Short answer: a Realme X or Realme X2 can sometimes be returned from Android 10 (realme UI) to Android 9 Pie, but only with a genuine, device- and region-specific legacy rollback package. Realme’s current support pages do not clearly publish a maintained Android 10-to-Pie package for these discontinued phones, so this is not a universal or guaranteed feature. Expect a complete factory reset.
Most search results describe a different transition—Android 11/realme UI 2.0 to Android 10/realme UI 1.0. Those files cannot be used to reach Pie.
What this rollback actually means
The Realme X launched with Android 9 Pie and ColorOS 6.0, as documented in Realme’s launch material (Realme X launch announcement). Android 10 brought realme UI. Returning to Pie therefore means crossing back to the original ColorOS generation, not merely uninstalling an update.
A rollback package is a vendor transition file intended to move between specified Android generations. A full firmware or OZIP is the complete operating-system image used for an upgrade or reinstall. A custom ROM is an unofficial replacement with its own bootloader and recovery requirements. Do not substitute one for another.

Is an official Android 10-to-Pie package still available?
Realme’s current support and software-update pages provide general backup, update and Recovery Mode guidance, but they do not clearly identify a current Android 10-to-Pie rollback package for both the Realme X and X2 (Realme global FAQ; Realme software-update guidance). Historical guides report a Pie rollback route, yet old links, regional files and authentication status may no longer be reliable (historical Realme X/X2 coverage).
The defensible conclusion in 2026 is: possible for some historical firmware and regional combinations, but not officially guaranteed for every owner. Do not begin until the exact package, starting build and model suffix are documented.
Identify the exact phone before downloading anything
Open Settings > About phone and record the complete model code, current Android version, realme UI version and build number. Common firmware families include:

Never mix X and X2 firmware, or standard X2 files with X2 Pro, XT or another Snapdragon model. Regional suffixes can affect modem, VoLTE, NFC, camera behavior and update acceptance. A successful installation screen does not prove that every carrier or hardware function will work.

Distinguish the rollback path
Check the starting Android version printed in the package instructions. The widely indexed X2 instructions are explicitly for realme UI 2.0 (Android 11) to realme UI 1.0 (Android 10), not Android 10 to Pie (RMUpdate X2 instructions). A file labelled “Android 11 to Android 10 rollback” will not take an Android 10 phone to Android 9.
Before you begin
Rollback should be treated as a destructive firmware operation. Realme’s support material warns users to back up before firmware work and confirms that a factory reset permanently deletes data (Realme regional FAQ).
- Confirm the full model code, region and current build.
- Back up photos, videos, contacts, messages, downloads, app data, authenticator accounts and 2FA recovery codes to a separate device or cloud account. Verify that the backup can be opened.
- Remove or record Google-account credentials. Factory Reset Protection may request the previously used account after the first reboot.
- Charge to at least 40–50%. Realme cites 30% for ordinary updates; a higher margin is prudent for a wipe and long first boot.
- Use a stable download and verify the publisher’s checksum when one is supplied. Keep the original file unchanged unless its instructions explicitly say otherwise.
- Ensure sufficient internal storage and uninterrupted power.
- Have a recovery plan: an authorized Realme service center or a known-good, exact-match official firmware package.
Historical stock-Recovery procedure
Use these steps only after independently confirming that the package is a genuine Android 10-to-Pie transition file for your exact variant and starting build. Stock Recovery may allow this without a PC; that does not make it risk-free.
- Complete and verify your backup, then make sure you can sign in to the previously used Google account.
- Copy the verified rollback file to the phone’s internal storage. Do not extract or rename it unless the package instructions require that.
- Power the phone off.
- Hold Power + Volume Down until Recovery Mode appears. Realme documents this button combination and installation from phone storage (Realme Recovery instructions).
- Select a language if prompted.
- Choose Install from storage, From phone storage or the equivalent menu label.
- Select the rollback file and enter the lock-screen password if requested.
- Confirm installation. Do not press buttons, disconnect power or attempt a restart while verification and flashing run.
- Let the phone reboot and complete the initial setup. The first start after a system transition can take much longer than normal.
- If the package is only an intermediate transition, install the matching full Pie firmware only when its instructions confirm that the intermediate state has been reached.
Recovery wording varies by version and region. If the file is rejected, stop rather than trying a different model’s package.

When Recovery rejects the file
“Installation failed” or “Verification failed”
Likely causes include a wrong model or region, corrupted download, unsupported starting build, an Android 11-to-10 file, or anti-rollback protection. Recheck the complete suffix and checksum. Do not interpret rejection as permission to flash an unrelated file.
Package cannot be found
Check that the file is in internal storage, has its original extension and was not altered. Some Recovery versions do not expose every folder or external-storage format.
Boot loop after installation
Allow one complete first-boot cycle. If the phone repeatedly returns to the logo, enter Recovery and use only a verified, exact-match full firmware package. Avoid repeated wipes and random archives; preserve the model and build information for professional recovery.
No signal or missing features
This usually indicates a regional mismatch, modem incompatibility or wrong variant. Do not assume a successful boot means the firmware is suitable for your carrier.

Recovery cannot decrypt storage or the phone will not boot
Do not format blindly or flash files labelled for another Realme model. Encryption, bootloader and anti-rollback state may require a device-specific service procedure. An authorized service center is safer than trial-and-error flashing.

Possibly. A valid stock rollback package can be selected from Recovery’s phone-storage menu, as shown in Realme’s documented procedure and historical rollback instructions (RMUpdate). A PC may still be needed for copying and preserving backups, bootloader work, Fastboot recovery or service tools. Custom-ROM instructions are a separate process and should not be mixed with this stock method.
Should you return to Pie?
Reasons it may make sense
- A specific app, modification or workflow requires Android 9.
- You have reproduced a problem that began with Android 10 and have confirmed it is version-specific.
- You prefer the original ColorOS interface and accept the maintenance trade-off.
Costs and risks
- Android 9 is obsolete and less secure than newer Android releases. Realme’s current security-advisory page focuses on newer products rather than presenting the X/X2 as actively supported security devices (Realme Android security advisories).
- Some newer apps may no longer support Pie.
- Android 10 app data may not restore cleanly, and banking, DRM, Play certification or carrier features can change.
- The operation normally wipes the phone, and a later return to Android 10 may require another wipe or manual flash.
There is no reliable basis for promising better speed, battery life or stability without controlled testing on your exact device. For security-sensitive work, staying on a supported phone—or using a genuinely maintained, compatible custom ROM—may be safer than returning to Pie.

Are Realme X and X2 packages interchangeable?
No. Their hardware and model families differ, and regional suffixes matter. Use only a package naming your exact model and region.
Does bootloader unlocking always have to be done?
No. A vendor rollback accepted by stock Recovery may not require an unlocked bootloader. Custom ROM or Fastboot procedures commonly do.
What if no verified Pie package can be found?
Do not use a generic ROM, shortened-link download or modified archive. Staying on the current firmware or seeking an authorized service center is safer.
