1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWindows is usually not going backward when a driver shows an old date. The date is a label the driver’s provider writes into the package, and Windows chooses a driver using targeting information inside those files. An old-looking date by itself does not prove Windows picked the wrong driver. The real question is whether the device is malfunctioning, and that determines what you should do next.
Why the driver date looks old
Microsoft’s support article “Understanding driver updates,” published 20 October 2025, states: “The driver date is descriptive info set by the driver provider and can be any date they choose.” In other words, the date is metadata chosen by the company that built the package. A manufacturer can ship a newer, more capable driver with an older date, or ship a stable release months after a build that was dated later. Reading the date as a version history gives misleading results.
How Windows chooses a driver
According to the same Microsoft article, Windows Update uses targeting information inside the driver files to determine which driver fits a given device. That targeting data includes hardware identifiers that the package claims to support. Windows is therefore matching a device to a compatible package, not sorting drivers by date and installing the newest one. A driver with an older date can be the one Windows judges to be the correct match for your hardware and Windows release.
This also explains why Windows can reinstall a driver after you have manually installed a different one. If the package offered through Windows Update matches your device better, or you have not blocked automatic driver updates, Windows may replace the driver you chose.

- Games and applications bogged down by outdated drivers run smoothly again and start faster.
- Unstable drivers are replaced with verified versions, significantly increasing system stability.
- Ensures that printers, headsets, and other peripherals function flawlessly.
- Saves you hours of searching for and installing the correct drivers.
- Offers a driver backup function, allowing for easy rollback to the previous state if problems arise.
Why provider names and version numbers look inconsistent
Windows Update displays the driver provider and a version string, but providers do not share a naming or numbering standard. One vendor may use a build-style number, another a date-based string, and a third a simple release counter. Two drivers that look like versions of the same thing may be unrelated in purpose.
Several drivers can also appear for one device. Hardware designs often split functions across separate drivers, for example a core driver plus a companion component for audio, sensors, or power management. Seeing more than one related entry is normal in these cases and does not by itself indicate a conflict.

Decide whether you have a real problem
Before changing anything, sort your situation into one of the cases below. Most “old driver” complaints fall into the first row, where no action is needed.
| Situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The date or version looks old, but the device works normally | The date is provider metadata; Windows matched the package to the device | No change needed. Leave the driver as installed. |
| A device stopped working or became unstable after a driver update | The new package may not suit your hardware or Windows release | Roll back the driver first (see the rollback steps below). |
| Windows keeps replacing a driver you installed manually | Windows Update offers a package it considers a better match, or automatic driver updates are active | Check the device’s official support page for the package you need, then review update options before reinstalling. |
| Windows reports that a driver is blocked | A policy is preventing a driver that is not on Microsoft’s approved list from loading | Look for a WHCP-certified release from the publisher. Do not disable the driver policy. |
Fixes, in order
Work through these steps in sequence. Stop when the device works correctly.

- Please remember that this DVD does not come with a KEY CODE. You will need to obtain a Windows Key Code in order to use the reinstall option
- Record the details. Note your Windows version, the exact device name, and the driver provider, version, and date shown in Device Manager. If several similar devices are listed, identify the one with the symptom before you act, because the same name can appear for more than one component.
- Roll back if a recent update caused the problem. Open Device Manager, expand the relevant category, right-click the device, and choose Properties. On the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver and follow the prompts. Restart if prompted.
- Install a manual driver only from the official source. If rollback is unavailable or the problem remains, find your exact device model on the PC or hardware maker’s official support site. Download only a package that matches your device and your Windows version and architecture (for example, 64-bit). Then in Device Manager, select Update driver, choose Browse my computer for drivers, and point it to the extracted package.
- Handle blocked drivers through the update channel. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and check Driver updates. If the blocked driver is a kernel-mode driver, ask the publisher for a release certified through Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP).
- Remove a Windows update only as a last resort. If you suspect a specific update caused the fault, go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ says removal is not recommended unless necessary and that not every update can be removed. Removing an update does not identify or fix the specific driver, so treat it as a fallback.
What to avoid
- Disabling the driver policy. Microsoft warns that turning off the Windows driver policy reduces device security. It is not a routine answer to a date or version concern.
- Downloading drivers from unofficial sites. Microsoft advises against this. Use the device or PC maker’s support page instead.
- Using a generic driver updater in place of checking the device. Such tools do not replace confirming the exact device model and the manufacturer’s package for your Windows version.
What the available evidence does and does not establish
Microsoft’s main explanation of driver dates and provider naming is written for Windows 11 24H2, Windows 11 25H2, and Windows Server 2025, as stated in the October 2025 article. The Device Manager instructions also apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the Roll Back Driver option depends on a usable previous driver being recorded for the device, and it requires administrator permission. If it is missing, the device has no prior driver to restore, and you will need the manufacturer’s package instead.
No published statistic was found that shows how often Windows replaces drivers or how often old-dated drivers cause faults, so this article does not offer a prevalence figure. The explanation above rests on Microsoft’s description of how driver dates and targeting work. Whether a specific driver is correct for your machine can only be confirmed by checking your device model, your Windows version, and the manufacturer’s current package for them.
