Jump ahead is a real YouTube feature, but it is not officially described as a new feature for the YouTube TV live-TV service. YouTube announced it as a YouTube Premium benefit on June 27, 2024. It uses AI and viewing patterns to predict a point people commonly skip to in an eligible video. YouTube’s current Help page lists support across computers, smart TVs, streaming devices and game consoles, but says the button may not appear on every video.
What YouTube’s Jump ahead feature does
Jump ahead is a quicker way to seek through a video. After you start fast-forwarding, YouTube may offer a button that takes playback to a point where viewers commonly stop skipping and resume watching. YouTube says the feature combines AI with viewership data; it is a prediction based on viewing behavior, not an automatically edited version of the video. YouTube’s announcement describes it as finding the next point viewers are likely aiming for.
That distinction matters: Jump ahead is not a video-summary tool, a chatbot, or a guarantee that YouTube has identified the most important part. A popular skip point may not be the section you personally want.
Is Jump ahead part of YouTube TV?
Not according to YouTube’s official description. The feature is presented as part of YouTube Premium for regular YouTube videos. YouTube and YouTube TV are separate products: YouTube is the video platform for creator uploads and other on-demand videos, while YouTube TV is a live-TV service with channels and cloud DVR.

| YouTube Premium | The subscription benefit associated with Jump ahead on YouTube videos. |
| YouTube app on a television | The regular YouTube app on a smart TV or connected device. YouTube Help lists these device categories for Jump ahead. |
| YouTube TV | The separate live-TV service. The sources do not establish Jump ahead support for its channels or DVR recordings. |
| YouTube TV navigation | YouTube TV has distinct features, including sports Key Plays and segment navigation for select news recordings; these are not the same as Jump ahead. See YouTube’s YouTube TV material. |
A March 2024 announcement about a richer television experience discussed the YouTube app on TVs and some features for YouTube TV subscribers, but it did not announce Premium Jump ahead as a YouTube TV feature. The announcement covers television viewing experiences, not proof that Jump ahead works in the YouTube TV app.
Who can use it, and where?
YouTube’s Help documentation describes Jump ahead as a Premium feature and lists computers, smart TVs, streaming devices and game consoles. When YouTube announced it on June 27, 2024, it said the initial availability was for U.S. Premium subscribers on Android, with iOS support expected later. The current Help page does not provide a complete country-by-country or device-by-device rollout matrix, so availability may vary. A YouTube TV subscription alone is not established as qualifying access.

Even on a supported device and Premium account, the button is conditional: YouTube says it may not appear on every video. The official announcement and Help page do not promise that all accounts, regions, languages, or videos will receive it.
How to use Jump ahead
On a phone or tablet
- Open an eligible video in the main YouTube app while signed in to the account with YouTube Premium.
- Double-tap the right side of the video to skip forward.
- If YouTube offers the Jump ahead button, select it to move to the predicted point.
The double-tap flow is the one YouTube described at launch. The control appears only when YouTube offers a suggestion for that video.

On a computer
YouTube Help lists double-clicking to fast-forward, hovering over the progress bar, and keyboard shortcuts as ways to access the relevant fast-forward control: Option + Right Arrow on macOS and Ctrl + Right Arrow on Windows. Player appearance can vary, so look for the Jump ahead control rather than expecting an identical button in every layout.
On a TV, streaming device or game console
YouTube lists these device categories as supported. Start fast-forwarding through an eligible video and look for a Jump ahead control if the player offers one. There is no single remote-button sequence established for every device; the interaction depends on the platform, remote and player interface.

What can it skip—and does it skip ads?
Because it moves playback within a video, Jump ahead may land beyond sections viewers often skip, such as a long introduction, recap, creator-read sponsorship or outro. That is a possible result of viewer behavior, not a promise that YouTube targets any particular type of segment.
- Creator-read sponsorships: A commonly skipped portion could be passed over, but YouTube does not promise that Jump ahead will detect or skip sponsorships.
- YouTube-served ads: Jump ahead is not documented as a way to disable or bypass separately served advertisements.
- YouTube TV commercials and recordings: The available official material does not establish that Jump ahead works on YouTube TV ads, live channels, sports recordings or DVR programs.
The feature changes the playback position; it does not remove or rewrite content. Use YouTube TV’s own playback controls and supported navigation features when watching its recordings.

Why might the Jump ahead button be missing?
The one limitation YouTube states directly is that Jump ahead may not appear on every video. If you expected to see it, check these possibilities:
- You may be signed out, or signed in to a Google account without YouTube Premium.
- You may have opened YouTube TV rather than the main YouTube app or YouTube.com.
- The video may not have a clear commonly skipped-to point, or YouTube may not have enough viewing behavior to offer a prediction. These are practical possibilities, not individually specified eligibility rules.
- Your device, region, language, app version or rollout may affect whether the control appears; YouTube does not publish a complete current availability matrix in the cited Help page.
- The app or player may need to be updated or restarted. This is a basic troubleshooting step, not a stated Jump ahead requirement.
Confirm the account and app first, then try another long YouTube video. If the control remains absent, manual scrubbing and chapters, when provided, remain available ways to navigate.
How Jump ahead differs from chapters and YouTube TV navigation
| Control | How it navigates |
|---|---|
| Chapters | Shows labeled sections on the timeline when supplied for a video. |
| Manual fast-forward | Moves through the timeline at the viewer’s direction and pace. |
| Jump ahead | Offers a predicted point commonly reached after viewers fast-forward; it is a YouTube Premium feature. |
| YouTube TV Key Plays or news segment navigation | Separate YouTube TV navigation features for relevant sports or select news recordings. |
For a specific timestamp or topic, chapters, creator timestamps, a transcript when available, or manual scrubbing can be more precise than a prediction based on aggregate behavior.
Is YouTube Premium worth it just for Jump ahead?
That depends on your viewing habits. Jump ahead is most relevant if you often watch long YouTube interviews, podcasts, tutorials or reviews and frequently scrub through them. It is less compelling if you mainly watch short clips, use YouTube TV for live channels, or expect the feature to skip commercials or every sponsorship. YouTube’s Premium product details are at youtube.com/premium; the feature alone does not establish a reason to buy a separate YouTube TV subscription.
