The creation date and time appear near the title and author fields, and the modification date is shown alongside them when the file carries one. Without Acrobat, your operating system’s file details will show dates too, but those usually describe the file on disk rather than the dates stored inside the PDF, so the two can differ.
Check the dates in Adobe Acrobat
Adobe’s own guidance on PDF dates follows this sequence, and it is the most direct way to read the embedded document metadata.
- Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat.
- Select File > Properties.
- Select the Description tab.
- Read the creation date and time near the title and author. If a modification date is listed, note it separately, because it records the last change to the metadata rather than the original creation.
If the Description tab shows no creation date, the field is blank. That is a result you can report as-is, and the next sections explain what it does and does not tell you.
Check the dates without Acrobat
You do not need a PDF editor for a basic check. Two other routes are common, and they answer slightly different questions.

Desktop file properties
Right-click the PDF in your file manager and look for Properties, Get Info, or a similar file-information option. The exact label depends on your operating system and file manager. Adobe notes that these desktop views may show only basic information, so a missing PDF creation date in Acrobat will not always be visible here.
The dates shown are the file’s own timestamps. On Windows, a filesystem creation date may be displayed. Linux does not store a creation time in the same way, so the field may be absent or labelled differently. Treat these values as evidence about the file’s life on your disk, not about when the document was written.
ExifTool for detailed inspection
ExifTool is a free command-line metadata utility. Its PDF tag reference identifies the embedded PDF Info fields CreationDate and ModDate, which it reports as CreateDate and ModifyDate. It also exposes the corresponding XMP values, so you can see more than one metadata view of the same file. This route suits readers who are comfortable with a terminal or who need to check many files at once. It requires installing the utility separately, and reading conflicting values still requires care.

What each date actually represents
Three kinds of date are often mixed together, and separating them is the main source of confusion.
- PDF Info dates.
CreationDateandModDateare standard fields in the PDF’s information dictionary. They are what Acrobat’s Description tab usually displays. - XMP dates. XMP is another metadata representation that PDFs can carry. A file may hold matching values in both the information dictionary and XMP, or the two may disagree. Tools can expose either view.
- Filesystem dates. These belong to the operating system and the file’s location. They change when a file is copied, downloaded, synchronised, or re-saved, so they often reflect the last time the file was handled rather than when the content was first written.
When you report a date, name the field you inspected, for example “the PDF Info CreationDate shown in Acrobat’s Description tab.” Avoid calling any single value the definitive creation date.
Comparing the three methods
| Method | Best for | What to check | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acrobat Properties (File > Properties > Description) | Readers who want a graphical view of embedded metadata | Embedded creation date and time; modification date if listed | The field can be blank or edited by the author, as covered below. |
| Operating-system file details (Properties or Get Info) | A quick check without opening a PDF application | Filesystem created and modified dates | These are file-system dates, not the document’s embedded dates. Labels and available fields vary by operating system; Linux may show no creation time. |
| ExifTool | Advanced or batch inspection | PDF CreationDate and ModDate, plus the matching XMP values |
Requires installing a separate utility. Conflicting values still need interpretation. |
When the dates are blank, odd, or conflicting
A blank creation date does not prove that a PDF is new, invalid, or tampered with. Adobe’s guidance on the subject is direct: “If you can’t find the creation date and time, or if the field is blank, there’s a chance the author took time to remove PDF metadata from the document.” The same guidance adds that “if a PDF’s creation date seems off, keep in mind that authors can edit metadata and choose any date they want.”

- Save money by using PDF Fusion to view over 100 file formats without having to purchase additional software
- Merge incompatible files quickly and easily by dragging and dropping in PDF Fusion to create a new PDF documents
- Save time with PDF Fusion's editing tools to reuse the content from existing documents without starting from scratch
Because of that, a populated date is a claim the file makes about itself, not independent proof of when the content was written. If the date matters, for a dispute, an archive, or a citation, the practical steps are:
- Record the field name, the value exactly as displayed, and the tool you used.
- Compare the Acrobat reading with the XMP view or with ExifTool output, and note any mismatch.
- Check the filesystem dates separately and label them as such.
- Ask the document’s publisher or author for the original date when the metadata is missing or questionable. Adobe recommends the same step.
Do not present the embedded date as forensic evidence unless you have corroboration from a source outside the file.
Timezones and display formats
The date format and timezone shown depend on the tool and the platform. The sources available for this guide establish where the creation and modification fields are stored and that they can be edited, but they do not provide a universal guide to decoding every timezone encoding inside a PDF date string. Report the value as your tool displays it, and avoid converting it to another timezone unless the tool states the offset clearly.

Which method to start with
For most readers, Acrobat’s Description tab is the reliable first check, and it does not require a paid product if you already have another way to open the file and read its properties. Start with the operating system if you only need a rough idea of when the file reached your computer. Move to ExifTool when you need the XMP view or are checking a batch of files.
Adobe Acrobat documents the graphical route described above and is a reasonable choice if you already use it. A basic check does not require buying it.
Adobe’s Acrobat documentation, updated 5 November 2025, covers document properties and the creation and modification fields. The ExifTool PDF tag reference lists the PDF Info and XMP tags used in this guide.
