Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Turning on memory compression in Windows 11 does not produce a visible speed boost. It lets Windows keep some memory pages in RAM in a compressed form, which can defer moving them to the paging file on disk. The cost is extra CPU work to compress and decompress that memory. Microsoft’s published material, as of October 2026, does not establish a universal compression ratio, the thresholds Windows uses to start compressing, or a verified step-by-step procedure for toggling the feature in every Windows 11 build. So the real effect depends on your hardware and workload, and it is better judged by how the system behaves than by a single memory number.
What compression does to a memory page
Windows manages memory in pages and can move them between physical RAM and the paging file. Memory compression adds a middle option. Instead of writing a page out to disk, Windows can keep it in physical memory in a smaller representation. Microsoft-authored Windows memory notes describe this compressed-memory mechanism and a separate “Memory Compression” accounting category, which is why you may see that label in memory tools.
The important point is that compressed memory still occupies RAM. It is not free memory, and it is not the same as memory that has been paged out. The compressed pages are simply stored more compactly, so a large compressed figure means Windows is holding content in RAM that it could otherwise have moved to disk. Whether that is helpful depends on how much the system is under pressure.
Compression versus paging: the trade-off
Compression and paging are two different answers to the same problem of limited physical memory. Both are part of normal memory management, and Windows chooses between them based on conditions Microsoft’s public material does not fully spell out for current Windows 11 builds.

| Aspect | Compressed in RAM | Paged to the paging file |
|---|---|---|
| Where the content lives | Physical memory, in compressed form | Paging file on storage |
| Main cost | CPU time to compress and decompress | Storage I/O when the content is read back |
| Still uses RAM | Yes, in reduced form | No, for the paged-out content |
| Published compression ratio | Not stated in the Microsoft material reviewed; no universal ratio exists in those sources | Not applicable |
| Trigger thresholds for current Windows 11 builds | Not stated in the Microsoft material reviewed | General paging model documented by Microsoft; current Windows 11 thresholds not stated |
| Performance effect | Depends on CPU headroom and workload; no published benchmark for Windows 11 | Depends on storage speed and how often pages are needed again |
In practical terms, compression can help when keeping content in RAM avoids slow disk reads, and it can hurt when the CPU is already busy or the compressed content is needed again often. Microsoft’s material does not publish a universal winner for every system, so a faster result on one PC is not a promise for another.
Does it make your PC faster or slower?
No general answer is established. The honest summary is that compression exchanges CPU work for a smaller footprint in RAM, and paging exchanges storage activity for freed memory. Neither is a guaranteed speedup. The sources reviewed include no current Windows 11 benchmark results for compression, so any claim of a specific percentage gain should be treated as unsupported.

If your PC feels sluggish, the most useful question is whether the slowdown appears under a particular workload and whether memory is actually under sustained pressure. A compressed-memory figure on its own does not answer that.
Should you change the setting?
For most readers, the safer position is to leave memory management alone and investigate only when there is a concrete symptom. The sources reviewed do not establish a benefit that justifies a general change, and they do not provide a verified current procedure for toggling compression. Disabling it is best treated as a diagnostic step, used only after you have confirmed the exact procedure for your build in current Microsoft documentation.

Reading memory numbers without mixing them up
Much of the confusion around memory compression comes from reading different memory figures as if they measured the same thing. Each one answers a different question.
Working set
A process’s working set is the memory physically mapped to that process at a given moment. It changes as Windows moves pages in and out of RAM, so it describes current physical presence, not total memory the program has been granted.

Commit
Commit is memory the operating system has committed to a process. It can be backed by RAM or by the paging file. Because of this, a process’s working set is not a complete measure of its memory commitment. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance warns against relying only on the default memory column when investigating high memory use, and recommends checking Commit size.
Compressed memory and system-wide use
The Memory Compression category describes content held in compressed form in RAM. A large value there is not, by itself, evidence of a leak. It shows that Windows is choosing to keep some content in RAM rather than on disk. System-wide physical-memory use, which shows how RAM is divided among categories, is a different view again.

Task Manager caveats
Task Manager is the built-in tool most people use first. Microsoft’s performance-counter reference includes mappings to older Task Manager versions, so it should not be used to claim exact equivalence between a legacy field and a field in the current Windows 11 display. Read what your own Task Manager column is labeled and what it measures in your build.

Use this sequence before drawing any conclusion from a compressed-memory figure:
- Reproduce the symptom under a specific workload, such as opening the same application set or running the same task, rather than inferring a fault from one number.
- Compare overall physical-memory use with the per-process figures. Do not assume the default process memory column explains all system memory.
- Check Commit size for the processes you suspect. Commit shows what each process has been granted, which the working set does not.
- If a process’s commitment grows steadily over time, or Windows reports resource exhaustion, use allocation-analysis tools. Microsoft recommends VMMap for per-process memory breakdowns and the Windows Performance Toolkit for investigating allocation behavior.
- For a system-wide snapshot of how RAM is being used, Microsoft Sysinternals RAMMap shows usage categories. It is an advanced diagnostic utility, not a tool you need in order to use Windows normally, and a snapshot does not prove that compression is causing a slowdown.
Ignore forum or third-party tutorials that offer a single command as the universal way to change compression. Some Microsoft Community discussions describe user experiences, but those are anecdotes and do not establish how the feature behaves in a given build.
Verifying the procedure for your Windows 11 build
Microsoft’s material reviewed for this article does not confirm a current Settings path, a PowerShell command, the privilege level it requires, or whether a restart is needed for every supported Windows 11 build. Before making any change, check Microsoft Learn or Microsoft Support for your exact build, and confirm the result on a test session before relying on it. Keep in mind that the Windows Memory Cheat Sheet is a Microsoft-authored reference hosted as a GitHub wiki. It is useful background, but it is not a substitute for current product documentation.
