Copilot on Windows 11 is Microsoft’s AI assistant app, accessible from Windows but not a universal control panel for the operating system. It can help with questions, drafts, summaries, research, images, voice interaction, and selected file, screen, and Windows-support tasks. Which features you see depends on factors such as your account, region, permissions, device, and Microsoft’s rollout. A free baseline experience is available; Microsoft 365 app integrations and higher usage limits are separate.
What does “Copilot in Windows 11” mean?
Copilot on Windows is a cloud-connected conversational assistant with Windows entry points. It is generally available as an app on Windows 11 PCs, rather than one fixed sidebar embedded throughout the operating system. You can ask it questions, request help with writing or research, and use certain Windows-specific capabilities when they are available to your account and device. Microsoft’s current overview describes the app and its available entry points at Getting started with Copilot on Windows.
The word “Copilot” also names related but distinct products. Installing or opening the Windows app does not give you every Microsoft 365 feature, nor does it make a computer a Copilot+ PC.
| Product | What it is | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Copilot on Windows | The consumer Copilot app and Windows entry points. | General AI assistance plus selected Windows-related features, with availability dependent on account, region, permissions, and rollout. |
| Microsoft Copilot on the web | The general-purpose Copilot experience in a browser. | Access to Copilot outside Windows; feature parity with the Windows app is not guaranteed. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | Copilot capabilities integrated into Microsoft 365 apps and, in work settings, organizational workflows. | Account, subscription, app, and organizational controls differ from the consumer Windows app. See Microsoft’s guide to accessing Microsoft 365 Copilot on Windows. |
| Copilot+ PC features | Windows AI experiences associated with compatible hardware, including a neural processing unit. | These are not the same as the Copilot app; individual features can have hardware, language, region, and rollout requirements. See Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC overview. |
Microsoft’s current consumer access overview explains where Copilot is available and how Microsoft 365 subscriptions add app capabilities: Where you can access Copilot.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
How do you open Copilot?
On many Windows 11 PCs, the Copilot app is already installed and may be pinned to the taskbar or available in Start. Microsoft documents these ways to launch it:
- Select Copilot on the taskbar.
- Open Start and select or search for Copilot.
- Press the Copilot key on a supported keyboard.
- Press Windows key + C. Depending on configuration, this can open the full app or a smaller quick view.
- Say “Hey Copilot” if you have enabled the opt-in wake-word feature and it is available to you.
The Copilot key is not found on every keyboard, and Microsoft says its availability varies by market. Shortcut behavior and settings can also change with app updates. To check the documented controls, open Copilot and go to Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts; choose the available behavior for the key or Windows + C. If the app is missing, consult Microsoft’s Windows Copilot setup guidance.
What can Copilot do on Windows?
Chat, writing, research, and image creation
You can ask questions, brainstorm, explain concepts, draft or rewrite text, summarize material, translate, research a topic, and create images. Signed-in users may also have conversation history. Treat the result as assistance rather than an authoritative answer: Copilot can be incomplete, outdated, or wrong, even when its wording sounds confident.
Voice interaction
Copilot supports voice interaction where available. “Hey Copilot” is an opt-in wake word, not a requirement for using the app. Language and feature availability can vary. In shared spaces, consider who can hear your request before speaking personal or confidential details.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Copilot Vision
Copilot Vision can interpret supported browser windows or applications and offer explanations or step-by-step guidance about what is on screen. It must be invoked or enabled, and the supported contexts and regional availability vary; Microsoft currently identifies Vision on Windows as available in the United States through the Copilot app. It is not a promise that Copilot can understand or operate every application. Check its interpretation yourself, particularly for security-sensitive content or accessibility-critical tasks.
File search and file reading
Depending on permissions and availability, Copilot can help locate files, open them, or answer questions about their contents, including locally synchronized OneDrive files. These are distinct levels of access: finding a filename does not mean reading the document, and asking for a summary entails using its contents. Do not assume Copilot can read every file by default.
To manage the relevant controls, open Copilot and go to Account > Settings > File Search and File Read. Allow only the access you need. A request involving file contents may send relevant information to Microsoft’s online AI service, so consider the sensitivity of the document before asking.
Web content beside a conversation
Copilot can display web content in a side pane beside a conversation. With your permission, it may use context from tabs opened within that conversation. Microsoft notes that tabs opened there can be saved with the conversation. Avoid exposing sensitive account pages, private messages, or confidential work content through this feature.

Windows Settings guidance
Copilot can help you find a setting or explain a route through Windows, for example by responding to “Where do I change display scaling?” or “How do I turn on Focus?” Think of this as guided assistance, not unrestricted administrative control. Confirm the setting and its effect in Windows before changing it. Copilot does not replace Windows Search, Settings, Control Panel, Task Manager, Device Manager, or an administrator’s troubleshooting process.
PC insights: experimental and permission-based
PC insights is an opt-in experimental feature whose availability may vary. It can answer certain questions about device state, such as CPU usage, printer status, or whether a webcam is detected. Microsoft says Copilot asks permission, which may be granted for a session or similar requests, and that permission can later be revoked. Its details are in Microsoft’s PC insights documentation. Do not treat an experimental capability as a guaranteed diagnostic tool.
What are the advantages of Copilot?
- Natural-language help: It may be quicker to describe what you need than to know the exact name of a Windows option.
- Useful first drafts: Drafting, rewriting, summarizing, and brainstorming can save time when you review and edit the output.
- Contextual assistance: Vision and file features can reduce the amount of background you need to type, when you choose to grant access.
- Potential accessibility benefits: Voice requests, visual explanations, and simpler descriptions may help some people navigate tasks. They are not guaranteed to interpret content correctly.
- Continuity across devices: A signed-in Copilot experience can make conversation history available across Windows, web, mobile, and Microsoft services, though exact features can differ by platform.
What are the disadvantages and risks?
Answers need checking
Copilot can misunderstand a request, misread screen content, summarize a file inaccurately, or recommend a setting that does not fit your situation. Verify technical commands before running them and confirm settings manually. For consequential medical, legal, financial, security, or workplace decisions, use authoritative sources and qualified people rather than relying on generated output.
Cloud dependence and changing availability
Many consumer Copilot functions depend on Microsoft’s online services, account systems, models, and regional rollout. Do not assume the ordinary Copilot app works offline like a locally running model. Features, entry points, and limits can change; Microsoft notes that functionality is subject to change in its availability information.

