IKEA Kreativ launched on June 22, 2022. It lets shoppers photograph a room, create an interactive representation, remove existing furniture digitally, and place IKEA products into the space. The experience remains available in supported IKEA markets, with features varying by country, device and app version.

What IKEA Kreativ actually is
IKEA Kreativ is a shoppable spatial-design system rather than a chatbot that invents a decorative image. It combines room scanning, computer vision, machine learning, computational photography and 3D mixed-reality graphics to show IKEA furnishings in a customer’s own space.
The underlying technology came from Geomagical Labs, acquired by Ingka Group in April 2020. IKEA says the system recognizes indoor objects and geometry, reconstructs a room in 3D and can erase existing furniture from the scene.

That makes Kreativ different from three related categories:
- Traditional room planners use manually entered measurements and catalogue objects.
- Augmented-reality preview tools usually overlay a product through a phone camera in real time.
- Generative-AI room apps create or alter pictures for style inspiration, but may invent furniture, colors or dimensions.
Kreativ’s main strength is connecting a real room to identifiable IKEA products that can potentially be saved and purchased.
How the room scan and redesign workflow works
- Open Kreativ. Start through the IKEA app or the IKEA home-design website. Exact entry points and capabilities differ by market.
- Launch the IKEA Kreativ Scene Scanner. Use the app to photograph the room from multiple positions, following its capture prompts.
- Wait for processing. The photographs are combined into a wide-angle, interactive room representation. IKEA describes the result as an editable 3D replica with dimensions and perspective.
- Clear the scene. Erase some or all existing furniture. The system reconstructs the background where objects were removed, though artifacts can remain.
- Add IKEA products. Browse the available catalogue and place items into the reconstructed room.
- Adjust the layout. Depending on the product and feature support, items can be moved, rotated, swapped, stacked or hung.
- Save, share or shop. Saved designs can be shared, and supported products can be added to a cart. Check the local IKEA site for current stock, price, delivery and account requirements.

What the AI is doing
IKEA says Kreativ uses neural networks trained to recognize indoor objects and geometry, stereo-vision algorithms to perceive space in 3D, computational photography to create expansive room imagery, mixed-reality graphics and algorithms that erase furniture.

Later bedroom features added an AI-powered rules engine for logical product-placement suggestions. In the United Kingdom, United States and Canada, IKEA said users could scan and design a whole bedroom, explore bedding combinations and receive smart placement suggestions: Ingka Group’s bedroom update.
These descriptions support claims about recognition, reconstruction, object removal, visualization and placement assistance. They do not establish that Kreativ autonomously produces a complete renovation plan or reliably makes aesthetic decisions like a human designer.

Can you use it online, and is it free?
Yes, IKEA describes Kreativ as available through its websites and app, although the division between scanning, editing and shopping can differ by country and device. The initial U.S. rollout targeted iOS and laptop users, with Android described as coming later. IKEA Canada says the service is available in the app and online at IKEA.ca through Apple and Google app stores: IKEA Canada’s announcement.
Launch announcements for the United States, Canada and Australia described the complete room-design experience as free. That means access to the tool, not free furniture, delivery, assembly, installation or planning services. Current sign-in and feature requirements should be confirmed on the local IKEA site.

What products and rooms can it show?
Kreativ is built around IKEA’s own catalogue. At launch, IKEA described more than 50 interactive 3D showrooms, plus product combinations and room concepts. The catalogue connection makes placed products identifiable and potentially shoppable, but it also means the tool is not a brand-neutral marketplace containing every furniture maker.

In December 2024, Ingka Group said Kreativ had more than seven million active designers per year and was available in 29 IKEA markets worldwide, excluding China. Those are IKEA’s reported figures from that date, not an independently audited August 2026 total: Ingka Group’s availability report. The scan is useful for visualizing arrangements, but it should not be treated as construction-grade surveying. “Accurate dimensions” is IKEA’s description of the technology, not a guarantee that every wall, opening or product clearance is measured well enough for installation or safety-critical decisions.
Measure these items yourself before ordering
- Wall lengths, ceiling height and the dimensions of alcoves or recesses.
- Doorways, hallways, stairs and elevators needed to bring furniture inside.
- Window, radiator, outlet, vent and switch locations.
- Walking clearances, cabinet-door swings and drawer openings.
- Load, wall-fixing and ventilation requirements for the particular product.
Use the design as a planning aid, then compare every item with its current product page and your own measurements.

Where Kreativ can fail
- Occlusion and clutter: People, pets, piles of objects and reflective surfaces can make capture or background removal harder.
- Unusual geometry: Sloped ceilings, curved or partial walls, mezzanines and open-plan spaces may reconstruct poorly.
- Removal artifacts: Erasing furniture can leave visibly imperfect floors, walls or shadows.
- Hidden constraints: A plausible image does not confirm wall strength, floor loading, ventilation, code compliance or clearance around radiators and outlets.
- Catalogue changes: Colors, dimensions, prices, stock and delivery dates can change after a design is saved.
- Device and market differences: Scanning may require the app and a compatible phone, while editing may be available in a browser; catalogues and features vary by country.
- Cloud dependence: IKEA says virtual rooms are stored in the cloud so designs can be accessed and shared across locations. Review the current IKEA privacy information before uploading images containing people, children, documents, addresses or valuables.

- Families sharing a proposed arrangement.

Poor fit
- Kitchen, bathroom, electrical, structural or accessibility planning.
- Confirming that a product will pass through a specific doorway or stairwell.
- Rooms dominated by non-IKEA products.
- Projects requiring code checks, professional drawings or construction measurements.
Bottom line
IKEA Kreativ is a real AI- and computer-vision-powered tool, but the accurate story is an established platform launched in 2022—not a newly launched 2026 product. It is most useful for turning a photograph-based room scan into a visual, IKEA-linked shopping plan. Use it to compare ideas and products, then verify dimensions, clearances, stock and installation requirements yourself.
