The available evidence does not independently confirm a complete Crunchyroll-wide outage. PlayStation’s service page was operational when checked, while user reports also mentioned PS5 and Xbox problems. That leaves several possibilities: a Crunchyroll service or authentication incident, a PS4 app problem, an account or regional issue, or a failure in your own network path.
Use the checks below to identify which layer is failing before you reinstall the app, change DNS, or replace hardware.
Is Crunchyroll down on PS4?
“Unable to Connect” is a generic symptom. It means the PS4 app could not reach Crunchyroll, complete authentication, or load data through the current network path; it does not prove that your Wi-Fi is offline or that Crunchyroll is globally down.
Check the PlayStation service-status page, but remember that a green PSN result covers PlayStation services, not every Crunchyroll backend or third-party app component. Also test Crunchyroll in a browser or on a phone. Crunchyroll’s loading guidance recommends another device or browser to separate a device-specific failure from a broader access problem (official troubleshooting guidance).

Reddit users reported PlayStation failures on August 6–7, 2026, including PS4 and PS5 symptoms, but those posts are anecdotal and do not establish a confirmed outage (user report; additional report).
Quick tests that identify the failing layer
- Open another internet-connected app on the PS4.
- Try Crunchyroll on a phone or computer using the same Wi-Fi.
- If possible, test the phone over cellular data.
- Try another show or episode, and note whether subtitles and dubs behave differently.
- Check whether another Crunchyroll device fails with the same account.

Fix “Unable to Connect” on PS4
1. Fully close and restart the console
Press the controller’s PS button, choose Power > Turn Off PS4, and wait until the console light stops blinking. Rest Mode is not a complete shutdown.
2. Power-cycle the PS4
- Turn the PS4 off completely.
- Unplug its power cable.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable and start the console.
- Open Crunchyroll again.

3. Update the Crunchyroll app
- Highlight Crunchyroll on the PS4 home screen.
- Press Options.
- Select Check for Update.
- Install any update and relaunch the app.

Go to Settings > System > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Crunchyroll currently lists PS4 as supported with minimum system software version 10.008 (supported devices and versions).
5. Restart your router
- Unplug the router or modem.
- Wait 10–30 seconds.
- Reconnect it and wait for the connection to return.
- Test Crunchyroll again.
Crunchyroll recommends checking router power, reducing congestion, and keeping the app and device software current (connectivity guidance).

6. Sign out and back in
Re-authentication can resolve a stale session. If only one title fails, test another before treating the problem as a service outage.
Advanced fixes if the basic steps fail
Reinstall Crunchyroll
- Highlight Crunchyroll and press Options.
- Select Delete.
- Restart the PS4.
- Open PlayStation Store and search for Crunchyroll.
- Select Download and sign in again.
Deleting the app does not delete your Crunchyroll account, but you will need to log in again. Reinstallation is an official troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed cure (installation guide).

Test a phone hotspot
Connect the PS4 temporarily to a phone hotspot. If Crunchyroll works there, investigate your home router, ISP, DNS or filtering. If it still fails, the app, account, console software or Crunchyroll service is more likely. Mobile data charges may apply.

Change DNS only after simpler checks
On PS4, go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection, select Wi-Fi or LAN, choose Custom, then use:

Set IP Address Settings: Automatic, DHCP Host Name: Do Not Specify, DNS Settings: Manual, MTU Settings: Automatic, and Proxy Server: Do Not Use. Save, turn off and disconnect the PS4 for 30 seconds, then restart it. These settings may help DNS-resolution or routing problems, but cannot repair a Crunchyroll outage, account failure, damaged installation or unsupported software. Yes. Crunchyroll’s current supported-devices documentation lists PS4, subject to the minimum system software version 10.008. A connection failure should not be treated as proof that PS4 support has ended.

When to contact Crunchyroll Support
Contact support after testing another device or network and completing the update, restart and reinstall steps. Include:
- PS4 model and system software version
- Crunchyroll app version
- Country or region
- Whether every title or only specific episodes fail
- Whether subtitles, dubs or both are affected
- The exact “Unable to Connect” wording and any other error details
- A screenshot or video, if available
- Every troubleshooting step already attempted
Crunchyroll says support is available 24/7 and requests these details for PlayStation playback cases (support instructions).
Should you switch devices or change your subscription?
If Crunchyroll works in a browser, on mobile, or on another device, that is a practical workaround while the PS4 issue is isolated. It does not prove the PS4 hardware is defective, so buying a new console based on this symptom alone is premature.
Do not upgrade or start a new subscription to solve a connection error. Crunchyroll’s U.S. plans are listed at its Premium page; the February 2, 2026 announcement lists monthly prices of $9.99 for Fan, $13.99 for Mega Fan and $17.99 for Ultimate Fan, with a limited-time annual offer also described (pricing announcement). A PS4 app failure is not fixed by Premium membership.
If you are billed through PlayStation, subscription management and cancellation follow PlayStation account settings (PlayStation subscription guidance).
Status note
August 18, 2026: Available evidence did not confirm a complete Crunchyroll outage. The PlayStation status page showed services operational, while user reports described failures across PlayStation platforms. Because a green PSN page cannot clear Crunchyroll’s own systems, check both services again if the error continues.
