Microsoft Edge administrators can enable Enable preload of the new tab page for faster rendering (NewTabPagePrerenderEnabled) from an Intune Settings Catalog profile. The policy lets Edge load its built-in Start and New Tab experience before a user requests it, which can reduce perceived waiting time but may increase CPU, memory, network, and battery use.
What the policy does
Preloading loads resources for Edge’s built-in New Tab experience ahead of the user’s action. Microsoft calls the mechanism prerender in the policy identifier, while the administrator-facing setting uses “preload.” It targets the built-in New Tab page; it is not a setting for every website or a guarantee of faster browser performance.
The result depends on hardware, network conditions, extensions, startup state, and New Tab content. Test representative devices before enforcing it broadly.

When enforced as a mandatory policy, users cannot change the setting. If it is not configured, Microsoft documents preloading as enabled by default while allowing users to change the browser setting. A recommended/default deployment can preserve that user control where the management method supports it.
Prerequisites
- Windows devices enrolled in Microsoft Intune through an appropriate management channel.
- Microsoft Edge installed and managed on the target devices.
- A Microsoft Entra ID user or device group for assignment; use a pilot group first.
- An Intune administrator with at least the Policy and Profile Manager role.
- A current Intune Settings Catalog that exposes Microsoft Edge administrative settings.
Microsoft’s setup references are Configure Microsoft Edge policy settings with Intune, Create a policy using Settings Catalog, and Deploy Microsoft Edge policy using Settings Catalog.

Configure the policy in Intune
1. Create a Settings Catalog profile
- Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Go to Devices > Manage devices > Configuration.
- Select Create > New policy.
- Choose Platform: Windows 10 and later.
- Choose Profile type: Settings catalog, then select Create.
- Name the profile, for example
Edge - Enable New Tab Page Preloading. Add a description containing the policy identifier if useful.
2. Add the Edge setting
- On Configuration settings, select Add settings.
- Search the full catalog for
NewTabPagePrerenderEnabledor Enable preload of the new tab page for faster rendering. - Select Microsoft Edge. If shown, open Startup, home page and new tab page.
- Select the setting and set it to Enabled, then select Next.
Portal labels and category placement can change. If the setting is not visible in the expected category, search the entire catalog by identifier. Filtering the catalog to a particular Windows edition can hide Edge settings.
3. Assign a pilot
- Configure scope tags if your organization uses them.
- On Assignments, include a small Entra user or device pilot group.
- Exclude test systems that must retain local control.
- Select Next.
4. Review and create
- Confirm the policy is enabled and the assignment group is correct.
- Select Create.
- Allow the devices to check in. Restart Edge after policy delivery if it was already open.
Verify that Edge received the policy
- On a targeted Windows device, open Microsoft Edge.
- Go to
edge://policy. - Search for
NewTabPagePrerenderEnabled. - Confirm the value is
true(or otherwise shown as enabled), the status has no error, and the source is the expected management channel when displayed. - Refresh the policy page and restart Edge if it was running during check-in.
Microsoft describes edge://policy as the place to inspect applied Edge policies; see Configure Microsoft Edge policy settings on Windows devices. For a meaningful performance comparison, record Edge and Windows versions, device model and memory, power state, network conditions, New Tab layout, and CPU, memory, and network observations before and after deployment.

Decide whether to enforce it
Good candidates
- Users frequently start Edge or open new tabs.
- Devices have adequate CPU and memory capacity.
- The standard New Tab page is widely used.
- A pilot shows lower perceived wait time without unacceptable resource use.
Use caution or avoid broad enforcement
- Older or low-memory devices run many applications and tabs.
- Battery life, bandwidth, or startup CPU activity is tightly constrained.
- The organization uses a heavily customized New Tab experience.
- Users report fan noise, battery drain, memory pressure, or startup contention.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|
| Setting is missing from Intune | Confirm Windows 10 and later plus Settings catalog, search the entire catalog by NewTabPagePrerenderEnabled, remove restrictive edition filters, and verify the tenant catalog is current. |
| Profile is assigned but no policy appears | Verify group membership, device enrollment and health, recent Intune check-in, policy conflicts, and an Edge restart. Refresh edge://policy. |
| Another policy wins or reports conflict | Find overlapping Edge Settings Catalog, App Configuration, Group Policy, or other management-channel settings. Avoid targeting the same client with conflicting definitions; Microsoft discusses this in Settings Catalog for Microsoft Edge for Business. |
| Users see no difference | Preloading only affects the relevant startup/New Tab path. Compare the same device class, Edge version, network, extensions, and New Tab configuration rather than assuming deployment failed. |
| Resource use increases | Temporarily disable the policy, measure CPU, memory, network, and battery behavior, review other startup/New Tab policies, narrow the assignment, or use a recommended/default approach. |
Rollback
- Edit the profile and set the policy to Disabled, or remove the setting.
- Alternatively, unassign the profile or exclude affected users and devices.
- Wait for Intune check-in, then refresh
edge://policyand restart Edge. - Confirm the policy is disabled or absent before judging the rollback.

Bottom line
Use an Intune Windows 10 and later Settings Catalog profile to enable NewTabPagePrerenderEnabled, assign it to a pilot, and verify it at edge://policy. Treat it as a measured responsiveness optimization—not a universal speed fix—and keep a rollback path for devices where the additional resource use outweighs the benefit.