Privacy exposure
Screen contents, browser tabs, file names and contents, voice requests, and conversation history can all be sensitive. Permission controls reduce or define access for particular features, but they do not remove the need to choose carefully what you share. Shared conversation links deserve particular care: Microsoft says anyone with the link can access a shared conversation, so review it before distributing one. See Microsoft’s Copilot privacy and consumer information.
Subscriptions and workflow friction
The free baseline assistant is not the same as Copilot inside Microsoft 365 apps or a higher-tier consumer plan. Usage limits, integrations, or features may prompt a subscription. Some users may also find the taskbar presence, keyboard key, wake word, notifications, or suggestions distracting. On some keyboards the Copilot key replaces a key such as Right Ctrl or the context-menu key, which can disrupt familiar workflows.
Work and school accounts require separate consideration
Consumer Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot for work or school are not interchangeable. Organizational identity, data handling, retention, compliance, and administrator controls need to be assessed under the relevant organization’s policies. Administrators can consult Microsoft’s Windows Copilot management documentation; employees should ask IT before using consumer AI with confidential work material.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Copilot free, or do you need a subscription?
Microsoft offers a free baseline Copilot experience for general assistance. Microsoft 365 subscriptions add Copilot capabilities in eligible applications, subject to account, app, language, and usage conditions; Microsoft 365 Premium is described as offering higher usage limits and additional features. A subscription is not required simply to try basic Windows Copilot. Compare current inclusions on Microsoft’s consumer Copilot page and access and availability page; feature entitlements can change.

If you only want occasional chat or help locating a Windows setting, start with the free experience. Consider a paid plan when you specifically need Microsoft 365 app integration or the higher limits and bundled services it offers. A Copilot+ PC purchase is a separate hardware decision, not a prerequisite for ordinary Copilot chat.
Ordinary Windows 11 PC or Copilot+ PC?
| Question | Ordinary Windows 11 PC | Copilot+ PC |
|---|---|---|
| Can it run the Copilot app? | Generally yes, subject to software, account, and regional requirements. | Yes, subject to the same service and account considerations. |
| Is a Copilot keyboard key guaranteed? | No; it depends on the keyboard. | No; it still depends on the keyboard. |
| Does it receive every AI feature? | No; some capabilities depend on hardware or other conditions. | No; individual features still depend on hardware, language, region, and rollout. |
| Does it include Microsoft 365 Copilot? | No, not automatically. | No, not automatically. |
| Is local AI processing guaranteed for every Copilot task? | No. | No. Compatible hardware enables selected local Windows AI features, not every Copilot interaction. |
Microsoft describes Copilot+ PC experiences separately from the general Copilot app in its Windows AI feature overview. If your current PC only needs the ordinary app, buying new hardware solely for Copilot may not be worthwhile.
How can you limit Copilot access or change how it opens?
Change keyboard behavior
- Open the Copilot app.
- Select Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Choose the available behavior for the Copilot key or Windows + C, such as opening the full app or quick view.
Options vary by app version and device. If the control is absent, check for app updates or use Start to open Copilot instead.
Review file permissions
- Open Copilot and select Account > Settings.
- Open File Search and File Read.
- Turn off access you do not need.
- For PC insights requests, read the permission prompt carefully; deny access or revoke it later if you no longer want it.
Revisit these controls after major app or feature changes, especially if you use shared or sensitive files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should you do if Copilot gives a wrong answer or cannot complete a task?
- Rephrase the request and include the exact name of the Windows setting, app, or device involved.
- Ask for navigation steps or an explanation rather than assuming Copilot can perform the change.
- Check your Windows edition, account type, device model, and whether the feature is available in your region.
- Install available Windows and Microsoft Store app updates.
- Use Windows Settings, Search, Help, or Microsoft Support directly when you need a dependable route.
- On a managed work or school PC, follow your organization’s IT policy.
- Do not run a command or registry edit solely because Copilot suggested it; understand and verify it first.
Who should use Copilot?
Copilot is a reasonable fit if you want occasional help drafting, summarizing, researching, brainstorming, or finding your way around Windows—and are willing to review the result. Voice and screen-aware features may also be useful if their availability and privacy trade-offs suit you.
It may be a poor fit if your work involves highly confidential or regulated data, you need deterministic offline behavior, you want precise system administration, your organization restricts cloud AI, or AI prompts and entry points distract you. In those cases, use traditional Windows tools or an organization-approved assistant for the relevant task.
