5.5G

More Smartphones Will Get 5.5G Support, but the Rollout Will Be Gradual

Yes—more smartphones are likely to support 5.5G, or 5G-Advanced, from 2026 onward. Expect the first expansion mainly in premium and upper-midrange Android phones. But a compatible modem alone does not guarantee a 5.5G connection: the exact phone, its software and regional hardware, carrier approval, and local network deployment all have to line up.

What 5.5G means

“5.5G,” “5G-A,” and “5G-Advanced” are commonly used names for the next stage of 5G. It is an evolution of 5G, not a separate generation like the move from 4G to 5G. The first 5G-Advanced release is 3GPP Release 18, with further development continuing in later releases. Qualcomm’s overview of 5G describes Release 18 as the first 5G-Advanced standard.

The label does not specify one fixed speed or a universal set of features. Operators and phone makers may introduce different capabilities at different times, so a 5.5G claim needs to be checked against the specific feature, device, carrier, and location.

Why more phones are likely to support it

The modem pipeline is expanding beyond a handful of flagship designs. That makes broader device support plausible, though it does not establish a launch date or complete feature set for every phone.

Platform or modem What is established What that does not establish
Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 Qualcomm describes it as designed for 5G-Advanced, with Release 18-ready features. The company lists peak figures of up to 10 Gbps download and 3.5 Gbps upload. X80 specifications Those peak figures are manufacturer-stated maxima, not typical user speeds or proof that every phone using the modem enables all features.
Qualcomm Snapdragon X85 Positioned for next-generation Android smartphones with 5G-Advanced capabilities. Qualcomm lists up to 12.5 Gbps download; upload figures vary by platform specification, at approximately 3.5–3.7 Gbps. X85 specifications A modem’s capabilities do not certify a finished phone or confirm that a carrier has deployed the corresponding network features.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and 8 Elite Gen 5 Qualcomm’s platform catalog pairs the 8 Gen 5 with X80 and the 8 Elite Gen 5 with X85. Snapdragon 8-series catalog The pairing alone does not confirm 5G-Advanced support on every phone model or regional variant using a platform.
MediaTek M90 MediaTek says the modem conforms to Release 17 and is aligned with forthcoming Release 18 5G-Advanced specifications. MediaTek M90 That alignment is not a promise that every M90 phone will ship with all 5G-Advanced functions enabled.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and 4 Gen 5 Qualcomm announced these platforms for commercial devices in the second half of 2026 and named Honor, OPPO, realme, and REDMI among expected OEMs. Qualcomm’s announcement The announcement discusses newer 5G capabilities; it does not verify complete 5G-Advanced support in every phone built on either platform.

Qualcomm describes AI-assisted modem techniques in the X80 and X85 as intended to improve speed, quality of service, latency, coverage, and power efficiency. These are platform capabilities and design goals, not guaranteed results for every owner. X80 details and X85 details explain the vendor’s claims.

What users may notice

Where an operator has deployed the relevant functions and has enough spectrum and backhaul, 5G-Advanced could improve more than headline download speeds. Potential benefits include:

None of these should be treated as an automatic improvement everywhere. Results depend on the carrier’s implementation, local signal and congestion, phone design, and enabled features. A label such as 5.5G does not guarantee a particular speed, latency, or satellite service.

Which phones are likely to get 5.5G first?

The most defensible expectation is a gradual, premium-first rollout, followed by expansion into upper-midrange phones as compatible platforms spread. A likely order is:

  1. Premium Android flagships using X80, X85, or an equivalent 5G-Advanced-ready modem.
  2. High-end foldables and performance-focused phones built around similar platforms.
  3. Upper-midrange models as compatible hardware becomes available at lower costs.
  4. Budget phones later, potentially with a narrower subset of 5G-Advanced capabilities.

