio, or make a USB-C adapter work. Headphone compatibility is the same on locked and unlocked units.
Is an iPhone 8 still practical for wired audio?
Yes, the adapter and Lightning-headphone methods remain usable. The larger concern is the phone’s age. Apple lists iOS 16.7.13 for iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X dated January 26, 2026, while its newer iOS 26.2 release requires iPhone 11 or later. Check Apple’s security releases page for the current position, because release decisions can change.
Before buying a used unit, weigh battery health, activation-lock status, storage, cellular-band compatibility, app requirements and included accessories. Someone seeking a longer software-support horizon should consider a newer iPhone; someone mainly needing inexpensive wired playback can still use an iPhone 8 with the correct adapter.

Fixes when wired headphones do not work
- Verify that the accessory is a Lightning-to-3.5 mm audio adapter, not USB-C-to-3.5 mm or a charging-only cable.
- Disconnect and firmly reconnect both plugs.
- Try another known-good pair of headphones.
- Check the playback output selector and disconnect Bluetooth or AirPlay destinations that may be receiving audio.
- Inspect the Lightning port for lint or debris and clean it carefully without forcing anything into the contacts.
- Restart the iPhone and test the adapter again.
- If possible, test the adapter on another compatible Lightning device.
- Replace damaged or uncertified accessories. If multiple known-good adapters fail, the phone’s Lightning port may need service.

Used-iPhone 8 buying checklist
- Confirm the phone has its Lightning port and is not physically damaged.
- Ask whether a Lightning-to-3.5 mm audio adapter is included; do not assume the original box contents are present.
- If you need charging during listening, budget for an audio-and-charge adapter.
- Confirm carrier unlocking separately from accessory compatibility.
- Check battery health, activation lock, storage, supported cellular bands and the apps you need.
