Discord’s Apple Silicon rollout began in Canary, its alpha testing channel—not as a separate Mac product. AppleInsider reported the M1-compatible test build on November 30, 2021; by March 22, 2022, AppleInsider reported native support in Discord’s regular macOS client. For everyday use, the historical Canary build is not the version users need to seek out.
What the November 2021 announcement meant
The AppleInsider Forums discussion reproduced a November 30, 2021 report about Discord making an Apple Silicon-compatible macOS build available through Discord Canary. The change let the desktop client run ARM64 code directly on Apple’s M1 Macs instead of relying on Rosetta 2 to translate an Intel build. The report described the start of a rollout, not a new standalone Discord application. Read AppleInsider’s original report or the forum discussion that reproduced it.
Canary is Discord’s alpha testing channel. It receives frequent updates and is less stable than the ordinary release; bugs and regressions are expected. It is a poor choice if you rely on Discord for work, classes, live broadcasts, or dependable voice calls. Canary should not be confused with Discord’s Public Test Build (PTB), a separate test channel.
How to get a test build—and when not to
In 2021, the report pointed readers to Discord’s testing-client page and said to select Discord Canary in the macOS section. Discord’s testing-client documentation is the appropriate place to check current test-channel options. That historical instruction is not a reason to install Canary for ordinary M-series Mac use: native support later reached the regular client.
#1 Best Overall
- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
- 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
- 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
- For normal use, download Discord’s regular macOS client rather than choosing a test channel.
- Choose Canary only if you specifically want to try unreleased changes and can tolerate instability.
- If you keep both clients, give them clearly distinct names or Dock positions so you do not mistake the test build for the stable app.
The 2021 report does not establish a Canary build number, minimum macOS version, file size, or checksum. It also does not show that Canary was more compatible in every respect simply because it supported Apple Silicon.
What “native” means for Discord on a Mac
“Native” here describes processor architecture, not how the whole application was written. Discord remained Electron-based: Electron is the cross-platform framework behind its desktop client. Apple Silicon support means the relevant build could execute ARM64 code on an M-series processor without Rosetta translating an Intel-only application. It does not mean Discord became an app written entirely with Apple’s native macOS frameworks.

| Build type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Intel | Compiled for Intel processors; on an Apple Silicon Mac it needs Rosetta 2 translation. |
| Apple Silicon | Includes ARM64 code that runs directly on Apple Silicon Macs. |
| Universal or dual-binary | Contains code for both Intel and Apple Silicon, so one app package can support either Mac architecture. |
Native execution can avoid translation overhead, but the available reporting provides no controlled measurements of Discord’s speed, battery use, CPU load, or memory consumption. Results depend on the app’s components and what is limiting performance; native support does not guarantee a fix for network, audio, screen-sharing, peripheral, or macOS problems.
What AppleInsider observed during testing
AppleInsider reported that its testing of the Canary build produced repeated microphone and camera permission requests, while it observed no show-stopping bugs at that time. In its March 2022 follow-up, it said the prompts could still recur in the regular native client. These are observations from AppleInsider’s testing, not evidence that every user encountered the issue or that it persists in current versions. The follow-up report describes the later release.

If Discord repeatedly asks for access, check the relevant macOS privacy controls under System Settings > Privacy & Security, including Microphone, Camera, and Screen & System Audio Recording when those features are involved. Permission problems can also involve a peripheral, driver, or macOS behavior; switching processor architectures alone may not resolve them. If a Canary installation is disrupting use, quit it and open the regular client. Remove the test app and reinstall the stable one if needed, taking care not to delete the wrong application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When native support reached the regular client
On March 22, 2022, AppleInsider reported that Apple Silicon support had reached Discord’s normal macOS client. The report described a dual-binary build for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and said existing installations appeared to update in place. That date is the publication date of the report, not proof that every user worldwide received the update on that exact day. The important practical change is that users no longer needed to stay on Canary to get the native architecture support described in the 2021 story.
Check the architecture of your installed copy
- In Finder, open Applications.
- Control-click or right-click Discord and choose Get Info.
- Look for the Kind field. Depending on the macOS version and package, it may identify the app as Apple Silicon, Universal, or Intel.
The exact wording can vary by macOS version. Apple’s U.S. Mac App Store also lists Discord for Mac, but the listing alone does not establish that every current download uses the same package format as the 2022 release: Discord on the Mac App Store.
Quick Recap
Who should use Canary?
- Consider it if you want to test unreleased fixes or features, can accept bugs, and are willing to report problems.
- Skip it if you depend on Discord for reliable calls, streaming, school, work, or hardware setups that cannot tolerate interruption—or if your only goal is native performance on an M-series Mac.
