Markdown is a plain-text formatting style, which makes it a natural fit for pad. You can write headings, lists, links, code blocks, and simple emphasis without needing a word processor, and the file remains easy to read even before it is converted to HTML, PDF, or another format.
Using Markdown in pad mainly comes down to typing the right syntax, saving the file with the correct extension, and using another tool when you want to preview the formatted result. Since Notepad does not render Markdown visually, a clean plain-text workflow helps you avoid hidden formatting, encoding problems, and file extension mistakes.
What Markdown Is and Why It Works in Notepad
Markdown is a lightweight way to format plain text using simple, readable symbols. Instead of clicking toolbar buttons for headings, bold text, lists, links, or quotes, you type characters such as #, *, –, and []() directly into the document. For example, a line that starts with # becomes a top-level heading in a Markdown viewer, while text wrapped in two asterisks, such as **bold text**, is displayed as bold when rendered.
pad works well for Markdown because Markdown files are plain text files. They do not require hidden formatting, embedded style data, or a special word processor format. Notepad saves exactly what you type, which makes it a natural fit for writing Markdown source text. A Markdown file can be opened in Notepad, edited in another text editor, uploaded to a website, stored in Git, or converted to HTML or PDF without depending on Microsoft Word or another rich text application.

Markdown stays readable before it is converted
One of Markdown’s main strengths is that the raw text is still understandable even before it is previewed. A list written in pad with hyphens still looks like a list. A heading marked with ## is easy to recognize. A link written as OpenAI clearly shows both the link text and the destination. This makes Markdown practical for notes, documentation, blog drafts, README files, checklists, and technical instructions.
- Plain text: Markdown does not rely on proprietary formatting codes.
- Portable files: A .md file can be moved between Windows, macOS, Linux, and web tools.
- Version-control friendly: Changes are easy to track because the content is text.
- Easy conversion: Markdown can be rendered as HTML, PDF, DOCX, or other formats with external tools.
The main difference between pad and a dedicated Markdown editor is that Notepad does not show a live preview. It will not automatically render headings, links, tables, or bold text while you type. That limitation is manageable because Markdown is designed to be written without a visual editor. You can draft the content in Notepad first, then preview it later in a browser, a Markdown editor, an online previewer, or a converter such as Pandoc.
This plain text approach also helps avoid many formatting problems caused by rich text editors. pad will not insert smart quotes, hidden font changes, automatic spacing, or copied styling from web pages unless the characters themselves are pasted into the file. For clean Markdown, that predictability is useful: what you see in Notepad is the source that the Markdown tool will read. As long as you use the correct syntax and save the file with the right extension, Notepad can serve as a simple, dependable Markdown writing environment.
Setting Up Notepad for Markdown Writing
pad works well for Markdown because it saves plain text, but a few settings make it much easier to write clean, predictable files. Before you start typing headings, lists, links, or tables, open Notepad and adjust the workspace so you can see your text clearly and avoid hidden formatting problems. These setup steps are simple, but they help prevent common issues such as long lines running off the screen, inconsistent spacing, or files being saved with the wrong encoding.
The Tool Desk

In pad, enable Word Wrap so long Markdown paragraphs stay visible without horizontal scrolling. In newer versions of Notepad, you can usually find this under the View menu or through the settings icon. Word wrap does not insert actual line breaks into your file; it only changes how text appears on screen. This is useful because Markdown paragraphs are often written as normal continuous text, and wrapping makes them easier to edit.
Choose a readable font
Use a clear monospaced font such as Consolas, Cascadia Mono, or Courier New. A monospaced font gives every character the same width, which makes Markdown structure easier to check. For example, indentation in nested lists, spacing inside tables, and backticks around inline code are easier to spot when characters line up evenly. Increase the font size if needed; readability matters more than fitting many lines on the screen.
Use plain-text habits from the start
Markdown depends on ordinary characters, so avoid copying heavily formatted text directly from word processors, web pages, or email clients when possible. Smart quotes, nonbreaking spaces, and unusual dash characters can sometimes create inconsistent output after conversion. If you paste content into pad, review quotes, apostrophes, hyphens, and blank lines before saving. Keeping the source text simple makes it more portable across Markdown previewers, static site generators, documentation platforms, and code repositories.

