One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhen a Raspberry Pi project stops booting the night before a demo, the fastest recovery follows a fixed order: identify the exact board, read what the Pi reports, check power, then check the boot medium. Only after those steps should you consider re-imaging the card or reflashing the bootloader, and both of those actions can erase data or depend on the model. This guide gives that sequence for a maker or hackathon team trying to get an existing project running again.
Before you troubleshoot, record four things
Write these down before you touch the hardware. Each one changes which later step applies.
- Board model and revision. Check the printed label on the board or the model listed in your project notes. Power, boot, and firmware advice differs between Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, Raspberry Pi 3 and earlier, Compute Modules, and Pi 400.
- Current boot medium. Note whether the Pi boots from a microSD card, a USB drive, an SSD, or network boot.
- Power supply. Note the adapter’s rated output and whether it is the one the project shipped with.
- Whether the files matter. If the project code, datasets, or demo assets exist only on the card, treat that card as the only copy until you have saved it elsewhere.
Step 1: Read what the Pi is telling you
A black screen has several possible causes, so record the symptom before changing anything. Raspberry Pi 4 and later flagship models can show bootloader diagnostics over HDMI. According to Raspberry Pi’s official diagnostic documentation, that screen can appear when the bootloader cannot boot from any boot media or network. Absent or defective media and incorrect network boot parameters are listed among the causes.
The green activity LED also reports failures as a pattern of long and short flashes. The official documentation publishes the full table, and you should check your model’s entry there rather than relying on memory. The sample meanings it gives are:

Write the pattern and the HDMI message, if any, in your recovery log. A specific code points you to a specific step below; a generic black screen does not.
Step 2: Check power for your specific model
Power problems are the most common cause of a Pi that will not start, and they can look like a corrupt card. Use the supply the board requires, not any phone charger that fits. Raspberry Pi’s official power recommendations are:
| Board | Recommended supply mode |
|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 | 5V / 5A |
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | 5V / 3A |
| Raspberry Pi 3 and earlier families | 5V / 2.5A |
These are the recommended modes listed in Raspberry Pi’s official documentation on the accessed pages, which carry no publication date, so confirm them against the current page before you buy a replacement adapter.

Attached devices add to the load. Disks and SSDs can need more power than the board supplies on its own, and the problem is worse with several drives. If the Pi boots with nothing attached and fails with a drive connected, the drive’s power draw is the likely cause. Use a powered USB hub or a supply with more headroom, and test with one device at a time.

Step 3: Verify the boot medium and rebuild it only if needed
Once power is confirmed, decide whether the existing card can still boot. A card that is missing, unreadable, or lacks a bootable image will produce the no-media or partition errors described above. Test it in a reader on another computer first. If the files are readable and the project is intact, the card may only need its boot partition checked, not a full rebuild.
Preserve the old card before you write anything
Writing a new image overwrites the selected storage device. Before you write, make a full image of the card to a file on another drive, or at minimum copy the project directories off it. Keep that copy unchanged until the demo is over.

Prepare a fresh card with Raspberry Pi Imager
Raspberry Pi Imager writes an operating system image to the storage device you select. Choose your board model, the operating system, and the target card, then write it. Raspberry Pi’s documented minimums are:
- Raspberry Pi OS (with desktop): at least 32GB of storage. A 32GB microSD card meets this minimum, though a card that meets the capacity does not guarantee the hardware is sound.
- Raspberry Pi OS Lite: at least 16GB of storage.
Confirm that your board supports the boot route you choose before you write the card. Re-imaging fixes a damaged or empty card, but it does not repair a failing power supply or a board fault.
Try USB boot only when the model supports it
USB mass-storage boot is available on specific device families. Older models have known problems with some USB devices, so do not assume a drive that works on a laptop will work on every Pi. Before you switch, verify three things: that your model supports USB boot, that the boot configuration is set up for it, and that the drive draws no more power than your supply provides. If the drive fails only when connected, go back to Step 2.

Step 4: Reflash the bootloader only for supported models
Flagship models since Raspberry Pi 4B, Compute Modules since CM4, and keyboard models since Pi 400 use an EEPROM bootloader that can be reflashed. Reflashing is the last firmware step, and it is model-specific. Use the official bootloader recovery procedure for your exact board, and use the bootloader recovery option in Raspberry Pi Imager as that procedure describes, which means selecting the storage device and writing the recovery image to it.
Do not reflash the bootloader on a board that is not in these families. Do not reflash it unless the LED pattern or HDMI diagnostics point to a bootloader problem, because it cannot recover a card that simply lacks a usable operating system.

This sequence is editorial advice for time-pressed teams, not an official Raspberry Pi procedure, and we have not tested it as a recovery result. When the original setup cannot be restored in time, keep the original card untouched, bring up a minimal known-good operating system on a separate card, and prove one essential function of the project, such as reading a sensor, driving the display, or running the core script. Restore optional features only after the essential function works on the Pi you have in hand.

What these steps do not cover
This guide does not identify your event, its rules, or its judging criteria, and it does not cover pin wiring, project code, or the operating system your project uses, since none of those were specified. Raspberry Pi documentation changes, especially model support, power recommendations, and Imager steps, so check the official pages for your model before acting on any figure here.
Some of the troubleshooting depends on your board. Use the official documentation as the reference and treat this sequence as a way to order the checks, not as a guarantee for every Raspberry Pi.
