Short answer: Microsoft Teams audio and video optimization is supported across Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), Windows 365, Citrix, and Omnissa Horizon, but that does not make their Teams experiences identical. The endpoint operating system, connection client, Teams build, optimization components, policies, and network all affect what works. The most important update to the September 15, 2022 HTMD comparison is the move from legacy WebRTC optimization toward Microsoft’s SlimCore-based VDI solution—and the approaching retirement of WebRTC for specified Windows endpoint scenarios.
This comparison reflects Microsoft documentation and announcements available on August 18, 2026. Treat the original HTMD feature table as a historical baseline, not a current capability matrix. Microsoft’s current documentation names Omnissa Horizon; “VMware Horizon” remains a familiar search term but is no longer the current provider name.
At a glance: how the platforms differ
| Platform | Teams optimization model | Operational fit | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Azure Virtual Desktop | Microsoft Teams VDI optimization using SlimCore, with legacy WebRTC relevant during the transition | Microsoft-native flexibility, including Windows 10/11 multi-session | Administrators must validate the image, Windows App/client, optimization components, and configuration. |
| Windows 365 | Shares Microsoft’s Teams audio/video optimization model with AVD | Cloud PCs with Microsoft gallery images that include required optimization components | Custom images still need validation; provisioning and licensing differ from AVD. |
| Citrix DaaS or CVAD | Citrix-supported optimization plus Microsoft’s newer VDI stack | Organizations using Citrix delivery, policy, and hybrid-management capabilities | Workspace app, VDA, virtual channels, policies, and Teams components must align. |
| Omnissa Horizon | Microsoft Teams VDI optimization with a separate Horizon client and agent path | Organizations already standardized on Horizon | Validate the specific Horizon client, agent, endpoint type, and configuration; do not assume AVD parity. |
| Browser access | Not equivalent to optimization through a supported native VDI client | Fallback access, including some unmanaged-device scenarios | Microsoft says browsers do not support optimization in the same way as supported native clients. |
Microsoft lists AVD, Windows 365, Citrix, Omnissa Horizon, and Amazon WorkSpaces as certified for Teams audio/video optimization. Certification does not establish identical support for every Teams feature or endpoint combination. See Microsoft’s Teams VDI requirements.
Why Teams optimization matters in a virtual desktop
Teams runs within the hosted desktop session, but optimized audio and video should not normally be processed entirely inside the remote VM. With optimization, the VDI session and local endpoint cooperate: media can be handled through the endpoint rather than consuming the hosted desktop’s resources for the entire media workload. Microsoft describes the Windows 365 model as enabling peer-to-peer audio/video streaming and direct endpoint rendering. This is different from ordinary device redirection and from general remote-display protocol tuning.

