Moto G85 Launched Under the Shadow of Motorola’s 2024 Foldables

Motorola’s Moto G85 5G arrived in late June 2024 as a conventional mid-range phone, just as the company’s Razr 50 foldables were drawing attention with large outer screens and a more dramatic form factor. The G85 was overshadowed in the launch conversation, but it was not a direct rival to the Razr: it aimed to bring a premium-looking curved display and everyday practicality to buyers spending far less.

Two Motorola launches, different jobs

Motorola announced the Moto G85 5G on June 25–26, 2024, with availability beginning in Europe and India and a rollout planned for selected Latin American, Middle Eastern and Asian markets. Motorola’s support record also lists June 2024 as the launch month. The Razr 50 family was announced in the same late-June period. That overlap created a collision for attention, not evidence that both phones were unveiled at one unified global event. Motorola’s G85 announcement and its support page establish the timing and rollout.

The G85 was not sold in the United States, according to contemporary review coverage. The Razr+ 2024, the U.S. name for the international Razr 50 Ultra, had a stated U.S. preorder route through Motorola.com, Amazon, Best Buy, T-Mobile and AT&T beginning July 10, 2024. Regional names matter: the international Razr 50 is generally called Razr 2024 in the U.S. Tech Advisor’s G85 coverage and Motorola’s Razr announcement describe those market distinctions.

What the Moto G85 brought to the mid-range

A curved screen as the headline feature

The G85’s clearest differentiator was its 6.67-inch curved pOLED display. Motorola’s launch announcement specified 2400 × 1080 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 1,600 nits peak brightness. The curved “Endless Edge” design gave a standard slab phone a more expensive visual character; it did not give it foldable functionality. Motorola’s launch specifications are the safest reference for the launch-period configuration, since specifications can vary by market and its support material has listed differing details, including a 144Hz refresh rate.

That screen was more than decoration: reviewers singled it out as the phone’s major strength, alongside the slim, light design. It offered a conspicuous premium cue at a mid-range price, but the appearance should not be mistaken for a flagship-level experience in every other respect. Contemporary review coverage praised the display and design while noting the compromises elsewhere.

The practical specification mix

Motorola’s launch materials listed a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 processor, a 5,000mAh battery, 30W TurboPower charging, a 50MP main rear camera with optical image stabilization, an 8MP ultrawide and a 32MP front camera. The phone launched with Android 14. The announcement described configurations up to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, with microSD expansion up to 1TB; RAM, storage and expansion availability depend on market. Contemporary European coverage, for example, described a 12GB/256GB model, while other regions had different variants. PhoneArena’s launch coverage reports regional configuration differences.

Reviewers also praised battery endurance, stereo speakers, everyday smoothness and a relatively clean Android interface. The Snapdragon chip is adequate for messaging, browsing, streaming and ordinary multitasking, but it is not a performance leader for demanding games or extended headroom. Reviews also identified inconsistent or mediocre camera results, slower UFS 2.2 storage, IP52 water-repellent protection and no headphone jack as limitations. These are practical trade-offs, not proof that the phone fails at its intended everyday tasks. Tech Advisor’s testing and assessment discusses these strengths and weaknesses.

Why the Razr foldables took the headlines

The 2024 Razr lineup had an inherently more visible story: phones that fold in half, with a usable screen on the outside. The Razr 50 Ultra (Razr+ 2024 in the U.S.) offered a 4-inch external display; the standard Razr 50 (Razr 2024 in the U.S.) offered a 3.6-inch one. Motorola also promoted 50MP camera systems, AI camera features, Google Photos editing integrations, fashion-oriented colors and its Pantone partnership. The Razr name carried its own heritage and “comeback” appeal. Motorola’s family announcement lays out the models and their positioning.

Those features are easy to show in a headline or image. The G85’s pitch—an upscale curved screen on a conventional phone—was subtler. The Razr appealed to buyers who valued novelty, compactness when folded, external-screen workflows and style. The G85 was aimed at mainstream buyers who wanted a large display, battery life and familiar phone ergonomics without paying for a hinge and flexible screen.

Halo product versus everyday phone

The most useful way to understand the launch is as a difference in roles. The Razr was Motorola’s attention-getting premium product; the G85 was a design-led mid-ranger. Its launch pricing was reported at €349 in Europe and £299 in the UK, while Indian launch coverage reported ₹17,999 for 8GB/128GB and ₹19,999 for 12GB/256GB. These are 2024 launch prices for specific markets and configurations, not current prices. Tech Advisor and AndroidCrunch reported those figures.

  • Fluid 120Hz Display: Features a large 6.7-inch HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for smooth scrolling and added durability.

The G85 borrowed some premium visual language—curved edges, a slim profile and a polished finish—without transferring the Razr’s costly technology. That can make a less expensive phone feel distinctive, but it does not make the products interchangeable. A foldable costs more and adds mechanical complexity and potential repair considerations; the G85 avoids those trade-offs but cannot fold, offer a cover-screen experience or deliver the same novelty.

Calling the G85 “under the shadow” of the foldables is therefore fair as a description of positioning and likely media attention. It is not a sales finding. The available evidence does not establish that Razr launches displaced G85 purchases or caused weak sales. The products occupied different price bands and served different buyers.

Who the G85 made sense for

Consider it if

  • You want a conventional phone with an attractive, large curved display and smooth everyday use.
  • Battery endurance, a light design and ordinary multitasking matter more than high-end gaming performance.
  • You are buying in a supported market and find the phone at a price that reflects its age and performance tier.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need strong sustained gaming performance, leading camera results or substantial long-term performance headroom.
  • You prioritize a long software-support record. Motorola’s current support page lists Android 16 as the G85’s upgrade target and security support through June 2028, while cautioning that release timing and content may change; this is a schedule, not an unconditional guarantee.
  • You need stronger water protection, a headphone jack, or U.S. availability. The G85 was not sold in the U.S. according to contemporary coverage, and market variants may differ on features.
  • You are considering it at its 2024 launch price without comparing newer mid-range phones available in your region.

For an early-2026 buying decision, the historical €349, £299 and Indian launch prices are context, not a current deal benchmark. Check local availability and pricing before buying; a modest discount alone does not erase the G85’s performance and support trade-offs.

Was it actually overshadowed?

Yes—in the narrow sense that a conventional mid-range phone had a quieter story beside a highly visible foldable launch. The Razr’s form factor, outer screens and brand recognition were better suited to headlines. The G85’s contribution was less dramatic but more relevant to buyers who wanted an everyday slab phone: it brought an eye-catching curved display and a solid battery proposition to a lower price tier.

That made the G85 easy to overlook, not automatically a bad purchase. Its display and design were genuine strengths; its processor, cameras and support horizon kept it from being a universal value choice. Motorola’s launch pairing suggests two different ways to sell a phone brand—novelty at the top, polished design in the middle—rather than a direct contest in which one product made the other obsolete.
