Lower Third Graphics: What They Are and How to Create Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A lower third is a text or graphic overlay placed in the lower portion of a video to identify a speaker or add useful context without replacing the footage. For example, an interview graphic might show Maya Chen on the first line and Climate Scientist beneath it. It can be a simple static label or a designed, animated element; it does not have to fill exactly one-third of the screen.

What is a lower third graphic?

A lower third is an overlay positioned in the lower area of a video frame. It commonly combines text with a background shape, accent, logo, or motion. The name describes its conventional placement, not a measurement: a lower third may be a narrow bar, a compact label, or a larger panel, and its position can shift to suit the footage or aspect ratio. Adobe describes the term and its uses in its lower-third graphics guide.

In broadcast and production settings, related terms include “name strap,” “super,” “caption,” and “chyron,” but usage varies. They are not reliable, universal synonyms. A chyron can refer to a particular news-style banner or graphics system, while “caption” usually means text representing speech or relevant audio.

What are lower thirds used for?

Identify a person

The most familiar use is to introduce an interviewee, presenter, guest, or expert. Put the person’s name first, then a shorter title, organization, or role. For example: Jordan Lee / Product Designer, Northstar Labs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add location or context

A brief label can establish where or when footage was recorded, clarify the source of an image, or indicate that a segment is live. Examples include “Chicago, Illinois,” “Day 14 — Field Report,” “File footage,” and “Artist rendering.” Use labels such as “Courtesy of…” or “Sponsored segment” when they accurately convey attribution or disclosure.

Support creator and brand identity

Social videos may use a channel name, social handle, website, episode label, or concise subscribe prompt. These elements are useful only when viewers have time to read them and they do not compete with the main message. Adobe lists channel names, social handles, and subscribe prompts among common social-video applications (Adobe).

Operate a live event

During a webinar, livestream, or virtual event, lower thirds can identify guests and presenters, introduce a poll result, display a short audience question, or show a call to action or sponsor message. Restream also describes uses including guest introductions, quotes, and source credits in its livestream lower-third guide. Live graphics should be prepared and assigned to the right scene before they are needed.

Present broadcast information

News and sports productions may place scores, weather, market figures, election results, or tickers near the bottom of the frame. These may be called data graphics, bugs, or tickers rather than ordinary lower thirds. The term is used more broadly in everyday video-editing contexts.

How a lower third differs from captions, titles, and logos

Element Main purpose Typical behavior
Lower third Identify a speaker or add concise context to continuing footage Overlays the video, often in the lower area
Caption or subtitle Represent spoken words, translation, or other relevant audio Tracks dialogue or audio; may be a selectable caption track or burned-in text
Title card Introduce a video, section, or topic May temporarily replace footage or occupy most of the frame
Logo bug Maintain a small, persistent brand mark Usually remains in a corner and carries little or no explanatory text
Full-screen graphic Present information as the main visual Replaces or covers most of the underlying footage

A lower third can help identify a speaker, but it does not transcribe what that person says. It is not a substitute for properly authored captions or subtitles.

What goes into an effective lower third?

  • Primary text: The name or key fact viewers should notice first.
  • Secondary text: A title, organization, location, or short supporting detail.
  • Background: A bar, solid panel, translucent shape, or gradient that keeps the text readable over the footage.
  • Accent: A restrained line, color block, or other visual cue that supports the design.
  • Logo or icon: Optional, and visually subordinate to the information.
  • Motion: Optional entrance and exit; the graphic can remain static while visible.

The viewer should be able to tell what to read first. Usually that means making the name or central fact more prominent than the title, with branding and decoration less prominent still.

How to design a lower third that works

Keep the copy brief and ordered

A lower third is not a biography. Include the information a viewer needs immediately and move supporting detail into narration, captions, or another graphic. Check spelling, name pronunciation where relevant, job titles, affiliations, dates, and attribution before exporting or going live.

Prioritize legibility

Use a readable typeface and weight, short lines, and strong contrast between text and background. Thin lettering can disappear against moving or detailed footage. Add an opaque or translucent backing shape when the image behind the text is busy, and avoid transparency so strong that the footage overwhelms the words. Adobe recommends text that viewers can read within about three seconds and a simple, non-competing background in its lower-third animation guidance. That is a useful design check, not a universal display-duration rule: reading time depends on the copy, language, screen, and audience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place it for the actual delivery format

Traditional video workflows use a title-safe area to reduce the chance that text will be cut off. Modern delivery adds other constraints: a 16:9 video may be cropped to 9:16 or square, while platform controls, captions, chat, or comments can cover parts of the frame. Keep text away from edges and check each intended layout rather than assuming one placement is safe everywhere. Adobe discusses title-safe placement in its lower-third guide.

