The collection exceeded the drive’s previous high of 128,699 pounds, set in 2014. It did not exceed the separate 138,174-pound Guinness single-day e-waste figure cited for 2014.
What happened at the Houston drive
The ABC13 Earth Day E-Cycle Drive was held Friday, April 24, 2026, at CompuCycle, 8019 Kempwood Drive, Houston, Texas 77055. Residents dropped off unwanted electronics for collection and recycling.
ABC13 reported a final total of 132,293 pounds. That is approximately 66.1 U.S. short tons, calculated by dividing the reported weight by 2,000. The figure is the amount collected at the event; it is not a documented weight of material already turned into new products.
ABC13’s coverage identifies the total as a new record for the drive. It does not establish how many residents, households, vehicles or organizations contributed, nor does it provide an item-by-item breakdown.

Which record was broken?
| Measure | Weight | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 ABC13 Earth Day E-Cycle Drive | 132,293 pounds | New record for the ABC13 drive, according to ABC13 coverage |
| Previous ABC13-drive high | 128,699 pounds | Set in 2014 |
| Guinness single-day figure cited in event coverage | 138,174 pounds | A separate 2014 Guinness claim; the 2026 total is below it |
The distinction matters. Saying that residents “broke the world record” would overstate the available evidence. The documented result is an event record for the ABC13 collection, while the cited Guinness number belongs to a different record claim and year. Neither source confirms new Guinness certification for the 2026 total.

What residents brought—and what is not yet clear
The coverage describes the load broadly as unwanted electronics. It does not publish a complete, verified list of accepted items for the 2026 drive. Residents should not assume that every type of electronic product, battery or appliance was accepted under the same conditions.

Before taking equipment to any collection site, check the operator’s current rules for items such as:
- Computers, laptops, monitors and peripherals
- Televisions, including older CRT sets
- Phones, tablets, chargers and cables
- Printers and other small electronics
- Loose, damaged or swollen lithium-ion batteries
Programs may set quantity limits, charge for televisions or other difficult-to-process equipment, or direct batteries and hazardous materials to a separate program. The available reporting does not establish whether the ABC13 event had fees, residency restrictions or item limits.
What happens after drop-off
According to the event coverage, CompuCycle sorts the collected equipment. The report says hard drives would be wiped and that usable materials would be processed for incorporation into new consumer products. Those are statements about the operator’s reported handling process, not a measured outcome for every item in the 132,293-pound load.

Reuse
A working device or component can remain in service with another user. Reuse usually retains more of the device’s original manufacturing effort than dismantling it, but it requires functional testing and appropriate data protection.
Refurbishment
Refurbishment involves repairing, testing and preparing equipment for another user. The available event reports do not say what share of the collection was refurbished.

Material recycling
Recyclers dismantle equipment and recover materials such as metals, plastics and glass. Some fractions can be sent to downstream processors for use in manufacturing. No source supplied for this event gives percentages for material recovery.

- Space Saving Profile - The Highboy bin is perfect for tight or compact spaces; its narrow design and sleek shape make it ideal for the kitchen, garage, office, or other areas where space is limited while still large enough for household recycling.
- Easy Bag Removal - This indoor or outdoor recycle bin was designed with a tapered shape and vented sides to make it simple to remove a trash bag. Eliminate the struggle to remove a full bag of waste. The recommended bag size for ideal use is 33 gallons.
- Dustpan Edge - Sweep debris directly into the slim trash can with a dustpan edge that eliminates the need for a separate dustpan, making it easy and efficient to clean. The waste container is also made with smooth plastic to ensure easy cleaning.
- Swing Top Lid – The Highboy comes with the premium feature for functionality; a swing top lid to conceal trash while also providing easy access to discard waste. Remove the lid to empty the receptacle and reattach it with ease.
- Easy to Carry - Designed with you in mind, the Highboy durable plastic recycling bin has sturdy pass-through handles on top and a hand groove on the bottom. This makes moving the heavy-duty garbage can easier than ever.
Residual disposal
Some parts cannot be economically recovered and require regulated handling. The reporting does not quantify how much of the collection entered this stream or identify every downstream processor.
Why electronics need a dedicated waste stream
Electronics can contain hazardous substances, including lead and mercury, while also containing recoverable metals and plastics. Improper disposal can expose people and the environment to those substances; controlled collection allows a recycler to separate useful materials and manage hazardous fractions. An explanation from the Oak Ridge Associated Universities recycling program describes these risks and benefits: ORAU’s e-waste event guidance.
The record weight demonstrates that convenient collection can draw a substantial response. It does not, by itself, show how much pollution was avoided or how much of Houston’s overall e-waste stream was addressed.

Protect personal data before recycling
Dropping off a device does not automatically make its data unrecoverable. ABC13’s report says CompuCycle wipes hard drives, but it does not specify the sanitization standard, verification method or documentation provided to each household.
- Back up what you need. Copy photos, contacts and documents to a trusted device or service.
- Sign out and remove access. Log out of accounts, disable device-lock services and remove SIM and memory cards.
- Reset ordinary household devices. Use the manufacturer’s factory-reset process on phones, tablets and computers.
- Ask the operator what “wiped” means. For sensitive information, request the sanitization method and whether a receipt or certificate is available.
- Escalate high-risk data. Business, medical, financial, legal and government records may require documented media sanitization or physical destruction when wiping cannot be trusted.
A factory reset is a useful household precaution, but it is not automatically equivalent to verified sanitization for highly sensitive data.
Batteries, televisions and other special cases
- Lithium-ion batteries: Damaged, crushed or short-circuited batteries can cause fires. Keep loose batteries out of ordinary trash and curbside recycling unless the local program explicitly accepts them. Follow the operator’s instructions for isolating terminals.
- Swollen or leaking batteries: Do not put them in a normal collection box without specific approval. Contact the program for handling instructions.
- CRT televisions and monitors: These can be expensive to process and may carry fees or limits. Confirm acceptance before transporting a heavy unit.
- Working equipment: Repair, donate or use a verified refurbishment channel when data can be securely removed and the device remains useful.
If you missed the event
The April 24 drive has passed. For a year-round option, start with Houston or Harris County’s current electronics-recycling guidance, then compare a manufacturer take-back program, retailer collection point or certified recycler. Confirm accepted items, fees, quantity limits, residency rules and data-destruction documentation before loading a vehicle.
Do not place electronics in ordinary trash unless local authorities explicitly allow it. Ask any recycler where unusable fractions go, whether downstream facilities are certified and how hazardous components are managed. A convenient drop-off is valuable, but “recycling” can include reuse, dismantling, material recovery and regulated residual disposal rather than one uniform outcome.
