Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL into System32. The safest repair is to identify what is requesting the file, remove any obsolete IIS reference, and then repair or reinstall the matching IIS feature if the server genuinely needs it.
Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that best matches your computer:
- The error appears while IIS starts or a website starts: inspect IIS Manager and the server configuration for a stale
md5filt.dllISAPI filter entry. - You run an old Windows Server or legacy IIS installation: repair IIS from matching Windows installation media or reinstall the required IIS component.
- You use modern Windows 10, Windows 11, or current IIS: do not copy the old file into a system folder. Modern IIS uses
authmd5.dllfor Digest Authentication, so the request formd5filt.dllusually indicates an obsolete configuration or application dependency. - The file disappeared after antivirus detection: inspect Windows Security Protection History before restoring anything.
- The error appears in an unrelated desktop program or game: determine why that program is looking for an IIS server component. Its installer may be damaged, the reference may be stale, or the request may be suspicious.
- Several protected Windows files are failing: run DISM first and SFC afterward.
- Only a 32-bit application pool or legacy site fails: check IIS filter bitness settings and the application pool’s 32-bit configuration.
- The error began after a known update or software removal: consider System Restore or restoring the server from a known-good backup.
What md5filt.dll actually is
md5filt.dll is described in historical IIS inventories as “Sample Filter DLL.” It was associated with older Microsoft Internet Information Services installations, particularly IIS 5 and IIS 6-era systems, and was historically found under:
%WinDir%System32inetsrvmd5filt.dll
That path does not mean the file is a general-purpose Windows DLL. System32inetsrv is the IIS server directory. The file belongs to the IIS web-server stack and was used as a legacy ISAPI filter associated with Digest Authentication.

IIS 6 shipped with Windows Server 2003. Both that IIS generation and Windows Server 2003 are obsolete and unsupported. Do not mix a file from an old Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 installation with a modern IIS installation.
Modern IIS uses the native DigestAuthenticationModule. Microsoft’s IIS documentation identifies the modern module as:
%WinDir%System32inetsrvAuthmd5.dll
The modern feature is configured through system.webServer/security/authentication/digestAuthentication, not by blindly copying md5filt.dll. See Microsoft’s IIS feature-to-configuration reference and IIS modules overview.
There is no authoritative current Microsoft download page offering md5filt.dll as an independent redistributable. Microsoft distributes IIS components as part of Windows and its supported server roles, not as a generic DLL download.
Fix 1: Remove a stale IIS filter reference
This is the most likely fix when the error appears during IIS startup, when a site starts, or when a legacy website is activated.
Inspect the filter in IIS Manager
- Press Windows, type IIS Manager, and open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- In the Connections pane, expand the computer name.
- Expand Sites and select the website that fails.
- In the Features View, double-click ISAPI Filters.
- Look for a filter named
md5filt, or any entry whose executable path ends withmd5filt.dll. - Select the entry and read its path and status.
- Check the server-level ISAPI Filters view as well, because a filter can be inherited by multiple sites.
If the filter is not required by a known legacy application, record its name and path, then remove the stale entry. Restart the affected site or IIS afterward.
To restart IIS from an elevated Command Prompt:
iisreset
A successful repair means IIS starts without requesting md5filt.dll and the affected site loads normally. If the same error returns, a site-level web.config, the server’s ApplicationHost.config, or a third-party installer may be recreating the entry.
Inspect the configuration directly
Do not edit the configuration until you have a backup.

- Navigate to the
system.webServer/isapiFilterssection. - Search the collection for
md5filtor the full DLL path.
You can also inspect the configuration files with an administrator account. The central IIS configuration is commonly stored at:
%WinDir%System32inetsrvconfigApplicationHost.config
A site may also contain a web.config file with an inherited or local ISAPI filter declaration.

If the application genuinely requires the old filter, do not simply restore the entry and ignore the error. Confirm which application installed it, whether it supports the current Windows version, and whether it can be migrated to supported IIS authentication.
Fix 2: Install the supported IIS feature you actually need
Installing IIS can help only when the computer needs IIS and the required role service is missing. It will not make an unrelated game or desktop application work, and it will not automatically restore an obsolete legacy filter.