In Premiere Pro, safe-margin guides can help with placement; a Storyblocks tutorial describes enabling Safe Margins from the Program Monitor’s Wrench menu. Interface names can vary by Premiere version (Storyblocks tutorial). Also inspect the final export on the devices and platforms where people will watch it.

Protect important picture information

Check what sits underneath the proposed graphic: hands, products, charts, faces, subtitles, sports scores, or action near the bottom of the frame. Shift the graphic, use a side-aligned design, or coordinate its timing with other overlays when it would hide something viewers need to see.

Use branding with restraint

Approved fonts, colors, spacing, and a consistent name/title system make a series feel coherent. Brand colors still need adequate contrast, and the logo should not overpower the information. Adobe notes that corporate lower thirds commonly use an organization’s colors while retaining essential information (Adobe).

Make motion serve the message

A simple slide, fade, shape reveal, or masked text reveal can draw the eye; elaborate motion is not automatically more professional. Keep the graphic readable while it is on screen and avoid fast movement, excessive bounce, distracting sound effects, or an exit that collides with the next edit. Adobe’s After Effects workflow describes animating a background shape before the text (Adobe).

Plan an entrance, a readable hold, and an exit. The right duration depends on the amount of text, audience, language, and whether viewers may rely on the on-screen information without audio. Avoid placing an entrance or exit over a moment that needs the viewer’s full attention.

How to create one from scratch

  1. Write the exact copy. Decide what belongs in the graphic and verify names, titles, and attribution.
  2. Set the delivery format. Choose the video resolution and aspect ratio before building the layout; plan separate versions if the same content will be cropped for different platforms.
  3. Set the hierarchy. Make the primary fact prominent and supporting text secondary.
  4. Build a readable background. Add a bar, panel, gradient, or shape if the footage needs separation behind the text.
  5. Add only useful branding. Include a logo or accent when it helps viewers identify the speaker or series.
  6. Position and check the graphic. Use safe guides where available, then verify that it avoids subtitles and important picture details.
  7. Animate only if it helps. Create a restrained entrance and exit around a readable hold.
  8. Test against real footage. Preview over both light and dark scenes, movement, and the actual subject framing.
  9. Review at delivery size. Check the export or live preview on the target device and platform, including any crop.
  10. Save an editable master. Preserve text, colors, and reusable controls if the graphic will be used again.

How to make a lower third in Premiere Pro

Premiere’s graphics interface has changed across releases, so the exact panel names may differ. Adobe’s general route is to open the Essential Graphics panel, browse graphic templates, drag one onto the timeline, and customize its text, appearance, duration, and transitions. Alternatively, create a title with the Type tool (Adobe’s Premiere overview).

For a basic graphic made from text and a shape, a Storyblocks workflow describes this sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the Type Tool and click in the Program Monitor to create a text layer.
  2. Set the font, size, alignment, and style, then position the text using text controls or Effect Controls.
  3. Use the monitor’s Wrench menu to turn on Safe Margins, if available in your version.
  4. Add a rectangle or other shape for the backing, then place the text layer above it.
  5. Set the shape’s color, size, opacity, and position; add keyframes for position or other properties if animation is needed.
  6. Preview the result over the footage and confirm that it remains clear in the final frame.

If a panel or control is missing, look for the current Text, Graphics, Essential Graphics, Properties, or template controls in your release. The precise labels and layout are version-dependent. The described from-scratch sequence is documented in the Storyblocks Premiere tutorial.

When After Effects and MOGRTs make sense

A Motion Graphics template (MOGRT) lets a designer build a graphic and preset animation in After Effects, then expose selected controls—such as text, color, or animation properties—for reuse in Premiere Pro. What an editor can change depends on how the template was authored; not every layer or effect is automatically editable. Adobe explains lower-third animation and reusable templates in its After Effects guidance and lower-third guide.

  1. Build separate text, background, logo, and accent elements in After Effects.
  2. Make the background respond to text length if editors will replace names or titles.
  3. Expose only the controls editors should change and export the composition as a MOGRT.
  4. Import or install the template in Premiere Pro and test it with short and long names, two-line titles, and translated text.
  5. Check required fonts, plugins, software versions, aspect ratios, playback, and rendering before distributing it to a team.

A reusable template is especially useful for recurring interviews, episodes, or campaigns where several editors need a consistent look. Longer names, different languages, substituted fonts, unsupported plugins, and heavy animations can break layouts or slow playback, so test those cases before the template becomes a production dependency.