- SUPPORT WORK FROM ANYWHERE WITH SYNC: Whether employees are in the office, at home, or somewhere else, Sync device management software helps everyone stay connected by letting you ensure their Logitech video collaboration personal devices are being used and up to date.
- Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
- Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
- On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
- Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.
- Device redirection makes a local microphone, camera, or other device available to a remote session. By itself, that does not prove Teams media is optimized.
- Media optimization uses a provider-supported path so calls and meetings do not rely solely on server-side media processing.
- Supported or certified describes the documented provider or configuration scope; it does not mean every endpoint, feature, policy, or version behaves identically.
- Fallback may keep a session usable when optimization is unavailable, but can change media quality and increase resource use. Verify the actual media path instead of assuming the user is optimized.
The newer SlimCore-based solution is generally available for AVD and Windows 365, with separate minimum version requirements for Citrix and Omnissa Horizon. It brings Teams closer to a physical-PC experience, but does not remove VDI-specific endpoint and policy constraints. Microsoft’s overview of the transition is at New VDI solution for Teams on AVD and Windows 365.
What changed since the 2022 HTMD comparison
The HTMD comparison published September 15, 2022 predates the current SlimCore-based architecture, the Omnissa name, and Microsoft’s announced WebRTC retirement dates. Its feature table can help explain what administrators compared at the time, but should not be used as a 2026 deployment guarantee.
For Windows endpoints connecting to AVD, Windows 365, or Citrix, Microsoft says legacy WebRTC optimization reaches end of support on October 1, 2026, then end of availability on April 1, 2027. After availability ends, a session that cannot use the newer optimization stack may fall back to server-side media processing. The announcement’s stated scope does not extend those dates to macOS, Linux, mobile, HTML5, ChromeOS, or Omnissa scenarios. Check the scope in Microsoft’s WebRTC transition announcement.
Compare Teams features without assuming parity
Microsoft’s provider certification establishes an audio/video optimization framework, not a universal yes/no answer for every Teams capability. For feature planning, distinguish whether a capability is part of Teams from whether it is optimized or validated in a particular VDI configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Teams capability | What can be concluded across these platforms | What to validate in your environment |
|---|---|---|
| Chat and presence | Part of the Teams client experience; the cited VDI certification does not establish provider-specific chat parity. | Client support, sign-in, policy, and the user’s Teams build. |
| One-to-one and group audio/video calls; meetings | Audio/video optimization is certified for the named providers, subject to supported configurations. | Endpoint, client and optimization versions; call quality and fallback behavior. |
| Screen sharing and application sharing | Do not infer identical behavior from audio/video certification alone. | Sharing mode, capture permissions, endpoint support, monitors, and workload. |
| Give or take control | Not verified as a uniform provider-wide capability by the cited certification. | Teams version, meeting context, policy, and end-to-end user workflow. |
| Background effects | Not verified as a uniform provider-wide capability. | Endpoint and optimization support, performance, and the specific effect. |
| Live captions, transcription, recording, and breakout rooms | These depend on Teams features and tenant policies; VDI certification alone does not confirm parity. | Licensing where applicable, meeting policy, compliance controls, and the required user roles. |
| PSTN and emergency calling | Not established as equivalent across providers by the cited optimization documentation. | Calling policy, telephony configuration, endpoint location, and emergency-calling procedures. |
| Headset/HID controls, secondary ringer, multiple windows and pop-outs | Not verified as universal VDI capabilities. | Teams build, local device, endpoint client, and provider-specific support. |
| Linux thin clients, mobile clients, and browser access | Support varies by endpoint and connection method; browser use is not the same optimized-native-client model. | Exact endpoint OS and client release, device permissions, and provider guidance. |
For workloads that depend on screen sharing, Microsoft notes that sharing can escalate media from a peer-to-peer call to a group call. High-frame-rate video sharing can increase CPU usage. Its optional MaxFPS registry setting accepts values from 1 to 15, but Microsoft describes it as an advanced, scenario-specific tuning option—not a default fix. Results vary with VM size, workload, GPU acceleration, monitor resolution, and encoding method. Details: Teams optimization for VDI.
AVD: Teams requirements and image checks
AVD offers Microsoft-native integration and supports Windows 10/11 multi-session, but its flexibility comes with image and host-pool responsibilities. Microsoft’s requirements page lists Windows App for Windows version 2.0.360.0 or later and WebRTC Redirector Service 1.54.2408.19001 among requirements for the documented paths. These are version signals from that documentation, not a recommendation to freeze deployments at those versions. The newer SlimCore path has its own component requirements; use Microsoft’s current deployment guidance for the selected architecture.

For the newer VDI solution, Microsoft lists Teams version 24193.1805.3040.8975 or later for AVD and Windows 365. For a custom AVD image, confirm that New Teams and the applicable optimization component are installed, that the endpoint client supports the intended architecture, and that required prerequisites are present. Windows 365 gallery images include required optimization components; AVD administrators may need to install and configure them.
The registry value below belongs to Microsoft’s documented legacy AVD/Windows 365 optimization path. It is not a universal SlimCore troubleshooting fix:

Name: IsWVDEnvironment
Type: DWORD
Value: 1
After installation or first sign-in, restart Teams; signing out and back in may also be needed to activate optimization. See Teams on Azure Virtual Desktop and the current VDI requirements.
Windows 365: a simpler image path, not identical operations
Windows 365 uses the same underlying Microsoft Teams audio/video optimization model as AVD. Microsoft says Windows 365 gallery images come preconfigured with the required components, reducing setup work compared with building and maintaining a custom image. A custom image still needs the same deliberate checks for Teams, optimization components, endpoint client compatibility, policies, and media-path validation.
Microsoft’s requirements page lists Windows App for macOS 11.3.4 or later, iOS/iPadOS 11.2.5, and Android 11.0.0.78 for WebRTC-based optimization. The same page lists Windows App for Windows 2.0.360.0 or later and WebRTC Redirector Service 1.54.2408.19001 for relevant documented paths. Because these are WebRTC-era signals and the architecture is changing, check the latest endpoint requirements for SlimCore before rollout rather than treating these values as universal current minimums.
Windows 365 Enterprise also has a licensing prerequisite: Windows Enterprise, Intune, and Entra ID P1 entitlements are required, though Microsoft says qualifying Microsoft 365 suites may include them. Licensing is separate from Teams optimization. Review Teams on Windows 365 Cloud PCs and Microsoft’s Windows 365 plans and pricing.