Modern IIS separates Digest Authentication from ISAPI Filters. The relevant feature identifiers commonly include:
Web-Digest-Auth
Web-ISAPI-Filter
Feature names vary between Windows generations, so verify them first.
Check available IIS features
On Windows Server:
- Right-click Start and select Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Terminal (Admin).
- Run:
Get-WindowsFeature *IIS*
- Review the displayed feature names and installation states.
- Note whether the required IIS role services are available and already installed.
To install the features on a compatible Windows Server installation, an administrator can use:
Install-WindowsFeature Web-ISAPI-Filter,Web-Digest-Auth
Use the exact feature names reported by the operating system. If the command reports that a feature is unavailable, do not substitute a random package or DLL. Use Server Manager or the installation media appropriate for that Windows release.
Install through Server Manager
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Add Roles and Features.
- Select Role-based or feature-based installation.
- Choose the target server.
- Select Web Server (IIS).
- Expand the IIS role services.
- Select ISAPI Filters if the application requires ISAPI filters.
- Select Digest Authentication only if the site genuinely uses IIS Digest Authentication.
- Continue through the wizard and select Install.
- Restart IIS and test the site.
Microsoft documents the relevant IIS role services in Install typical IIS workloads and the filter configuration in ISAPI Filters.
Do not enable Digest Authentication merely because the filename contains “md5.” Digest Authentication has specific operational requirements, including domain integration in supported deployments. Microsoft also documents the security and compatibility concerns around Microsoft Digest Authentication.
Fix 3: Repair Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC
Run these commands when IIS files or other protected Windows components may be damaged. They are not guaranteed to restore an obsolete IIS 5 or IIS 6 file on a modern computer.
Run DISM first
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows if DISM requests it.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that Windows uses for system-file repair. Microsoft explains this process in Repair a Windows image.

Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart the computer and test IIS or the application again.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, repeat the original action that produced the error. If it reports that it could not repair some files, review the CBS log and return to the IIS configuration and feature checks. SFC repairs protected Windows files; it does not understand every third-party application dependency and should not be treated as a universal DLL downloader.
The manual process of comparing DISM and SFC results, identifying the damaged component, and repeating repairs can be time-consuming. Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
If md5filt.dll disappeared immediately after an antivirus event, check whether security software quarantined it.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open the detection details and inspect the original file path, publisher, and threat name.
A file found at the expected IIS path is different from one found in a temporary folder, a user profile, or an unrelated application directory. A user-writable location deserves malware investigation rather than blind restoration.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the expected IIS directory.
- Its publisher and digital signature are consistent with Microsoft.
- The IIS installation is known and legitimate.
- Your security team or antivirus vendor has confirmed a false positive.
- The file matches the operating system, IIS generation, and architecture.
Microsoft warns that restored files may be detected again. Review Protection History and Microsoft’s guidance for restoring quarantined files.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to force an old server binary back onto the computer.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit legacy ISAPI filter cannot automatically be replaced with a 64-bit file, and the reverse is also true. IIS supports filter bitness conditions, including bitness32 and bitness64.
If only a 32-bit application pool fails:
- Open IIS Manager.
- Select Application Pools.
- Right-click the affected pool.
- Select Advanced Settings.
- Find Enable 32-Bit Applications.
- Confirm whether the application requires True or False.
- Check the ISAPI filter’s bitness precondition in the filter configuration.
- Restart the application pool.
Do not copy files between Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows 10, and Windows 11 installations. Matching the operating system build, IIS generation, service-pack level, architecture, dependencies, and signature matters. A file with the right name can still be incompatible.
Fix 6: Investigate an unrelated application or driver
If a desktop application or game reports md5filt.dll, first identify why it is loading an IIS component.

