Some Xperia XZ1-family owners reported spontaneous restarts, and later software updates appear to have stopped the problem for at least some users. But Sony’s published XZ1 release notes do not name random reboots as a specific fix, and the available reports do not establish one defect affecting every XZ1. If your phone still restarts, check its software, test it without the SIM and microSD card, and then work through app and hardware causes before wiping data.
What XZ1 owners reported
Owners described phones restarting unexpectedly during ordinary use. That is different from a restart after installing an update, a one-off app crash, a freeze that needs a forced restart, or a boot loop in which the phone repeatedly restarts before reaching the home screen. A phone that simply powers off may instead have a depleted or failing battery; a scheduled restart or a defective SIM or microSD card can also look like a general reboot fault.
User discussions contain reports of intermittent or recurring restarts, including reports that the problem went away after an update, but they are anecdotal and do not establish a single cause. The XZ1, XZ1 Compact and XZ Premium are separate models; evidence about one should not be treated as proof about all three. No cited Sony release note acknowledges a universal XZ1 reboot defect.
Which firmware versions matter?
| Device or evidence | Build and date detail | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Xperia XZ1, Android 8 Oreo | Build 47.1.A.16.20; Sony’s US record lists the September 1, 2018 security patch level. | Sony’s release record identifies the build, but does not explicitly list random reboots as a fix. Sony’s Android 8 software page. |
| Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Dual SIM, Android 9 Pie | Build 47.2.A.10.62; Sony’s US record lists the May 1, 2019 security patch level. | This is a later documented XZ1 build, not a Sony-confirmed reboot-specific patch. Sony’s Android 9 software page. |
| Related Xperia XZ Premium modem investigation | Firmware 47.2.A.2.33, reported as released in December 2018. | A technical community investigation reported that it stopped reproducible modem-reset crashes on tested XZ Premium devices. This is related evidence, not confirmation of an XZ1-specific fix. Investigation and discussion. |
Sony’s release availability can vary by carrier, market and region, so two phones with the same model name may not receive a build at the same time. Sony also says an update notification may not appear when the phone has less than 500 MB of free internal storage. The cited XZ1 records do not support naming one confirmed build as the universal fix.

- Precisely cut openings to allow full access to all the functions of your phone.
- Clear, slim, lightweight case design that adds minimal bulk to your phone.
- Premium anti-UV TPU material effectively delays the case from yellowing to a 6-month use, longer than normal 3 months’ period.
Check the installed build and available updates
- Open Settings.
- Tap System and then About phone, or go directly to About phone, depending on the installed Android version.
- Find Build number and record the complete value. Note the security patch level too, if shown.
- Compare the details with Sony’s support page for the exact model and region: Android 8 and Android 9.
- Check for an over-the-air update. If the phone cannot update normally, Sony lists Xperia Companion on its XZ1 downloads page. Confirm that the current Companion installation recognizes your legacy phone before relying on it; availability for older models may vary.
Troubleshoot in a safe order
1. Back up before disruptive steps
Copy important photos, messages, contacts, authenticator data and files before attempting a reset or software repair. Sony warns that a factory reset or software repair can erase internal content. If the phone cannot stay on long enough to make a backup, avoid repeated repair attempts and seek help with data recovery or diagnosis.
2. Test without the SIM card
Power the phone off, remove the SIM, then use it long enough to see whether the restart pattern changes. Sony recommends this test; if the phone behaves normally without the SIM, the card may be damaged and may need replacement. Reboots during calls, mobile-data use, weak reception, tower handoffs, or after a carrier change make cellular service worth investigating. Test offline or on Wi-Fi rather than assuming the modem is at fault.
3. Test without the microSD card
Power down and remove the microSD card, then test again. Sony includes SD-card removal in its troubleshooting guidance because a failing or corrupted card can contribute to crashes or restarts. If removing it helps, copy its contents cautiously and replace the card rather than immediately trusting it again.
4. Use Safe mode to check downloaded apps
Safe mode disables downloaded apps while leaving preinstalled software available. If restarts stop in Safe mode, uninstall recently installed or updated apps one at a time and test after each change. Sony says improved behavior in Safe mode can indicate an app is interfering; it is a clue, not conclusive proof, since storage corruption or hardware trouble can produce misleading results. See Sony’s shutdown troubleshooting guidance for its Safe mode and component checks.

5. Record the conditions around each restart
Note the time, location, battery level, signal strength, whether a call or mobile data was active, whether the phone was charging, and which app was open. A pattern tied to one place or cellular activity points toward a different investigation than a sudden battery-percentage drop or restarts only under heavy use.
6. Force-restart only if the phone is stuck
For an unresponsive XZ1, hold Power + Volume Up for about six seconds. Release after one vibration to force a restart. Sony’s XZ1 user guide says to continue holding for several more seconds if you intend to shut the phone down fully; it vibrates three times before turning off. This procedure does not erase data, but do not interrupt a phone that is actively completing an update.
7. Reset or repair only after backup
A factory reset can help if system files, app state or an interrupted update are corrupted, but it is disruptive and cannot rule out a hardware or radio fault. Xperia Companion software repair is another option if the phone is recognized; Sony says it erases internal storage, and you may need the Google account credentials previously used on the phone afterward. If the device is stuck in a reboot loop, repeated normal boot attempts are unlikely to be a useful substitute for a repair diagnosis. Follow Sony’s repair and reset guidance.

A modem fault is one possible explanation when restarts occur during mobile-data use, in weak-signal areas, or at particular locations, especially if service drops just before the reboot and the phone behaves normally offline or without its SIM. Low-level crash logs identifying a modem fatal error would be stronger evidence than timing alone.

A technical investigation of Sony devices using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 platform reported repeated crashes with pstore logs reading “Fatal error on the modem,” and said firmware 47.2.A.2.33 stopped the reproducible problem on tested Xperia XZ Premium units. That is useful context for a possible failure mode, but it does not establish that the regular XZ1 had the same fault or that this build was its fix.
When to suspect hardware or stop troubleshooting
- Restarts continue with no SIM, no microSD card and no downloaded apps, including in Safe mode.
- The phone reboots while charging or under load, becomes unusually hot, or its battery percentage drops sharply.
- The battery is swollen or drains rapidly. Stop using and charging a swollen battery and arrange safe service.
- The phone has been dropped, exposed to liquid, or repaired before.
- Restarts persist after a clean software repair, or the phone cannot boot reliably enough to complete one.
An aging battery can cause power loss, but replacing it is not a guaranteed fix: radio, storage, power-management or board-level faults are also possible. Stop troubleshooting and seek qualified repair if the phone becomes dangerously hot, has liquid damage, or cannot remain powered long enough to protect your data. Sony’s repair portal can direct owners to available service; cost and support depend on location and whether the XZ1 is still serviceable.
Buying or keeping an XZ1 in 2026
The XZ1 is a discontinued, older phone, and the available Sony records do not establish a fresh reboot-specific patch or ongoing security updates. If considering a used unit, verify its exact model, carrier and country, battery condition, firmware status, SIM compatibility and stability under cellular use; also check that returns are allowed. A phone that still reboots after clean software repair, has an unsafe battery, or needs costly board work may not be worth repairing. Sony’s XZ1 support page lists support downloads and Xperia Companion, but that listing alone does not guarantee current recognition or repair availability.