Citrix: coordinate the two sides of the session
Citrix Teams optimization traditionally uses a Workspace app-side media engine alongside VDA-side integration. The current environment may also need Microsoft’s newer VDI stack. For that newer solution, Microsoft lists Teams version 24295.605.3225.8804 or later for Citrix and calls out configuring the virtual-channel allow list.
Do not treat “Citrix” as a single configuration. Citrix DaaS and on-premises Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD) have different control planes, and Windows 365 integration is another distinct scenario. Check the specific Workspace app, VDA, virtual channels, policies, endpoint device support, and Teams build together. Citrix’s delivery and hybrid-management capabilities may suit an established Citrix estate, but they add components that must remain compatible. Microsoft’s platform-specific minimums and requirements are in its new VDI solution documentation.
Omnissa Horizon: use the current provider-specific path
Microsoft now identifies Omnissa Horizon as a Teams optimization provider. The newer VDI documentation lists Teams version 26032.206.4355.6508 or later for Omnissa; for the documented generally available optimization path on Windows, it lists Horizon Client 8.17 (2512) or later. These are minimums from Microsoft’s documentation, not long-term pinning recommendations.
Horizon has its own client, agent, policy, and media-redirection requirements. Validate the endpoint operating system—Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, mobile, or HTML5—and the precise Horizon configuration. Microsoft’s Teams certification does not certify every broader Horizon feature or prove parity with AVD. Start with Microsoft’s Teams VDI version guidance and the current provider requirements.
Version and deployment checklist
Minimum versions below are those listed in Microsoft documentation available on August 18, 2026. They are checkpoints, not recommended targets to pin indefinitely; validate current support before deployment.

| Omnissa Teams for new VDI solution | Teams 26032.206.4355.6508 or later | Microsoft minimum listed for the newer solution. |
| Omnissa Horizon Client on Windows | 8.17 (2512) or later | For the documented generally available optimization path. |
| Windows App for Windows | 2.0.360.0 or later | Listed in Microsoft’s cited requirements; check the selected optimization architecture. |
| Windows App for macOS | 11.3.4 or later | Listed for the documented requirements path. |
| Windows App for iOS/iPadOS; Android | 11.2.5; 11.0.0.78 | Listed for WebRTC-based optimization, not a blanket SlimCore guarantee. |
| WebRTC Redirector Service | 1.54.2408.19001 | Version signal for the documented WebRTC path. |
- Identify the exact combination. Record provider, desktop type, endpoint OS, and connection method—not just the provider name.
- Update Teams and the endpoint client. Use the provider-specific requirements for the intended optimization architecture, then prefer current supported releases over bare minimums.
- Confirm the server-side components. Check the VDI image, agent or redirector, and any provider-specific virtual-channel configuration. For Citrix, check the virtual-channel allow list for the newer stack.
- Review user and device policy. Ensure optimization and the needed camera, microphone, screen capture, recording, and calling permissions are not blocked.
- Restart and verify. Restart Teams after installation; sign out and back in if needed. Confirm the session reports optimization rather than assuming that device redirection proves it.
- Exercise real workflows. Test microphone, camera, speaker, headset controls, incoming calls, meetings, and screen sharing with the endpoint types users actually rely on.
- Test failure and roaming cases. Deliberately test an older or unsupported endpoint, plugin-unavailable behavior, and any switching between endpoint types. Record whether media falls back and how the user experience changes.
Endpoint and browser considerations
The provider alone does not determine feature availability. Windows App, Citrix Workspace app, and Horizon Client have separate release and platform support paths. Linux thin clients and browser-based connections require particular care: the cited Microsoft requirements say web browsers do not support Teams optimization in the same model as supported native clients. Do not promise optimized calls merely because Teams opens successfully in a browser.

For each endpoint fleet, record the operating system and client version, local camera and microphone permissions, and whether the connection is native or browser-based. Verify the actual Teams media path per combination. A working chat session, redirected camera, or successful meeting join is not by itself proof that the intended optimized path is active.