Set up a simple writing folder
Create a dedicated folder for your Markdown files, such as Documents\Markdown or a project-specific folder like WebsiteDocs. Keeping files in one place makes it easier to preview them with external tools later and reduces the chance of saving drafts to the desktop or temporary folders. If your Markdown file will reference images, create a nearby folder such as images and use simple relative paths when adding image syntax later.

When you save your file, choose UTF-8 if pad offers an encoding option in the Save As dialog. UTF-8 is the safest choice for Markdown because it supports regular English text as well as accented letters, symbols, and non-English characters. It is also widely expected by Markdown processors and publishing systems. If your file contains special characters and the wrong encoding is used, those characters may appear as boxes, question marks, or garbled text when opened elsewhere.
Once pad is set up with word wrap, a readable font, a clean folder location, and UTF-8 saving in mind, you can treat it as a reliable Markdown editor. It will not provide live preview, syntax highlighting, or automatic formatting, but that simplicity is part of its strength. You see the exact plain-text source you are writing, which makes it easier to understand how Markdown works before previewing or converting it with another tool.
Writing Basic Markdown Syntax in Notepad
Once pad is set up for plain-text writing, you can start using Markdown by typing simple characters around your content. Markdown does not require menus, toolbars, or hidden formatting codes. What you type is what stays in the file, so a heading, list, link, or emphasis mark is created with visible punctuation such as #, *, –, and []().
For headings, place one or more hash symbols at the start of a line. Use a single # for the main title of a document, ## for major sections, and ### for subsections. Keep a space between the hash symbols and the heading text. For example, typing ## Installation Steps creates a second-level heading when the file is previewed in a Markdown viewer.
Common Markdown patterns to type in Notepad
- Bold text: type **important text** to make the words bold in a Markdown preview.
- Italic text: type *emphasized text* to make the words italic.
- Bulleted lists: start each line with – , such as – First item.
- Numbered lists: start each line with a number and period, such as 1. First step.
- Links: type link text.
- Images: type .
- Inline code: wrap short code or commands in backticks, such as `notepad`.
- Code blocks: place three backticks on the line before and after a longer code sample.
Lists are one of the easiest places to make mistakes in pad because spacing matters. For a clean bulleted list, put each item on its own line and start each item with the same marker, usually a hyphen followed by one space. For a numbered list, you can type 1., 2., and 3., or you can type 1. for every item and let many Markdown processors number the list automatically. If you nest list items, use spaces consistently before the nested item; two or four spaces are common, depending on the tool that previews the file.
Paragraphs in Markdown are separated by blank lines. In pad, press Enter twice between paragraphs instead of indenting the first line. A single line break may not always appear as a new line in the final preview, because many Markdown processors treat consecutive lines as part of the same paragraph. If you need a deliberate line break inside a paragraph, add two spaces at the end of the line before pressing Enter, or use a format supported by your preview tool.

Example of a small Markdown draft
A short pad Markdown document might begin with a heading, followed by a paragraph, a list, and a link. For example, you could type a title with # Project Notes, add a blank line, write a short paragraph, then create tasks using – Draft outline, – Review links, and – Export PDF. To reference a website, write something like Markdown Guide. When opened in a Markdown previewer, these plain-text marks become structured formatting.
Because pad does not highlight Markdown syntax, it helps to keep your writing visually tidy. Use blank lines around headings, lists, and code blocks. Avoid mixing tabs and spaces for indentation, especially in nested lists or code samples. Type straight quotes instead of relying on smart quotes from another editor, and paste text as plain text when possible. These habits keep the Markdown file predictable when you later preview it, upload it to a website, or convert it to HTML, PDF, or another format.

