Jeff Williams is the former chief operating officer of Apple. He joined Apple in 1998, helped build and run its global operations, contributed to the iPod and iPhone programs, led the Apple Watch effort and Apple’s health strategy, and later oversaw the design team. Apple transferred the COO role to Sabih Khan in July 2025; Williams retired from Apple later that year. As of August 18, 2026, he is a director of The Walt Disney Company. Education and IBM career
Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University and an MBA from Duke University. Before joining Apple, he held engineering and operational roles at IBM from 1985 to 1998. Official biographies do not provide a complete list of his individual IBM job titles or projects, so those details should not be inferred.

Joining Apple and rising through operations
Worldwide procurement
Williams joined Apple in 1998 as head of worldwide procurement. That position placed him at the center of the purchasing relationships and production network needed to make and deliver Apple products.
Vice president of operations
Apple promoted him to vice president of operations in 2004. His remit expanded across supply-chain management, manufacturing, logistics, product fulfillment, service and support, and supplier-responsibility programs.

The defensible description is that he helped lead and oversee these systems—not that he single-handedly created Apple’s entire supply chain.

His role in the iPod and iPhone programs
Apple says Williams played an important role in the iPod and iPhone programs. Disney’s account specifically credits him with an important role in the launch of the first iPhone in 2007.

These descriptions establish an operational and executive contribution. They do not show that Williams personally invented, designed or solely managed either product. Large launches depend on coordination among engineering, industrial design, software, manufacturing, suppliers, logistics and marketing.
Apple Watch and Apple’s health strategy
Leading the Apple Watch project
Williams began leading the Apple Watch project in 2013 and oversaw its development and launch. Apple and Disney describe him as responsible for the launch, but neither source presents him as the watch’s sole creator.

Expanding into health and fitness
Apple credited Williams with architecting its health strategy, while Disney described him as leading the company’s expansion into health and fitness. That strategy included the Apple Watch health ecosystem, fitness tracking, research-oriented initiatives and consumer access to personal health information.

Appointment as Apple COO
Williams became Apple’s COO in December 2015. He succeeded the role Tim Cook had held before becoming Apple CEO, which helped make Williams a natural focus of succession discussions.

As COO, Williams’ responsibilities included Apple’s global supply chain and product operations, planning, procurement, manufacturing, logistics, product fulfillment, service and support, supplier responsibility, Apple Watch and health initiatives. He also oversaw the design team during the latter part of his tenure.

Leadership of Apple’s design team
Disney says Williams began leading Apple’s design studio in 2019. Apple later said he had overseen the design team for several years.
This was executive oversight and coordination, not evidence that Williams personally authored Apple’s industrial designs or visual language. When he retired, Apple planned for the design team to report directly to Tim Cook. Apple presented that change as part of the planned organizational transition, not as a stated response to a design failure.

What he accomplished in supply chain and supplier responsibility
Williams’ most durable contribution was organizational: helping Apple operate a complex, international product system at enormous scale.
Rank #4
- Planning and procurement: coordinating demand, components and supplier capacity.
- Manufacturing and logistics: connecting factories, transportation and regional distribution.
- Product fulfillment: supporting launches and ongoing delivery to customers.
- Service and support: incorporating post-sale operations into the product system.
- Supplier responsibility: expanding worker training and education programs and working with suppliers on environmental initiatives and greener manufacturing.
Apple’s public statements support describing Williams as helping lead these systems. They do not provide a complete causal accounting assigning every operational decision or business result to him individually. Claims about exact effects on revenue, margins or particular product features therefore require separate evidence.

Was Jeff Williams going to become Apple CEO?
Technology coverage discussed Williams as a possible successor to Tim Cook because he held Cook’s former COO role, had long tenure, and combined operations experience with product, health and design oversight. That was speculation, not an announced succession plan.

Apple’s 2025 announcement instead established a planned COO succession to Sabih Khan and Williams’ retirement. His departure ended the possibility that he would later succeed Cook as CEO, but it does not prove that he had ever been formally designated as Cook’s successor.
For background on the succession discussion, see AppleInsider’s career overview; the company’s official transition is documented by Apple.

On July 8, 2025, Apple announced that Williams would transition out of the COO role later that month and that Sabih Khan would succeed him. Apple described the move as a long-planned succession. Williams temporarily continued overseeing design, Apple Watch and health initiatives before retiring later in 2025.
The dates matter: he left the COO position in July 2025, but the official Apple and Disney biographies do not establish an exact day on which he left Apple entirely. Calling him “Apple’s current COO” or saying he retired in July 2025 is therefore inaccurate.

Disney board role after Apple
Nomination and appointment
Disney nominated Williams as an independent director in December 2025 for consideration at its 2026 annual meeting. Disney’s governance materials now list him as a director since 2026.
Committee assignment
Disney lists Williams on its Compensation Committee. He is a board director, not an operating executive such as Disney’s CEO or COO.
Why his experience fits a board role
His background combines technology, consumer products, global operations, supply chains, product design oversight and brand-scale execution. Those are relevant to a company managing entertainment franchises, physical and digital products, and international businesses, while his board role does not imply day-to-day management of Disney.

Legacy
Williams’ record is best understood as a combination of operational scale and cross-functional product leadership. He helped Apple coordinate a global supply chain, supported major iPod and iPhone programs, led the Apple Watch effort, shaped the company’s health strategy and provided executive oversight of design. The evidence supports describing him as a senior leader who made complex launches and systems work at scale—not as the sole inventor of Apple products or the formally designated successor to Tim Cook.