Static PNGs and ready-made templates

Static PNG

For a simple, fixed design, create a transparent-background PNG at the video’s dimensions, import it into the editor, and place it above the footage. Adobe describes transparent PNGs as one option for placing a lower third over video (Adobe). A PNG is portable and straightforward, but its text is not readily editable; changing a name usually means returning to the source design or making another image. It is less convenient when you need many text variations, aspect ratios, or sophisticated animation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Downloaded template

A template can save design time, but check that it supports your editing application and version, required fonts and plugins, intended aspect ratio, editable text controls, and commercial or broadcast use. Licensing terms vary by asset. A paid template is not necessarily a better fit than a free one; compatibility and the rights you need matter more than price alone.

How to add lower thirds during a livestream

Live-production tools differ, but Vimeo documents a browser-based workflow for supported events. Its current help page says the feature requires an Advanced or Premium plan, or an Enterprise plan with the Events feature, and applies to its in-browser production mode rather than every external-encoder workflow. Confirm current plan and interface details in Vimeo’s instructions.

  1. Open the web-based production tool and select the Graphics icon.
  2. Select + Add lower third, enter the primary text, optional image, and secondary text, then save.
  3. Open Scenes and add the graphic to the scene where it should appear.
  4. When that scene is live, select Show; select Hide to remove the graphic.

Vimeo says its tool can also create speaker lower thirds with name and title fields, but without an image field. Graphics can be retained for recurring events, though they do not necessarily display automatically each time. If a graphic does not appear, confirm it exists, has been added to the active scene, and is set to Show; then verify that the event is using the supported production mode and account plan (Vimeo).

Choose a workflow that fits the job

Workflow Best fit Main trade-off
Built-in editor title A few straightforward graphics, especially when you already edit in the software Quick to make, but may offer less visual distinction or automation
Static PNG A fixed label or simple logo treatment Portable, but text and layout are harder to revise or adapt
Downloaded template A polished starting point for recurring work May require specific software, fonts, plugins, or licensing
After Effects MOGRT Teams needing reusable, controlled branding and editable text Requires setup and depends on how the template was authored
Live-platform overlay Graphics that operators must show and hide during an event Features can depend on plan, production mode, and platform limits
Custom motion design An original broadcast identity or complex multi-format package Offers maximum control but takes the most design time and resources

For one name banner, an existing editor or transparent PNG is usually enough. For repeated videos, choose a reusable template; for a controlled animated system shared among editors, consider a MOGRT. For a live event, use a production platform that supports the operator’s actual workflow. Custom design is appropriate when the graphic is part of a larger identity package or must meet complex brand and production requirements.

Common problems and fixes

Text is hard to read

Low contrast, small or thin type, busy footage, excessive transparency, and fast motion are common causes. Darken or add a backing shape, increase the type size or weight, shorten the copy, move the graphic to a calmer area, and review it on the intended viewing device.

The graphic gets cropped or covered

Move it farther from the frame edge, enable safe guides where available, and check the final export in each intended aspect ratio. Make separate 16:9 and 9:16 versions when a crop would compromise placement. Account for platform interface elements, player controls, livestream comments, and subtitles.

It overlaps captions

Coordinate subtitle and lower-third positions. Raise the lower third, use a side-aligned layout where suitable, or establish a production rule for which element takes priority. Do not assume that placing the graphic near the bottom will leave captions clear.

Long names break the design

Test the longest expected name and title before publishing a template. Use responsive text boxes, define a two-line variation or copy limits, and check translations for longer text. Ensure the copy cannot collide with a logo or accent element.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A template fails in the editor

Check the supported application and version, required fonts, plugin dependencies, frame dimensions, and available editable controls. Use approved font substitutions only after checking the layout. If the template cannot be made compatible, request a flattened PNG or video fallback, or the original project file if changes are required.

Live graphics do not show

Confirm that the graphic exists, has been added to the correct scene, and is shown when that scene is live. In Vimeo’s documented workflow, also check that the event uses browser-based production and that the account has the required access (Vimeo’s troubleshooting context).

Final lower-third checklist

  • Is the information accurate, concise, and spelled correctly?
  • Is the name or key fact clearly more prominent than supporting detail?
  • Can viewers read it over the footage and at the expected screen size?
  • Is it safely placed for the intended aspect ratio and platform crop?
  • Does it avoid captions, faces, hands, products, charts, and other important content?
  • Have you tested the longest name, title, or translation?
  • Does the animation help viewers notice and read the graphic?
  • Are branding, fonts, and colors approved, and are template licenses suitable for the intended use?
  • Have you reviewed the final export or live scene on the intended platform?