After writing Markdown in pad, the most important step is saving the file as a Markdown file rather than a normal text document. Markdown files are plain text, but they usually use the .md extension so editors, preview tools, static site generators, and publishing platforms can recognize them. If you save your document as notes.txt, the Markdown syntax is still there, but many tools will treat it as ordinary text until you rename it.
To save a Markdown file in pad, choose File > Save As. In the file name box, type the full name including the extension, such as README.md, article-draft.md, or meeting-notes.md. In the Save as type menu, choose All files instead of Text Documents (*.txt). This prevents Notepad from silently adding .txt to the end of the file name. If you leave the type set to text documents, a file named draft.md may actually become draft.md.txt.
- Use .md for most Markdown files: This is the standard extension recognized by GitHub, VS Code, many documentation tools, and Markdown previewers.
- Use .markdown only when needed: Some older systems accept .markdown, but .md is shorter and more widely used.
- Wrap the name in quotes if necessary: In older Windows setups, entering “draft.md” in the Save As dialog can help prevent Notepad from appending .txt.
- Avoid spaces in technical files: Names like install-guide.md or api-notes.md are easier to use in command-line tools than install guide.md.
Character encoding also matters. When saving from modern pad, choose UTF-8 if the encoding option is shown. UTF-8 handles common Markdown content safely, including curly quotes, accented characters, symbols, and non-English text. If a file is saved with the wrong encoding, preview tools may display strange characters, especially in documents copied from web pages, email clients, or word processors.
After saving, check the real extension in File Explorer. If Windows hides known file extensions, a file may appear as draft.md even though its full name is draft.md.txt. Open File Explorer, select View, then enable File name extensions. Once extensions are visible, you can rename the file correctly by removing the extra .txt. For example, change project-s.md.txt to project-notes.md. Windows may warn that changing the extension could make the file unusable; for Markdown, confirming the change is usually safe because the content is still plain text.
Previewing Markdown Outside of Notepad
pad can write Markdown, but it cannot render it. When you open a .md file in Notepad, you see the raw Markdown characters: hashes for headings, asterisks for emphasis, brackets for links, and hyphens for lists. To see how the document will look when formatted, you need to preview it in another tool. This step is useful before publishing a README, sending documentation, converting the file to HTML or PDF, or checking that tables, links, and lists are being interpreted correctly.

Open the file in a Markdown-aware editor
The simplest way to preview a Markdown file is to open it in an editor that includes a built-in preview pane. Tools such as Visual Studio Code, Typora, MarkText, and Obsidian can render Markdown while still letting you edit the plain text. For example, in Visual Studio Code, open your .md file, then use the Markdown preview command from the command palette or the preview button in the editor. This lets you keep writing in pad if you prefer, then open the same file elsewhere whenever you want to check the formatting.
Preview Markdown in a web browser or online tool
Another option is to use a browser-based Markdown previewer. Many websites let you paste Markdown into one pane and view the rendered output in another. This is convenient for quick checks, especially when you do not want to install extra software. Be careful with private content, passwords, internal documentation, customer data, or unpublished work; anything pasted into an online tool may leave your computer. For sensitive files, use an offline editor or a local converter instead.
- For quick visual checks: paste a small sample into a trusted online Markdown previewer.
- For private documents: use an offline desktop app with Markdown preview support.
- For GitHub README files: preview the file in a repository draft, pull request, or local editor that supports GitHub-flavored Markdown.
Convert Markdown to HTML or PDF
If you need a finished document rather than just a preview, convert the Markdown file to another format. Conversion tools such as Pandoc can turn .md files into HTML, PDF, DOCX, and other formats. Some Markdown editors also include export commands for PDF or HTML. This is helpful when you write the original content in pad but need to deliver a polished document to someone who does not use Markdown.
| Goal | Good option | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Check formatting quickly | Markdown preview editor | Review headings, lists, links, and tables |
| Share a readable document | Export to PDF | Send documentation or notes to non-technical readers |
| Publish on a website | Convert to HTML | Use Markdown content in a web page or static site |
| Check GitHub formatting | GitHub-flavored Markdown preview | Validate README files, tables, task lists, and code blocks |
When previewing, remember that Markdown can render slightly differently depending on the tool. GitHub, static site generators, taking apps, and document converters may support different extensions, especially for tables, checkboxes, footnotes, and automatic links. If your Markdown file is meant for a specific platform, preview it with that platform or with a tool that matches its Markdown rules. This prevents surprises such as broken tables, missing line breaks, or code blocks that do not display as expected.

