The old launch trick used the app’s Tabs screen, but reports from August 2024 indicate the game had disappeared. There is no verified current method from Google for launching it.
What was Google Pinball?
Google Pinball was a Google-themed pinball and brick-breaker minigame hidden in the iOS Google app. Players kept a ball in play with virtual flippers while breaking colorful shapes. It was not a standalone “Google Pinball” app, a permanent Google Search feature, or a Google Doodle with a known launch page. The game was widely reported on July 1, 2021. 9to5Google’s 2021 coverage documents the game and its discovery.
Contemporary reports found it in the iOS app and did not find it in the Android version; that is a historical distinction, not evidence that it remains available on iOS today. Gadgets 360’s guide describes the original iOS launch path and Android comparison.
How the original Tabs trick worked
Historical instructions—not a confirmed method for current versions: reports differed on whether the final trigger was waiting, swiping, or repeated interaction. The common sequence was to reach an empty Tabs screen and swipe upward when shapes appeared.

- Open the Google app on an iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Tabs in the bottom navigation, if that control is present.
- Close all open tabs, using the trash-can control if shown.
- Stay on the empty Tabs screen and wait for colorful shapes to rise from the bottom. Some historical guides instead said to swipe upward repeatedly to make them appear.
- Swipe upward on the shapes to launch the game.
The precise trigger varied across accounts and app states, so these steps describe how the Easter egg was reported to work—not a guaranteed sequence now. iDownloadBlog’s 2021 tutorial and Tom’s Guide’s instructions record historical variations.
How the game played
Once launched, the game used taps rather than physical controls: tapping the left side activated the left flipper, and tapping the right side activated the right. Some historical accounts said tapping near the center could activate both. Swiping during play could disrupt or exit the game, so taps were the safer control.

Players reportedly started with three lives or balls and progressed through increasingly difficult levels. Colorful Google-inspired shapes, bumpers, and obstacles filled the play area. Heart icons could grant an extra life; star power-ups were reported to enlarge the ball, break shapes more effectively, or split it into multiple balls. Contemporary coverage also said the game could be played offline once available. These are descriptions of the historical game, not confirmation that it can still be launched. Does Google Pinball still work in 2026?
It appears to have been removed, although Google has not formally announced a permanent removal in the cited sources. In a Google Search Community thread dated August 9, 2024, users said they could no longer find the Easter egg; a Google Product Expert replied that it “seems to be gone.” A separate March 2025 request asked Google to bring it back, without identifying a working replacement method. That distinction matters: the Google app itself remains available, but its continued availability does not mean the Easter egg remains in the app. The U.S. App Store listing for Google identifies the current app and its features but does not advertise pinball. Google’s Search Help likewise provides current app support material without documenting a pinball launch method.
What to try if you want to check anyway
If your Google app still shows Tabs, you can try the old sequence once: close the tabs, wait on the empty view, then swipe upward. If nothing appears, that does not mean you missed a secret step; the feature may simply no longer be present.

- No Tabs button: The app’s navigation can vary with interface changes, account, or app version. Historical instructions may not map onto your current screen. Community users have also reported changes involving Tabs. See the Tabs interface discussion.
- Tabs appears, but no shapes show: Clearing tabs and waiting were historical steps, not a reliable current fix. Updating the app is not known to restore the game.
- Using an iPad: Historical coverage described iPad support, though user reports were not fully consistent. Current compatibility for the Google app does not establish availability of the old minigame.
- Using Android: The original reports did not find the game in the Android app. No official Android launch path is established here.
There is no verified reason to downgrade the app, jailbreak a device, or install an unofficial copy; those steps introduce security and compatibility risks without an established way to recover the Easter egg.

No source cited here establishes that the iOS pinball minigame was a Doodle or that it can be relaunched from the Doodle archive. In response to the 2025 request to restore pinball, a community reply pointed users toward past Doodles; that suggestion was not a replacement game or confirmation that pinball is archived there.