For Windows endpoints connecting to AVD, Windows 365, and Citrix, the October 1, 2026 support deadline and April 1, 2027 availability deadline make architecture inventory time-sensitive. Identify sessions still using WebRTC, test the current SlimCore path with representative endpoint clients, and complete rollout before availability ends. Keep the scope precise: Microsoft’s announcement gives these dates for those Windows endpoint scenarios; it does not state the same deadlines for macOS, Linux, mobile, HTML5, ChromeOS, or Omnissa.

- Inventory Teams, endpoint client, and VDI component versions together.
- Confirm which optimization architecture each supported user and endpoint combination actually uses.
- Update non-persistent images and deployment workflows so refreshed desktops do not lose optimization components.
- Test an optimization failure so support teams know whether the session remains usable and what fallback users experience.
- Validate calling and emergency-calling behavior against the user’s real endpoint location, not only the hosted desktop’s location.
Troubleshoot by proving the media path
Start with the affected user’s exact provider, endpoint OS and client, Teams version, and optimization architecture. Then check that Teams and the required endpoint and VDI components are compatible, the local microphone and camera permissions are granted, provider virtual channels or policies are not blocking the path, and Teams has been restarted after changes. Compare a working endpoint with the failing one rather than changing unrelated image settings.
For Windows 365 Cloud PC Teams issues, Microsoft documents this log path:
%appdata%MicrosoftTeamslogs.txt
For Teams web-client call and meeting logs, Microsoft documents the shortcut Ctrl + Alt + Shift + 1. These are collection methods, not a complete diagnosis. See Microsoft’s Windows 365 Teams guidance.
If screen sharing is the specific problem, separate capture permissions and sharing behavior from camera/microphone optimization. Microsoft’s optional MaxFPS DWORD can be set under HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftTeamsVMSS or HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftTeamsVMSS, with a value from 1 to 15. Treat it as advanced tuning only after confirming the issue and testing the workload: monitor resolution, VM size, GPU acceleration, and encoding affect results. Guidance is in Microsoft’s VDI optimization documentation.

Which platform fits your organization?
Choose AVD for Microsoft-native flexibility
AVD is a natural fit when an organization already operates Azure and Microsoft 365, needs pooled multi-session Windows, and can manage host pools, images, profiles, identity, networking, scaling, and monitoring. Its control and flexibility also mean more platform operations; the cost model includes Azure compute, storage, networking, profile services, licensing, and support rather than a single per-user desktop charge. Product details: Azure Virtual Desktop.
Choose Windows 365 for managed Cloud PCs
Windows 365 suits organizations that value predictable dedicated Cloud PCs and simpler provisioning over pooled-desktop control. Gallery images simplify the Teams optimization setup, but Windows Enterprise, Intune, Entra ID P1, and other applicable entitlements still matter. A carefully tuned pooled AVD design can be more economical for some workloads; that is not a universal price comparison and needs a normalized cost model.
Choose Citrix when its delivery capabilities are already valuable
Citrix can be a strong fit for estates that need its application delivery, policy control, hybrid access, endpoint handling, or existing operational expertise. The trade-off is maintaining compatibility across Citrix Cloud or CVAD, VDA, Workspace app, policies, Teams, and Microsoft’s optimization components. See Citrix DaaS.
Choose Omnissa Horizon for an established Horizon estate
Horizon fits organizations that already rely on its EUC platform, operational tooling, and skills. Teams optimization should be validated for the exact Horizon client/agent versions and endpoints rather than inferred from Microsoft-native deployments. See Omnissa Horizon.

Quick Recap
Deployment questions to settle before rollout
- Which optimization architecture is active for each user and endpoint: SlimCore, WebRTC, or fallback?
- Are the required business features actually tested on the endpoint and client combinations in use?
- Do calling and meeting policies match the organization’s requirements for virtual users?
- Are emergency-calling rules valid for the user’s physical endpoint location?
- Do recording, captions, and transcript workflows meet tenant policy and compliance requirements?
- Do thin-client and remote-worker endpoint fleets have a supported native client path?
- What will users experience if the optimization plugin or virtual channel is unavailable?
- Are Windows endpoint deployments for AVD, Windows 365, and Citrix ready for the October 1, 2026 support date and April 1, 2027 availability date?