That is a forecast based on the platform pipeline, not a confirmed list of retail models. Qualcomm’s smartphone platform catalog and device finder can help identify platform information, but check the phone maker’s specification for the exact model and country variant. Do not infer full 5.5G support from a chipset name alone.

Why a 5.5G-ready modem may not deliver 5.5G

There are three separate levels to check:

Level What it means What to verify
5G-Advanced-ready silicon The modem platform is designed to support relevant capabilities. Confirm the platform in the exact phone; a platform announcement is not a finished-device certification.
Device-level support The manufacturer implements and enables capabilities in the phone’s modem configuration, RF components, antennas, and software. Look for an explicit statement from the manufacturer for the exact model and regional version.
Network-level availability The carrier has deployed and enabled the feature in the location where the phone is used. Check the carrier’s local coverage and device compatibility information, and whether a plan or SIM requirement applies.

Other factors include supported bands, 5G standalone support, carrier certification, firmware, and whether the local network has enabled the relevant Release 18 functions. A phone may support the technology in principle and still connect only to ordinary 5G on a particular carrier.

Regional and US support

Network deployment depends on each country’s spectrum, operator plans, equipment, certification, and regulation. A phone marketed as 5.5G in one market may have different bands, modem hardware, or firmware in another, and may not offer the same functions on a US carrier.

Qualcomm has named operators including T-Mobile, Verizon, Deutsche Telekom, KDDI, and NTT DOCOMO in connection with its 5G-Advanced platforms. That indicates ecosystem activity, not universal service for their customers. Qualcomm’s X85 announcement describes the operator ecosystem. A separate Qualcomm–T-Mobile collaboration announcement discusses the path from 5G-Advanced toward 6G and targets commercial 6G deployments beginning in 2029; it is not evidence that all T-Mobile customers currently have 5.5G service.

Can an existing 5G phone get 5.5G in an update?

Some capabilities may be enabled or improved through firmware when a phone’s modem, RF system, and overall design already support them. Qualcomm highlights software upgradability for the X80, but that does not mean every device with a newer modem will receive every feature.

An update cannot add missing antenna paths or unsupported spectrum bands, turn an older modem into a newer one, or bypass carrier certification. Manufacturers also decide which optional capabilities to enable. Treat a promised update as meaningful only when the phone maker confirms it for the exact model.

Should you buy now or wait?

  • Upgrade now if your phone is failing, lacks ordinary 5G you need, has poor battery life, or no longer receives security updates. Do not keep an unsuitable phone solely for a network feature that may not be available locally.
  • Consider waiting if you already plan to buy a premium Android phone and expect to keep it for several years, particularly if your carrier confirms a near-term 5G-Advanced rollout where you live.
  • Do not pay a large premium just for the label. Ask the manufacturer and carrier to confirm what the exact device can use and whether that service is available to you.
  • Compare the whole phone. Battery life, software-support duration, camera quality, repairability, supported bands, and carrier compatibility matter more to many buyers than a theoretical peak rate.
  • Check the network before replacing the device. Coverage and congestion at home, work, and along your commute may matter more than a 5.5G badge; a different plan or carrier is not a guaranteed fix without location-specific verification.

How to verify a 5.5G claim before buying

  1. Find the exact model number and country or carrier variant, not just the retail name.
  2. Check which modem or mobile platform that specific variant uses.
  3. Look for the manufacturer’s explicit wording: does it say 5G-Advanced or 5G-A, or only 5G or “advanced” 5G?
  4. Compare the phone’s supported 5G bands with those used by your carrier.
  5. Confirm 5G standalone support if the carrier requires it for the feature.
  6. Ask the carrier whether it certifies that exact model for the relevant service.
  7. Check whether your SIM or plan must meet additional requirements.
  8. Find out whether support works now or depends on a future firmware update, and whether the manufacturer has committed to a date.
  9. Review the manufacturer’s software-support commitment as part of the purchase decision.
  10. Check the return policy in case the advertised network capability does not work with your carrier.
