For a website, design, or publication, start with Meta’s Brand Resources for current assets and rules rather than relying on an image-search result.
Instagram icon, wordmark, and logo: what is the difference?
- Icon: The square camera glyph, usually shown without the Instagram name. It is also called the app icon or camera mark.
- Wordmark: The written “Instagram” name.
- Logo: A broad everyday term for the icon, wordmark, or a design that combines them.
- Social icon: A compact symbol used as a link to a social profile. It is not necessarily a promotional badge or an endorsement mark.
If you mean the colorful camera symbol, look for the Instagram icon. If you mean the written name, look for the wordmark. In casual conversation, people often call both the Instagram logo.
What does the Instagram icon look like?
The familiar modern mark has a rounded-square field with a multicolor gradient and a simplified camera outline: a central circular lens and a small circle near the upper-right corner. Avoid relying on unofficial color values or assuming every app listing, advertisement, device, or regional interface displays precisely the same rendering. For an exact current asset, consult Meta’s brand resources.
How the Instagram logo changed
- Early branding: Instagram used a more detailed camera illustration alongside a script-style wordmark.
- 2016 redesign: The detailed camera gave way to the simplified outline and vivid gradient familiar today. A public asset record dates the modern icon’s first appearance to May 11, 2016; see the icon record and the separately documented 2016 vector mark.
- 2022 version: A public asset record documents a revised version of the 2016 icon dated May 17, 2022. It is best described as a later treatment of that design, not necessarily an entirely new identity. See the 2022 asset record.
- Meta identity: Instagram is a Meta service, but Instagram’s product branding is distinct from Meta’s corporate identity. Meta made that distinction in its 2019 company-brand announcement.
Some third-party reports in August 2026 claim Instagram adjusted its wordmark, but no official Meta confirmation is established here. Treat the claim as unconfirmed unless Meta publishes an announcement or updates its official brand materials; a reported wordmark change would not by itself establish that the app icon changed.

Where to get an Instagram logo or icon
- Check Meta Brand Resources first: Visit Meta Brand Resources and check the current Instagram-specific assets and terms. Meta’s Terms of Service direct users to Brand Resources for trademark, logo, and screenshot use.
- Use official Meta or Instagram materials where appropriate: Press and brand materials can help establish which version is current, but follow the applicable usage terms.
- Use public asset archives for reference, not permission: Wikimedia-hosted records can help inspect historical versions or vectors, but they are not a substitute for Meta’s current rules.
- Be cautious with logo-download sites: A file may be outdated, altered, poorly traced, or accompanied by an inaccurate licensing claim. A filename such as “Instagram.svg” does not prove the asset is official.
Do not choose an asset just because it appears near the top of an image search. Check its provenance, version, format, transparency, resolution, and whether your planned use is permitted.
Which file format should you use?
| Use | Usually suitable | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Responsive website or vector layout | Official SVG, if supplied and permitted | Confirm it is a genuine vector and renders correctly in your browser and design workflow. |
| Presentation, video, or social graphic | Transparent PNG | Choose enough resolution for the displayed size; a small image enlarged later can blur. |
| Print production | Official vector or sufficiently high-resolution PNG | Ask the printer about its requirements and avoid enlarging a low-resolution source. |
| App launcher or app-store artwork | Platform-specific or official app asset | Follow the platform’s requirements as well as Instagram’s branding rules; a social icon is not automatically an app icon asset. |
| Small browser or interface placement | Properly sized raster export where needed | Test legibility and rendering at the actual size; SVG support depends on the workflow. |
SVG can scale cleanly, but some files embed a bitmap or use features an editor handles poorly. PNG is predictable and supports transparency, but has a fixed resolution. Do not enlarge a screenshot of the app icon and expect a crisp result, and do not assume an editable file is authorized to recolor or reshape.

Can you use the Instagram logo?
Instagram’s terms say its trademarks and other intellectual property may be used only as expressly permitted by applicable brand guidelines or with prior written permission. Instagram also identifies logos and symbols as trademark-relevant material. Read the current Instagram Terms of Use and Instagram intellectual-property guidance before a consequential use.
Identification and linking
A social link that clearly takes visitors to your Instagram profile, or an editorial article discussing Instagram’s branding, is different from using the mark as your own identity. These are practical distinctions, not a legal guarantee: the full presentation must not mislead people about affiliation, approval, or sponsorship.

Uses that warrant caution or permission
- Making the icon part of your company logo, product identity, packaging, or merchandise.
- Using it to suggest Instagram or Meta sponsors, certifies, or endorses a product, service, event, or account.
- Combining it with another company’s mark in a new lockup or claiming to be an “official Instagram partner” without authorization.
- Using an unofficial or modified asset while presenting it as an authorized Meta design.
- Using the mark prominently in paid advertising, a partnership announcement, or an app interface where the context could imply a formal relationship.
Instagram explains that trademark rules address confusion about affiliation or sponsorship in its trademark guidance. For a campaign centered on the mark, merchandise, packaging, a claimed partnership, or a trademark filing, seek written permission or jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
Copyright is not the same as trademark permission
A simple geometric design may receive limited copyright protection in some jurisdictions or circumstances. That does not make the logo “free to use”: trademark rights and rules against misleading affiliation can still apply, and the answer depends on local law. A public asset page’s copyright assessment is not worldwide legal clearance; the 2022 asset record itself flags the separate relevance of trademark restrictions.

Can you modify the Instagram icon?
Unless the current official guidelines expressly permit a particular treatment, do not stretch, skew, rotate, redraw, recolor, add effects to, crop, or combine the icon into a new brand lockup. Keep it legible and distinct from surrounding graphics. Do not invent clear-space, minimum-size, or color-code specifications: use numbers only if Meta’s current guide provides them. Editing an asset in Illustrator or another design tool does not grant permission to use the altered mark.
How to add an Instagram icon to a website
- Obtain an official or otherwise authorized asset in a format suitable for your site.
- Link it to the correct Instagram profile, not just to a generic destination.
- Give the link an accessible name. If the image has an empty alt attribute, provide the name on the link; if the image itself names the destination, use suitable alternative text.
- Test keyboard access, contrast, and legibility on desktop and mobile.
For example, this pattern labels the link for assistive technology while treating the image as decorative because the link already has an accessible name:

<img src="/assets/instagram-icon.png" alt="" width="32" height="32">
</a>
Replace the example profile and asset paths with your own. If you omit the link’s accessible label, the image needs alternative text that identifies the destination, such as “Instagram.”
Troubleshooting a downloaded icon or SVG
- The SVG is unexpectedly huge: It may contain an embedded raster image or unnecessary metadata; inspect it in a vector editor.
- The gradient is missing: The file may be incomplete or use SVG features unsupported by the rendering workflow. Try a current browser or the authorized PNG.
- The mark appears black or monochrome: You may have a monochrome glyph, a CSS mask, or a broken conversion rather than the expected colored icon.
- A white box appears around it: The image may lack transparency. Check the source rather than assuming the background can be removed without altering the mark.
- The result is blurry: The source is probably a raster image being displayed larger than its intended size. Get a suitable high-resolution or vector asset.
- The shape or colors look wrong: The download may be unofficial, modified, or from a different period. Compare it with current official resources.
- The wordmark looks like different lettering: A wordmark is artwork, not ordinary text that can reliably be recreated with a similar-looking font.
Re-download from the official source, check the file in a browser and vector editor, and use the official PNG if permitted SVG rendering remains unreliable. Do not repair a questionable asset by tracing or recoloring it for commercial use.