pad is a plain text editor, which makes it a good place to write Markdown, but it also means you do not get built-in validation, live preview, or automatic cleanup. Most problems come from small text details: the wrong file extension, hidden formatting expectations, inconsistent spacing, or characters that look similar but behave differently when rendered by a Markdown parser.
Markdown file opens as plain text or will not preview correctly
If your file is named something like s.md.txt, Windows may be hiding the real extension. In File Explorer, enable File name extensions from the View menu, then rename the file so it ends in .md or .markdown. For example, use project-notes.md, not project-notes.md.txt. When saving from Notepad, choose All files in the Save as type field and type the full filename with the Markdown extension.
Headings, lists, or code blocks do not render as expected
Markdown depends heavily on spacing. A heading needs a space after the hash mark, such as # Heading, not #Heading. Bullet lists should use a consistent marker, such as hyphens or asterisks, and each list item should start on its own line. For nested lists, indent child items with spaces consistently. Fenced code blocks usually need three backticks before and after the code, each on its own line.

Line breaks look different after previewing
Pressing Enter once in pad may not create a visible line break in rendered Markdown because many Markdown processors treat a single newline as part of the same paragraph. To start a new paragraph, leave one blank line between blocks of text. To force a line break inside the same paragraph, some Markdown tools support two spaces at the end of a line, but that can be hard to see in Notepad. In most cases, using a blank line is cleaner and easier to maintain.
Smart punctuation, encoding, and pasted text cause problems
Text pasted from word processors, websites, email clients, or chat apps may include curly quotes, nonbreaking spaces, unusual dashes, or invisible characters. These can interfere with links, tables, front matter, or code examples. If something looks correct but renders incorrectly, retype the problem characters directly in pad. Pay special attention to quotation marks in links, backticks around inline code, and hyphens used for lists.
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| File saves as .txt | Select All files and include .md in the filename. |
| Heading does not render | Add a space after the # character. |
| Paragraphs run together | Insert a blank line between paragraphs. |
| Copied text behaves strangely | Retype suspicious punctuation or paste through a plain text step. |
If you work with Markdown often, keep a small test file with examples of headings, lists, links, images, tables, and code blocks. After writing in pad, open the file in your chosen Markdown previewer or converter and compare the output. This simple check catches most issues before you publish, upload, or share the document.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I actually write Markdown in Windows Notepad?
Yes, Markdown is plain text, so pad can create and edit Markdown files without any special features. You type Markdown symbols such as # for headings, **bold** for bold text, and - for lists directly into the file. Notepad will not show a live preview, so you need another app or website to see the formatted result.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I save a Markdown file correctly in Notepad?
Use File > Save As, then enter the filename with a .md extension, such as s.md. In the “Save as type” dropdown, choose “All files” so Notepad does not add .txt to the end. If available, choose UTF-8 encoding to avoid problems with special characters.
Why did Notepad save my file as file.md.txt?
This happens when pad is set to save as a text document instead of all files. To fix it, rename the file and remove the extra .txt, or save it again using “All files” in the Save As dialog. You may also need to enable file extensions in File Explorer so you can see the full filename.
How can I preview Markdown if Notepad does not render it?
You can open the .md file in a Markdown editor such as Visual Studio Code, Typora, or Mark Text to preview the formatting. You can also paste the text into an online Markdown previewer or upload it to platforms like GitHub, GitLab, or some documentation tools. For regular Markdown writing, using pad for drafting and a separate preview tool for checking is a simple workflow.
How do I avoid formatting problems when writing Markdown in Notepad?
Keep the file as plain text and avoid copying from rich text apps that may introduce curly quotes, unusual spaces, or hidden formatting. Use blank lines between headings, paragraphs, lists, and code blocks so Markdown parsers read the structure correctly. For code blocks, use consistent indentation or fenced code blocks with three backticks if your target Markdown tool supports them.
Bottom Line
pad is a simple, reliable place to write Markdown because it keeps your content in plain text and lets the Markdown syntax do the formatting work. Focus on clean basics like headings, lists, links, images, code blocks, and consistent spacing, then save your file with a .md extension using UTF-8 encoding when possible.
For the best workflow, write in pad, then preview or convert your file with a Markdown editor, browser extension, static site generator, or tool like Pandoc. If you keep your formatting consistent and check the rendered output before sharing, you can create clean Markdown documents without needing a dedicated writing app.