- Note the full error window title and the program named in it.
- Open Task Manager and check the program’s location.
- Right-click the program, choose Open file location, and confirm that it belongs to software you installed.
- Check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for the parent program.
- Repair or reinstall that specific application from its official source.
- Run a full Windows Security scan if the program is unfamiliar or the DLL request comes from a temporary or user-writable directory.
Multiple Visual C++ packages, DirectX repairs, and .NET repairs are not relevant merely because a DLL error appears. Use those repairs only when the failing program specifically identifies one of those components.
If a driver or vendor utility is responsible, install the driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer or through Windows Update. Do not use a random DLL as a driver repair.
When several devices or old utilities are involved, manually finding the correct driver version can mean checking hardware IDs, architecture, and vendor release notes. Do not run:
regsvr32 md5filt.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An IIS ISAPI filter is normally loaded through IIS configuration and its filter interfaces, not registered as a general COM component.
The command may produce an entry-point error or change nothing. It does not repair a missing IIS role service, correct an obsolete filter path, or make a 32-bit file compatible with a 64-bit worker process. Microsoft explains the command’s registration behavior in the regsvr32 documentation.

Avoid DLL download sites websites and copied files from another computer. A replacement may have:
- The wrong architecture.
- The wrong Windows or IIS generation.
- A different service-pack level.
- Missing dependencies.
- An invalid or unexpected digital signature.
- Known security weaknesses.
- Malware added under a familiar filename.
The safe sources are the matching Windows installation media, the Windows component store, a supported IIS role installation, a verified server backup, or a Microsoft-provided update. Microsoft does not provide md5filt.dll as a general standalone download.
When System Restore or a full repair is appropriate
Use System Restore when the file and IIS configuration worked previously and the failure followed a known update, cleanup operation, or software removal.
- Press Windows, type Create a restore point, and open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the change.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restoration and restart Windows.
On a server, restoring a known-good backup may be safer than changing production IIS files manually. Back up IIS configuration and application data before making changes.

Do not expect a modern in-place repair to recreate an unsupported IIS 5 or IIS 6 dependency exactly.
Preventing the error from returning
After IIS works again:
- Remove obsolete
md5filt.dllreferences from server and site configuration. - Identify the installer or application that created the filter.
- Keep only the IIS role services the site actually uses.
- Migrate away from obsolete Digest Authentication and legacy ISAPI dependencies.
- Keep Windows and supported IIS components updated.
- Maintain a backup of
ApplicationHost.configand site configuration. - Monitor antivirus detections instead of restoring files automatically.
- Document whether each application pool is 32-bit or 64-bit.
A modern server specifically requesting md5filt.dll is usually signaling a legacy dependency, not a missing everyday Windows runtime. The long-term solution is to update or replace that dependency rather than preserving an old binary indefinitely.

Is md5filt.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Internet Information Services and historically described as “Sample Filter DLL.” Its presence alone does not prove that every copy with that filename is genuine. Verify its location, signature, and source.
Does every IIS installation include it?
No. The file belongs primarily to legacy IIS installations. Modern IIS uses authmd5.dll for Digest Authentication and does not require you to copy md5filt.dll into a Windows directory.

Should I look in System32 or SysWOW64?
The historical IIS path is:
%WinDir%System32inetsrvmd5filt.dll
It is not normally a standalone DLL placed directly in System32 or SysWOW64. The correct location depends on the IIS generation and architecture. Do not infer compatibility from the folder name alone.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Do not assume. Legacy IIS filters can be architecture-specific, and IIS supports explicit bitness conditions. Match the filter to the worker process and the operating system rather than choosing a file based on its name.
Will reinstalling IIS fix the error?
It may fix an incomplete or damaged supported IIS installation. It will not necessarily remove a stale configuration reference, restore an obsolete IIS 5/6 file on modern Windows, or repair an unrelated application.
Can SFC restore md5filt.dll?
SFC can repair protected Windows files when the correct component exists in the Windows component store. It is not guaranteed to restore an obsolete IIS file, and it cannot correct a stale IIS configuration entry.
